Frankly, I am just really very curious about this. Most people say they don't blog for money but I think one should be honest enough to look in the mirror sometimes.

How do you fund your Internet connection? How much have you made from Adsense? Over how many months? I recall Secretlife saying she made $3 or so in about six months from all sources or so!

From Soulcast Adsense, I've made just $1.57 or less than 10% of my total Google Adsense earnings in nearly a year of full blown typing almost daily.

Yet, I keep blogging! Amazing, isn't it? Am I crazy or something? ;-)

Now, what about you? I want some numbers......

    What is Ad sense?

And no I don't get paid for my labor of love. I agree with Secret they are a bunch of cheats.

  • SoulCast said on Sep 11, 2007....
Who are a bunch of cheats?

We show users ads 50% of the time and ours the other 50%. We didn't know how it would work out when we started the site, but we've lived up to our word about sharing the adsense revenue 50/50 with users.
  • kruuyai said on Sep 11, 2007....
So, soulcast, have you guys ever gotten a check from Adsense?  I think what we're all trying to figure out here is if Adsense is legitimate or if they just drop everyone that gets close to making a check.  Maybe they just drop the small generators.  Seems kind of petty, though.
  • GrapeKoolaid said on Sep 11, 2007....
Nowhere near getting a check from google yet.....
  • SoulCast said on Sep 11, 2007....
Google is a legitimate company and I do not believe they would try to rip off people. The problem is that people try to click their own ads or get others too do the same. People that have been on soulcast for a while will remember that in the early days there were posts on the homepage every week asking for people to click each others ads. This will get your account revoked and unfortunately sometimes innocent people will get their account revoked by mistake. We tried to warn people against clicking each others ads :/

And, yes, we've gotten checks from google. Over the years we've gotten many checks from them for other sites that we run. Thousands of people across the world get paid large sums of money from google adsense.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 11, 2007....
HH, if you don't know what adsense is, then how in the world can you possibly claim that they're cheats?

kruuyai: hello there....yes, that would be kind of tacky, dropping people who don't meet up with marketing expectations.

However, somehow, I do not believe that Google would toe that line - they are desperate for more pages to display their ads - at least, as of last year, unless someone seriously or 'majorly' flouted the rules of the Adsense program.

  • Bronx said on Sep 11, 2007....
    SC: well...that's very nice.

Yes, Google can tell easily who is doing what and when.

The problem, IMHO, is how Google views this revenue sharing thing - if I recall correctly, it is not listed in the Adsense ToS that revenue sharing is allowed.

Can we know these other sites run by SC, or is it Jelsoft? I'm sure that we'd all love to participate there, too - and one day have a group barbecue with pictures and video to prove it. I certainly would.  ;0)

i was dropped by google adsense.  at least that's who sent me the email.

i never clicked my own ads.  never knew anyone to ask to click my ads.

i believe the reason i was dropped  was for sexual content

they did send me an email telling me my adsense account had been closed.

i think i was pretty close to having a check.

I was trying to recall just when i got that email-  it had to be before christmas last year.

more power to anyone from soulcast that can make money-

it's just i've never heard of a single soul who has gotten a check.

SL: I think I understand now - yes, Google has been known to delete many blogs at Blogger for 'that thing, that thing, that thing'.......

Which is worse - allowing unmitigated sexual content or misinforming users about Adsense ToS?

So sorry it had to happen to you - strange though that only the blogger suffers these indignities. But I respect Google for their courtesy in, at least, intimating you.

However, I am surprised that they never gave you anything - I think the Adsense ToS says something about paying your balance to you after 3 months or so, less any indebtedness via Adwords or something like that.

Yes, more or less, the main question centers around who has spent any money from Adsense.

If you're right, then only SC has received a check so far. I'm  so envious just now....

  • Bronx said on Sep 11, 2007....
Soulcast: oh....I didn't know that. But, just a suggestion: why allow sexual content on the site when Adsense ToS forbids it?

Does the sexual content attract a special breed of people? Is that the intention?

There are so many porn and flagged sites on the web, I'm sure you'll agree; so, why allow it on a non-X-rated website with Adsense monetization?

I mean, does 'adult' now mean 'x-rated' or 'mature'? Believe me, there are enough real professionals out there making a living from x-rated literature - nobody on SC probably comes close, IMHO.

I have tested that sexual-content genre thing and found it debases rather than uplifts - except outside the spiritual or philosophical realm. I am just lucky to have enough excitement in my love life, I guess....;-)

BTW, SC, why is it that the new newsletters can be e-mailed to SC users but the users' blog posts cannot be e-mailed to them?

Is it a technical limitation or just SC preference? Just curious.....

bronx, since each soulcaster who wants to participate in adsense is supposed to read the TOS, i fail to see why this is soulcast's problem. and you do me and other soulcasters a grave disservice when you say that sexual content degrades.

  • Bronx said on Sep 12, 2007....
SW: I think I said 'debases', which, IMHO, implies not aspiring to more than momentary sensual pleasures.

Everyone gets horny at least once in a lifetime but, if we stay or remain that way, we would only get nothing else done. No offense meant.

Sorry about the misunderstanding - I never said 'degrade' because that would imply degenerate behavior.

My point about the Adsense ToS was simply that SC should not have tied it somehow to registering for a blog here - at least, that's what I observed last year.

  • silverwhisper said on Sep 12, 2007....
you are generalizing about all sexual content. and frankly, i find that ignorant.

bronx, how in the hell is someone supposed to make use of google adsense on SC without registering here? you aren't making any sense. soulcast is a business partner of google. that is the extent of the relationship AFAICT. so if there's a way to utilize adsense on SC without having a blog entry here, i'd be awfully curious to learn how precisely one would go about that.

    ed
  • Bronx said on Sep 12, 2007....
I'm not and I certainly am not doing that; but, are you saying that anyone who generalizes about all sexual content is ignorant?

Somehow, I expected you to be more charitable than that. Anyway, I'm closing that chapter, on my part - it's a bit pointless to take a few words personally after a certain stage in life.

My simple point about registering for Adsense actually relates to SL's and SC's experiences with Google - anyone registering for Adsense should have realized that posting sexual content regularly would eventually lead to flouting the Adsense ToS.

The main point is that those registering should have been warned first, even if they would read the ToS later on, since SC provided the original link.

It's really no big deal, SW - just a line such as this: we allow sexual content in posts but those wishing to register for Adsense should please note that Adsense ToS.
    forbids it.

  • SoulCast said on Sep 12, 2007....
first, we aren't a business partner with google. We are adsense users just like you guys, and we don't get any special access or recourse with google.

    @bronx
I think you are asking the wrong question. The better questions is, why restrict sexual content? Soulcast is a site for people to talk about the issues that interest them, and if that's sex, that's perfectly ok with us.

Currently posts with the 'adult' tag do not show ads from google so there is no longer a problem with sexual content and ad sense. We fixed this as soon as it became a problem.
  • Bronx said on Sep 12, 2007....
Thanks, Soulcast - point well made and taken. :o>
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 12, 2007....
    bronx queried:
are you saying that anyone who generalizes about all sexual content is ignorant?

you're right, you did say debase...which isn't meaningfully different. and yes, i'm saying that anybody who generalizes about sexual content and dismisses it that way is indeed ignorant. if i said the same to hunter of all people, don't think for a second i wouldn't say it to anybody else.

  • Trinov said on Sep 27, 2007....
Hi, never signed up. I noticed that the ads on my blog are usually not at all relevant to what I write about. Or they may be relevant only to a computer's logic. For example, ads about hotels in Tiberias are not really going to get any clicks by most people reading my blogs. Ads for such hotels might get clicks on a yuppie Jewish website with a vacation page. Ads in Hebrew for sexy pictures are also, hopefully, not going to get any traffic from my blog page, but they were among the first ads that were there consistently. Ads in German also are not likely to get any clicks so I really wonder about the programs which run the ads. There was a line in an Agatha Christis story: "that the Dutchess looked as if she had stood in the middle of the room and let her maid throw brooches at her'. Most websites get ads using the same randomness as the Dutchess's maid. No way to make money.
  • Bronx said on Sep 27, 2007....
    Trinov: hi...WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

You're quite right about the odd ads that often come up via Adsense. It can be baffling sometimes.

Since you never signed up, any revenue from clicks on those ads goes straight to Soulcast's Adsense account - so, there is no real push for Google to match your content with the ads presented.

You love Agatha Christie, too? We have something in common already - read so many of them as a teenager that only the movie versions can revive the plot details in me these days..

  • Trinov said on Sep 27, 2007....
Thank you for your welcome. ...Yes, I think that I read all of Agatha Christi, including anything that I could get my hands on that she wrote under other names. She wrote one wonderfully wierd book about the intervention of a Court Angel or punishment Angel called The Harlequin. A Mr Saithewaite (spelling not accurate) was the witness to the Angel's righting of old wrongs. And one of the stories was about a reincarnation of someone who had been in Atlantis, another about the freeing of a little boy's ghost. Most people would not relate this type of short story with Agatha Christi.... She also wrote lots of stories about post WWI life in England which were very interesting from an historical point of view......As to her plots, they were always fair to the reader since all the hints were there, she never cheated. I'd always re-read the story at least once to find all the hints, but even so, after a few years I'd forget and could re-read with the same enthusiasm. And she never made her characters so real that you regretted them being murdered for your entertainment. It was all a fun puzzle...I tried about three times to write murder mysteries and did not get very far, even writing them by going about the plot backwards does not guarantee that every point is covered. I'm happier reading than writing them--but I haven't found anything worth bothering with for twenty years with one of two exceptions.
  • Bronx said on Sep 28, 2007....
Trinov: thanks - I never realized she wrote under pseudonyms elsewhere. Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple were my favorites, in that order.

Her plots were really very interesting. A formula that may work for most mystery writers is to get a good story first and then add the hidden truths and hints.

It certainly works for Hollywood movies, even though sometimes these stories are actually multi-stories woven together and embellished a bit.
