Last night, Natalie and I were having a nice romantic conversation together. And at one point, she told me that she was going to quote the movie Jerry Macguire. She told me, "you had me at hello..." That was really sweet and it made me smile. And since we were on a Jerry Macguire theme, I tell her, "show me the money!" She was really disappointed in me. She said that my first thought should have been, "you complete me..." Not "show me the money!"

Oops. Really? I just thought we were quoting the movie. But in retrospect, that would have been the much more romantic thing for me to say. I guess I missed the boat on that one. In fact, I'm just all around horrible when it comes to picking out the right movie quotes to use in a romantic situation. And I'm sure that most of you are wondering, "why the hell are they quoting movies in romantic situations to begin with?" and that's a good question. Probably because we're both dorks. But since we both like doing this, I guess it's okay. It's kind of a game we play.

But my last foray into quoting a movie led me to tell Natalie, "Luke I am your father..." during the whole glow in the dark condom adventure. See? I suck at this. But there aren't a whole lot of romantic quotes in the Star Wars trilogy. I had nothing to work with there. And in my defense, she's not always good at this game we have either.

One time, I quoted a Buffy episode by telling her, "I'm love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it." And she followed that with, "you're not even loser Spike. You're a shell of a loser." Ouch. I mean, I was pretending to be Spike and declare my love for her, and she calls me a shell of a loser? She lost points with that one herself.

I told her she could have quoted something better, like the finale episode where Buffy said, "I love you, Spike." But she said that wasn't really an interesting quote, even if it was nice. So I asked her why she didn't use the quote when Buffy said she wanted to ride Spike at a gallop until his eyes popped out of his head. That's a good quote too. But alas, I was called a shell of a loser instead.

I have no idea why I'm even writing this actually. Except I'm just a little bored at the moment, and it seemed like something to say. Does anybody else quote movies and TV shows like this? Is it just us? It could be our secret little game that no one else in the world does. That's kind of cool actually if that's the case.

It seems to me I quoted "Netherfield Hall is let at last" to Wife just a day or so ago, but I can't remember why.

Me and my ex still do this. In everyday conversations something will trigger and she or I will quote something. She will do the next line, and so on. We don't do the lovey dovery quotes because, well, we are divorced. Just friends, but really good friends.

I love quoting movie lines and do it whenever something triggers one. Which is a lot with me.

At work I was talking to a customer and when I turned around to tell another customer I'd be right there, the origianl customer walked away. I kept talking about our subject of MP3 players as I was bending down and opening the case. When I looked up it was an entirely different person. Wondering what the hell I was talking about since tehy were looking at headphones. Without a beat I stood, put my hands on their shoulders and said, "I wish we had known one antoehr this is a little awkward." From Tommy Boy. They didn't get it, but two other people did and they burst out laughing.

If I'm in a really odd mood I'll do characters, voices and all. SOme people just stare. Others laugh.

Either way, it is fun for me.

I've had my ex quote Ricky Ricardo with "Lucy, you got 'splaining to do!" to which I would reply with a very Lucy-like "Wah!".  So no, it's not new, but really dude, you need to bone up on your romantic quotes.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 11, 2007....
um...i do it all the time but with friends, too. and nat's right: she was going for romantic: context is king in rapid-fire quotations.

for example: if i say to my buddy, "you got him?" and he comes back with, "yeah, i got him", i know he's quoting from the untouchables and then we can go on to other quotes from that film, or other films involving sean connery, andy garcia or kevin costner. :>

to say nothing of quotations from douglas adams, monty python, star wars or star trek...

exhibitc--So I guess you do it too, huh?

vicarious--That is exactly how I am too! I am always thinking of quotes that fit every situation. My only problem is picking the wrong one when my fiancee is expecting something more romantic. But it's fun for me too!

uniquely--I totally do need to study some romantic quotes. I tend to remember the funny stuff before the romantic stuff though. That's my problem most of the time!

silver--I can be good at this! It's just sometimes I'm at a loss for the romantic quotes. I need to watch more chick flicks or something....

LOL, yes you dropped the ball on the quote game last night! But you are forgiven. It was actually pretty funny!

I am the one who was guilty of saying 'ditto' when you first told me how you felt about me.........LOL! And then you accused me of watching Ghost too many times!

But that was when the game started :) Now we do it all the time! It's fun!

it is an axiom that if you are over 30 and involved in computers at any level, you must be able to quote at least 3 lines from monty python's holy grail.

    'it's just a flesh wound'

'one, two, five! three sir! three!'

'we are the knights who say nee!'
  • evil_twin said on Sep 11, 2007....
cutie--I'm glad I'm forgiven! Next time, I'll do better! Promise! And you're right. You started this with your 'ditto' comment, and I was really excited that you liked to quote movies just as much as me! Perfect together, I tell ya! :-D

trav--You know what? I've never seen that movie before! But I'm not over 30, so I guess I'm forgiven maybe? :-P

My ex and I used to have entire conversations in movie quotes.  Most of our friends couldn't keep up.

Nowadays, I'm out of the pop-culture loop after all the baby-having.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Sep 11, 2007....
Oh, yeahhhh, MP quotes abound in this household! (in my entire family on my dad's side as well, and all through my college buddy circle)

    "Blue...no...yel--aughhhh!"

"I fart in your general direction!"

"You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you..."

I've also been known to quote Princess Bride often.

I do this with my kids and occasionally with my husband, but for the life of me...I can't remember any at the moment. They just seem to pop into my head in the moment of conversation. I also quote parts of songs or the bible sometimes.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 12, 2007....
i've got a theory* that as the ancients used myths and legends, so do we use pop culture, to comprise a common, shared vocabulary that transcends mere words.

*and yes, it actually could be demons... :p
  • Mamie said on Sep 12, 2007....
yea we do this...with commercials too. Our latest one (which only WE may "get" ) is my husband had a red line where his work shirt collar was...and I said "oh, no, ligature marks"...I know it is not funny here...but for CSI freaks, it makes total sense!
  • evil_twin said on Sep 12, 2007....
pickers--Ah, yes, a bit too much info! :-P Dress up games are fun too though...

eilan--I'm sure some day you guys will get caught up on pop culture so you can play along again!

infernal--Now, Princess Bride I have seen! That's a good movie.

queen--Maybe I'll have to read up on romantic quotes?

    sudden--I do songs sometimes too!

silver--Is it a dancing demon? No, something isn't right there...

mamie--Fellow CSI freak! See, I would get that! That's funny :-)

e_t , I love such stuff and its good to know that I'm not the only one.... you know the silly romantic kind!

But I'm not lucky like you, I have to play alone in my head... :p
R is not into all these... but it doesnt stop him from teasing me though! So we generally end up playing a different game~ kickboxing!

  • travelr712 said on Sep 12, 2007....

kyle - being under 30, i'm guessing your 'generational movie' is 'office space', right? at least that's what all the 'kids' around my area quote. and yes, you're forgiven.

"I'm here to chew bubblegum, and kick a$$!"  -Rowdy Roddy Piper in John Carpenter's "They Live".

I've been known to say, "As you wish" a lot, too.

desert--I do this alone in my head too! Sometimes I make myself laugh with quotes I'm thinking of, and then I feel like a total dork.

trav--Office Space is a great movie! "give me back my stapler!" And that bit about the pieces of flair? I love that movie.

waking--It's fun to do that, isn't it?

Grape--My favorite Princess Leia quote has to be when she calls Han Solo a "scruffy looking nerf herder" That cracks me up every time, and I've been known to call people that when they make me mad.

    CW--It is fun!

    exhibitc--I don't know that one...

silver--Princess Bride is a good one. I love that whole "you killed my father, prepare to die" speech. By the way, I've had the song "I've got a theory" stuck in my head all day!
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 12, 2007....

Well I am extremely bad at this. I went to an all girl school... so we had a lot of time on our hands. People would always quote movies, songs, and T.V. shows.... and what was I stuck with... a blank mind and nothing to say... DAMN! I always felt left out... so one day I tried o just memorize all these quotes from napoleon dynamite.... (That was popular when I was in school)... but when I got to school the next day I forgot everything... So basically I remember nothing and cannot quote a DARN thing....

  • evil_twin said on Sep 15, 2007....
MyLoveDDW--Napoleon Dynamite is another great movie to quote! Maybe you should take notes and keep the quotes in your pocket? Then you can whip it out at the right moment! :-P
  • MyLoveDDW said on Sep 15, 2007....
I really should. I just don't when to "whip" them out... I wish you could see it... I seriously am HORRIBLE!!! I need more practice.
  • evil_twin said on Sep 15, 2007....
MyLove--Well, if you ever need to apply Chapstick, make sure you say, "my lips hurt real bad!" and if you see someone drinking milk say to them, "I notice you're drinking 1%...is that because you think you're fat?" :-D
  • MyLoveDDW said on Sep 16, 2007....
