short version: celebrated author madeleine l’engle passed away, evidently of natural causes. long version here.

commentary: i remember reading a wrinkle in time and it was absolutely incredible. i fear we’ve all been diminished by her passing. i am regrettably utterly unfamiliar with her other work.

i've not heard of her, i've heard of the book you mentioned, but never read it.

As an English major, in college, I concentreted heavily on Children's Lit.
She was one of my favorites.  I had not heard that she passed away.  I've been wanting to read A Wrinkle in Time to my boys, but they're a little scared of the cover art.  It is, in a way, more terrifying than the Harry Potter books.  So, I think I'll wait a while longer.
    Thaks for posting this, ed.

l'engle was always one of my favorite authors. i can remember reading several of her books when i was younger and then reading them again in college and graduate school for various children's literature courses.

i'm hoping to be able to read a wrinkle in time to the little man soon, but i think i'll have to get a new copy as my dog-earred copy is falling apart from all it's use over the years.

First Pavarotti and now this....  Yet another loss to the arts....  Celebs tend to pass in threes, so I wonder who the next will be...

    Thanks for posting this ed.

infernal: [trout-smack!] your penance is 3 viewings of monty python films!

trav: that's a shame, you might want to consider visiting your local library or a book store.

pickers: it scared the hell out of me when i read it!

super z: i had a feeling that you've had fond memories of reading her, to be honest. sadly, they'll likely have displays in all the major bookstores shortly. :<

grape: yes, i was thinking about the rule of threes too. you're welcome.

I forget how old I was now when my mother first introduced me to "Wrinkle," but it was one of the literary "greats" of my childhood.  I have it now as part of a set of four.  I only realized today that the book was written in the sixties!  I reread it earlier this year and it still seems current.

The world is a little bit less today.  We have lost something irreplacable.

I have never had the pleasure of reading this author.  It sounds like a treasure has been lost.

I LOVED Madeleine L'Engle.  The "Wrinkle in Time" series was amazing, and I really liked "Meet the Austins."  She was a really interesting, intelligent, spiritual writer, and she will be missed.

nyt: that to me is the magic of superior writing--it always seems current.

infernal: then, you must go into the forest, find the tallest true and cut it down...with a herring!

CW: you might want to consider checking her out at your local library--i can guarantee they'll have her work.

stillseeking: welcome to my blog and thank you for visiting! and i agree completely with your sentiments.

Grape, in answer to your wondering who would be next, as unassuming noted in a post, Robert Jordan died Sunday.
  • nytquill17 said on Sep 17, 2007....
But then where does Brett Somers fit? (And Charles Nelson Reilly passed earlier this year...does that mean Richard Dawson is next??)
  • Zayda said on Sep 17, 2007....
Honestly, I didn't even know who Brett Somers was until I clicked that link.
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 17, 2007....
