a recent comment in a blog entry by e_t got me thinking about the kind of language we all employ here on SC.

granted, users on SC are supposed to be 13 and older, but what kind of language do you prefer? no expletives/cursing, mild expletives/cursing, let it all hang out, something else?

me personally, i'm OK w/ mild expletives/cursing and on rare occasions i'll go full bore as it were but use it infrequently out of deference to the sensibilities of others who may be reading.

what about you?

mild cursing I can put up with.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Sep 10, 2007....
If I'm in a pretty bad mood, I can swear up a storm, but I generally try to keep it to a minimum in my posts. I'd like to think that I can say even angry things largely without resorting to a limited set of relatively ugly words and phrases.

I don't have a problem with it in comments to my blog or on other blogs as long as it's not cursing for the sake of cursing, you know? I mean, "That's a damned shame" communicates pretty clearly, while a comment/blog with MFer this and that just starts to lose all coherence after a while (imo).

I have the vocabulary capability of a crusty sailor, but usually I try to keep it clean.  I am not easily offended by cuss words, but anything that could cross the line to derogatory or racial slur is absolutely out of bounds.

My own theory is that the really "good" cuss words should be saved for special occaisions.  Using "clean" words to convey your displeasure is much more creative and a clear sign of intelligence.
  • tizzygirl said on Sep 10, 2007....
I have to admit that I can be really bad at times....I get comments like "I can't believe such big words coming fron such a small girl.." in real life.  When I am paying attention on here I can keep it clean....and for the most part I don't swear up a storm...but...when I get mad...it's like every other word...and I don't even notice!!  So I don't have a preference because I am guilty of it myself :)
  • evil_twin said on Sep 10, 2007....
I cuss a lot in real life, and I used to do it a bit more at my blogs. But then I tried to tone it down. But sometimes I just say whatever want anyway. That's just how I talk. I do try to keep it down to a minimum and not make it be every other word. That's just excessive. But for extra emphasis sometimes, I'll use bad words. It's hard for me to write differently than I speak.
But when I'm commenting, I pay attention to what I say more. If the post I'm commenting is filled with dirty words, I might respond with my own expletives, if necessary. But if the poster doesn't swear, I'm not gonna swear at their blog. It's only polite.

I don't believe I've ever cursed on any of my posts but have said hell or damn on other people's posts a couple times.

I'm only offended when it is used deliberately in attack on anyone.

Some cursing is funny and effective in a good way, but enough is enough. You know what I mean?

As I often say, there is no forte with piano. The only point of strong language is to be different from mild language.

The words are building blocks, each one unimportant in itself.
  • Alyss said on Sep 10, 2007....
I rarely use expletives or extreme language, it just wasn't acceptable in my mum's house so I tend not to. Minor words tend to escape but not the f bomb.

But if I do swear then it tends to be over something serious.

I like to swear, it is fun. I use it emphasize my fun, rarely anger.

As far as words people note me with, it doesn't bother me.

As the content and perhaps the emotion call for it, I use it. Otherwise, it's extraneous and used just to get an unnecessary rise out of people. If I'm talking about a sexual event in a non-erotica format, then I tend to be more conservative. If I'm actually writing erotica (which I do outside of SoulCast), I write to titillate.

    Interesting topic!

I swear in my blogs about like I do in real life.  Maybe a little less since written language, however informal, is still more formal than speech.  In my mind, there are first-string and second-string swear words.  The second-string, mild stuff, is the stuff I use most of the time.  I try to save swearing for when the emphasis/humor (because sometimes swearing IS funny!) is really needed, or when it just wouldn't sound right to say it any other way.  Or when I drop something or stub my toe.  The first-string stuff I only use when I am really steamed and mostly only in my head :p  Then there are some words I just don't use, ever.

I confess I was raised as a good Christian girl, and a preacher's kid to boot, so I still sometimes flinch out of instinct when I read/hear certain words.  If you've seen the movie "Saved!" and you remember the scene where she's losing her faith, and she stands in front of a church and yells random swear words really hesitantly...I totally identify with that!

But I don't mind people who swear in their blogs, or who swear on my blog, so long as it's tastefu - if it enhances the writing, rather than obscuring it or giving the author a means to avoid having to work at his/her words - and so long as it's not a personal insult to myself or someone else.  (I don't care too much if someone says "f*** that" but "f*** you" or "you f***er" - if it's meant seriously - is over the line for me.)

I don't worry too much about offending anyone because I figure most people are used to way worse language than mine!  I'm not using any words I haven't known since I was, like, nine :p  And I was sheltered!
  • skald said on Sep 10, 2007....
Vicarious says that swearing emphasizes the languages. That is what grandpa said to me, if you swear and don't mean it it is not ugly it emphasizes the language. Well then we swear differently from you. We talk about hell and the devil. Somehow I find it cleaner that what you are saying. One does not have to like hell or the devil on the contrary so why not shout up what  you dislike. No I don't think I want to swear in my blogs.
  • Mamie said on Sep 10, 2007....
I use the offending words sometimes, but usually not against someone, as far as I can recall. I am not offended by other people using it, but if it is way out of line, I think the person needs to do a re-look in the mirror. There is nothing in SC that would ever get me that upset.

Funny I can curse like a sailer at home if I feel like it, but I curb my language here as best I can.  I don't know why.  I am basically a nice person, and I don't feel the urge to use foul language when I can get my point across without it.  I will usually find a way around it, even in private messages!

Hmm funny you should ask. I think I have  said b4 I don't cuss & Why.  Dont know where it is Durn. I Don't judge others, And I am not offended by it.  When my 2nd daughter was 2 (1974) she said a cuss word.I told her she couldn't say ?? it was A Cuss word & Little Children aren't allowed to say those words.  She then asked the Question that changed my thinking..(which they so often did!) "How old do I have to be to Cuss?!" I thought and said nobody "should" cuss and I would not anymore..should I slip, it was ok to say Mommy you said a bad word. Yes even angry, more so when angry.. I didn't like people to use really bad language around my children, most people repected that. every once in a while though one of mine would pipe up with "ahem.."mommy they said a bad word" I would say  they honey I m not their  mommy....and not everyone believes the same as us...

When I was in Cali. a few yrs ago for a mem. for my Father I was with my sister and niece (<22 yrs then). When i got out of the car I hit the corner of the window with my funny bone.... It hurt so bad and i said  "Owie grabbing my elbow then said " Ohh bad 4 letter words..bad 4 letter words" My niece laughed so hard she cried.

  • Lioness said on Sep 10, 2007....

I could make a sailor blush in RL.
I try to keep my posts relatively clean for the most part on here though.
It's my "upbringing" on computer forums. The good ones like to keep the site rated PG-13 or even G at a few. So I've learned how to 'discuss' on these sorts of things without using cussing.
Now believe me when I say I will cuss as much as I want in my own section, it's mine and I will do what I dayumed well please. If you don't like it, don't read it, I ain't makin' yea!
While in others, I might throw one or two into a post if I feel it really puts emphasis on what I am trying to get across, but I try to keep as clean as they keep it themselves.
Again, ask anyone who knows me in RL, I can make a sailor blush with my mouth!
(And no, I don't kiss my mother with this mouth either!!!)
  • Suddenrain said on Sep 10, 2007....
I will if I'm really upset. If I swear, you know I'm upset. I find it to be kind of pointless use of words in a sentence, unless you are using it to express an emotion. I try not to use the really bad words either. But on occassion my lips slip. Somehow, all those words just take the intelligence out of a sentence to me.  :-/
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Sep 10, 2007....
In blogging or even in real life I'm not big on cursing. Sure, I will let one slip every now and again, or if I'm looking for a more emphatic effect, I'll employ the occasional expletive.
  • vacantmind said on Sep 10, 2007....

I say let it all hang out. Of course, I don't cuss much. My oldest cussed my grandmother out when she was two so I kinda learned my lesson the hard way. I have been known when angered to let the words fly. You will know that I am really mad when that happens. I'm not easily offended so cuss away and I believe most kids learn these words at school and a few we haven't heard. In Jr. High they make up there own.

Does anyone else find the statement "I can make a sailor blush with my mouth" a bit open to interpretation? Who came up with that? I know its a common phrase but it makes me giggle everytime I hear it.

  • nytquill17 said on Sep 10, 2007....
Heh, reminds me of a quote that used to be posted at my old (writing-related) job, attributed to Mark Twain.  This may not be an exact recall:

"Every time you are tempted to write the word 'very' in a sentence, write 'damn' instead.  Your editor will strike it out and the sentence will be just as it should be."  :p
  • travelr712 said on Sep 10, 2007....
language conveys thought and emotion as best as it can. the better question for me has always been, why are some words considered worse than others? they're all just words! des was raised to believe bloody is on the same level as fuck is to me. language is very cultural, because of that very essence of conveying thought and emotion. therefore, i use it in that manor. when shit is warranted, shit will be returned. when god is warranted, i will rejoice.
  • Pontius_Pilate said on Sep 10, 2007....

I am tolerant of any language used, my primary concern being how thought worthily the passage is. But I will say that the over use of profanity weakens the linguistic power of anyone. Also, there is no better way to expose your weak vocabulary or feeble expression power then the over use of profanity.
  • sweet_cookie01 said on Sep 10, 2007....
a little use of expletives is okay with me even if i dont use them much... some people express their selves that way better. But i think we can use other words without talking dirty to express what we feel.
  • vacantmind said on Sep 10, 2007....

Pontius Pilate I know very well that you would never go there but we grew up with people using that phrase and it just cracks me up. My father actually told me that once when I was ranting at my step mother. My response was "I hope so." He didn't find it funny. Where did that phrase get started? It just makes me giggle. Sorry.

Cute blushing sailor chicks! I want one.

I try not to curse at all. But than, when I am with people who do curse, or when I am mad, or when it just needs to be that much more "meaningful" I don't hold back.
It is the same with blogging for me. If it comes out, I'm not going to hold back, but I try to be nice and gently most of the times =]

in our language swearing is reserved for the "old and mature people". if you are young ( anyone who is still supported by his parents) then you can't swear at all. We don't have equivalent swear word for Asshole. Actually there is, but if you're a filipino and you hear someone call you "tumbong" I think you'd laughed yourself til you got stomach ache. :)
The word "putang ina" is a bad, bad swear word that you won't want anyone to say to you. It means your mother is a whore.
I don't swear that much but I do sometimes in my blogs. The usual swear word that I used are : Punyeta, gago/gaga and lintik. they all mean very little compared to P.I.
Punyeta is of spanish origin. I don't really know what it means. heheh.
    gago/gaga -means aggravating people.
lintik- means lightning. now would you consider that a swear word?

I sound like a rap video in RL.

Here, though I don't use it often, when I do, I like to get creative with my cuss-words.  No reason to repeat the old standards, you know?
Terms like "Ass-hattery", and "douche-bonnet" comes to mind.

This brings up an interesting question for me.  Why do I tone it down here?  Is it because I want to show the esteemed members here the proper respect?  Or is it my desire to portray myself in a different, more positive manner here?  Clearly it's the former, but the latter may play a larger part than I'd like to give credit for....
  • Pontius_Pilate said on Sep 11, 2007....

I seem to mix up my chosen cuss words quite a bit.
Most of the time when I am about to let out a holla at the gods themselves and am trying NOT to cuss...
    lmao... make sense?
So say I'm workin' on the car, slam my hand on something, start screaming you son of a water eating buffalo licking lilacs!~!
Or then there are the times I could care less and let the vulgarities fly... While I do add in some rather interesting ones, such as "ass-hattery". I've used stained douche or ass clown a number of times. No reason to let it get bland...
