Guess what I get to do...
Two hours of riding in the back of a Police Cruiser... sometimes getting out, sometimes running with them, but always... sitting in the back seat, behind the mesh barrier... with bad audio...
This is two hours that WILL seem like at least twenty four... because it will TAKE ME at least twenty four hours to transcribe the raw video I am watching to do this...

Seriously, tho, I LOVE my job... man, if only the work were consistent thru-out the year. It will subside soon. Have you noticed (of course you have) that the new season for a good many Television Shows is starting? They've been filming all summer and I've been transcribing them all summer for you. They, and consequentially, I ,  am wrapping  up for the year.

So... anybody know of some good, legit online work I can get into this Fall/Winter?

whoa--you did ride-alongs? i always thought you were a trucker!

No, actually, I purposely wrote that to be quite vague. I no longer drive truck. I hurt my back last year and can no longer do that. mouse over my name, it'll tell you I am a former driver... :-(

But my new job (which I thought I'd posted about, here, but certainly don't expect anyone to remember!) is as a Transcriptionist. I can do it from home! They send me raw footage over the Internet, and I watch, listen and type everything I see and hear, dialogue, action, camera angles, etc. It's the first step in the editing process when they finish filming and have the task of cutting and pasting the show together. It's pretty fascinating to watch!

I transcribe reality T.V. Shows for Hollywood. Not the Big Networks, but, networks like HGTV, the Travel Channel, MSNBC... shows like Lockup, Inside, LA Gangs, Mega Movers, Over Your Head, Deserving Design w/Vern Yip... many more like that.

So... when I posted, I deliberately made it vague, by way of teasing. I'm not actually IN the Police Cruiser, but the Camrea Crew is, and I have to watch and listen just like I was there... and believe me, 2 hours of raw footage in the back of a Cruiser... is NO picnic. Still, I love my new job! LOL!

That show these two hours is for is L.A. Gangs.

the shows are wrapping up filming, like I mentioned, though, and I'm gonna need to find a new gig for the winter. Damn.

Wind:  Hummmm...how 'bout doing some "Extra" work in flims?
I'll keep my eyes open for you about winter work.

    Did you transcribe 'Survivor China'?

Devine Design is my favorite!  LOVE IT!

I'm sure Cops work during the winter, maybe there will be more police work ahead of you!  That has to be the hardest footage to go through.  Pause, rewind, rewind and huh?  LOL!

Another thought...why don't you just do voice overs?
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 08, 2007....
windrider: holy crap, is that why you were silent for so long?! jeez, i'm sorry to hear about your back--what's the prognosis for recovery?

and i gotta say, transcribing sounds like nifty work. how'd you get into that?

Hi everyone! Lovely to see you all here! :-D

Daily - thank you for the suggestion, but, while I transcribe film FOR Hollywood, I don't live there, any where NEAR there in fact. "Voice Overs" and "Extra" work, as in working as background actors in films would have to be done where they're actually making films. As far as I know, no one in Kansas is making any films. LOL! But I DO appreciate the thought.

The work I do is as a Contractor to a Company that contracts with Production Companies to transcribe their raw footage. What that means is, we only do the shows that we have contracted to do. As I mentioned, we don't have contracts with any of the BIG networks. Divine Design is EXACTLY the kind of show we do most, but we don't have that contract. We have Deserving Design, Over Your Head and several others that are on HGTV,  MSNBC, The Travel Channel, etc., but you prolly haven't heard of them (ManLand, What's With That House, LOCKUP, Inside, Find and Design, etc.).

Survivor China, Divine Design and others are done by a production company we don't contract with, so someone else (VERY LIKELY IN INDIA!!!) is transcribing their stuff.

As for this job being seasonal, I really don't understand that. Plenty of production companies film in seasons other than summer. I haven't asked why yet, but I'm guessing that we simply haven't contracted with any of the production companies that do that. This company I work for is an expansion of an older company, and is fairly new, so perhaps things will change down the line. In any case, I need all the good vibes and wishes you'd care to send my way! :-)

Ed - :-) Nice to see you, too! LOL.

My daughter-in-law is a Medical Transcriptionist. I've been talking with her about taking training to become one, as well. Her sister heard about this Film Transcription job, and told her, and she in turn told me. I jumped on it, naturally! This company NEVER has to advertise for help (imagine that LOL!), it's been pretty much word of mouth. So you KNOW I am on my knees thanking God that this word came my way!!! Long ago I developed an attitude of gratitude and ever since then, things have actually been coming my way! I believe it's called the Law of Attraction...

As for my back... I have a degenerative disk in the lumbar region. Driving a truck aggravated the hell out of it, so... that part of my life is done. S'ok tho... I was getting tired of it. And now, the pain is much more manageable. Thanks for asking!

So, I finished the first hour-long tape last nite. 800 lines at 60 characters per line. This job pays .07/line, so that netted me about $53. I've been averaging about $150.00 - $200.00 a week since I started. That only just barely covers the bills, but  for now, that's okay. At least the bills are covered and I can free up my mind to worry about other things, LOL! No, I use that time to work on ways of creating more wealth. Law of Attraction applies here... :-)

Anyway, I jumped in here for only a moment to update you wonderful friends of mine, and now I gotta get back to that second tape. TTYL!

    Hey Wind-
They could be filming in Kansas...you never know!
    :-)
Why don't you try looking on www.craigslist.org ?

I do know the shows you're speaking of.  The guy on "What's With That House?" who the hell is he?  My Husband and I have been trying to figure out why we know him...We know who he is, it's just that we're trying to figure out what we really remember him from.
