You know what's sad about their punishment? The fact of the matter is that 750,000 dollars isn't a lot of money to anyone in the NFL. Teams make in the high millions of dollars each year, and Bill Belichek (sorry about the spelling) makes enough to pay that out of his pocket money. The Patriots organization is lucky for this "punishment" because it should have been much worse. They were caught CHEATING. Now, I'm not saying they're the only team who does this, I'm saying that the were dumb enough to get caught. Their loss, sorry.
The problem with the draft pick punishment is this. The New England Patriots are so deep right now, that losing only 1 draft pick, as it's going to be one of the last of the first round anyways, isn't going to matter enough. They're going to be Super Bowl contenders next year even without a draft pick in the first round. They proved this off-season, with signings of Adalius Thomas and Randy Moss that they can go out and make a splash with big name players. With those moves in the off-season next year, or moves close to that big, they are going to dominate year in and year out. The punishment is just not strong enough.
If the commissoner wanted to set an example, as he should have, then he needed to do it even more so. Make it more extreme, to the point that NO ONE will even try it again. I know that seems like high expectations, but if you make a team forfeit a game, or if you force starters to sit out a game, or if you force a coach to miss a game, teams are going to think twice, and that's all you can do.
The Patriots got off easy. Goodall did not do his job well enough here, because this problem is not going to stop. I think next time I play football I'll bring my camera, just in case.

While I agree with you that the pats got off easy, I don't think suspending a coach or players is really punishment at all. You suspend a coach, but the system's still there, you know what I mean?  The assistant coach is still there, the offensive and defensive coordinators are still there, the QB coach is still there, the DB coach is still there, the line coaches...  What difference does it really make if the head coach is there or not?  Besides, losing one game, as opposed to having a long-lasting effect, like losing a draft pick, I think has more, serious consequences.

Belichik's a filthy cheater.  He shouldn't be allowed to coach.  Ever.  This was the second time he was caught, which means that he was probably doing it every game, too.  All the more shameful because it was only week 1.

While I agree that Belichik needs to stop cheating, I do stand by the fact that he's not the only one who has been cheating. As for him not being allowed to coach ever again, how do you feel about players who use steroids? Shawn Merrimam, Tim Couch (bad example), Rodney Harrison in football. Too many players to name in baseball. Basketball has people who get suspended for fighting, shootings, etc.Should all of these people be banned from their sports like Pete Rose for gambling? I dont' think they should be banned. I don't believe the Patriots punishment was not strong enough, but my reasons are more because of how good they are right now. If this was the Cardinals, or the Lions, or a rebuilding team, then losing a draft pick would be major. The Patriots could care less, guaranteed because of one reason. 3 super bowls in 5 years.
