I can't help but watch the news daily and none of it is good. Are there any real winners? With my oldest son serving in the ||{1}|| it has impacted our lives more than most. I am against the war all wars but don't confuse that for lack of support for our troops. The good news is Jason is not in Iraq or Afghanistan. He is however in the unit near Lebanon and I assume has been helping with evacuations. We miss him and love him, his mom takes it hard, no matter how much I comfort and reassure her she cries almost daily.

War is heartbreaking. It seems humans never learn.

yoho: how often does he get to call? i know he can't have a mobile phone and the situations marines endure are just a tad tougher than the army guys. is your son active duty or a reservist who was called up? irrespective, i will keep your son in my thoughts. any idea when his tour will be over? ed

He is active with about two years remaining. Last talked with him last tuesday, he called from a British air base near Lebanon. Told me to watch the news if anything big happened it was them. I assume he was involved in the evacuating US citizens since he is in the 24th unit, air support. Since he is deployed on a ship he has called whenever he hits port, he called & spoke online via MSN from France, & he called from Rome. Never quite know when to expect a call, the military keeps dates, times, places pretty secretive for obvious reasons. Much better deployment than Iraq or Afghanistan Thanks

my brother-in-law had an 18 month deployment in iraq and he's infantry, so i understand somewhat, although obviously, it hits you harder as a parent. ed

Although i am a mother, my son is still very young. But I do know exactly who you all must feel, since I am writting from Israel. It's no fun over here and the news are getting worst. Almost every family has some one in the army - but we have not yet raised an all country high risk situation. If you whatch the news, these terrorist are making a number of videos telling all Muslims all over the world to start attacking every non-Musilms. I hope that will never happen. Neither Syria nor Iran got involved in this war yet, but it is in fact a war. Just like Iraq. We already have large number of death, involving citizens and soldiers as well. So please, if you really love your sons, DO NOT share any details online!!!!! Don't talk about this as if a summer vacation - he called from here, and sent a letter from there! Please! No one should write about where and where these boys are! Ever! Not even after their return. Do yourselves a favor and keep it to your selves - for their safety. Z

You have a valid point and even though it may not appear so I am very careful. Everything I have mentioned can be found via news sources so no matter what I say or do it is public knowledge. In fact I get more details via news than I do directly from him. That being said I appreciate your concern and send my best and hopes for safe and peaceful times ahead for you, your family & country.

Yoho: Like Silver, I both do and don't know how you feel. My closest friend is in Baghdad, and while it's not the same as having a child in the Middle East, it still haunts me daily. I both abhore watching the news and cannot, at the same time, turn away from it. I'll keep your son and your family in my thoughts. I only wish there were more I could do. I think that's what is most frustrating, the not really being able to do anything.

I have a handful of friends. Less than a handful, really. My very best friend plays different roles. She changes, as needed, depending on my mood or what is going on in my life. She is my rock, my mother, my sister, my friend, my daughter, my soul...the...
