Just curious as to how many of us there might be these days.

If you suffer from insomnia, is it occasional, frequent (more than once a week), or almost every single night?

Is it getting to sleep in the first place or staying asleep/going back to sleep once awakened that's the problem?

I can't remember the last time I didn't wrestle with going to sleep at least once a week. I'm up to about five bad nights out of seven right now, ugh. It's not staying there that's an issue - once I'm asleep, I can sleep through just about anything (my son's cries excepted, much to my dismay when DH is up with him already). No, I can sleep quite soundly - if I can ever get there in the first place!

(I'm not looking for advice at this point - it's been frustrating when remedy after remedy doesn't work so I'm just going to roll with it as best I can right now.)

It's gotten to the point where walking around tired all the time doesn't really bother me - after all, moms of young children are supposed to be zombies, right? pleasant, but still zombified...it's the occasional attitude change induced by sleep loss that gets to me. Chronic exhaustion (not chronic fatigue, that's actually arguably a medical condition) due to sleep deprivation usually, at its worst, leaves me with a bit of an "Ok, you win, whatever - just don't fight with me, I don't have the energy" attitude. Every now and then, though, I get downright grumpy, and I know all too well what happens when my temper is on a short fuse.

Today is one of those days. I'm fairly adept at keeping a tight rein on my temper, but you might want to don full body armor before getting too close. ;-)

So...what about you? Care to share your sleep woes?

Here I am with my bleary eyed self.  I can usually fall asleep, but staying asleep...  Now there's the problem.  I hate it when I wake up after only a couple hours because once I'm awake, I'm awake.

Many a night I've seen a late night post from you, infernal.  I think we're the only two here.  :-\

Sometimes I revere to a nocturnal schedule. And I do mean revert, because I have no reason to believe that a diurnal schedule is natural for me. Night is so wonderful is so many ways, Day seems vulgar and even empty by comparison, but simple facts of humanity tend to keep me in sleep conformity.  Maybe when I can finally become a drifter, I can go nocturnal in long stretches.

    Just us, Mimi and skymir?

Mimi: ((hugs)) I hope we both eventually have more normal sleeping patterns, though if you're like me, you've pretty much come to accept that it's not going to change anytime soon.

skymir: That's interesting...so perhaps for some of us, we're drawn to/awake at night because it's what actually works best for our bodies? As one who has always been a "night owl" in addition to experiencing long-term insomnia, I can definitely see where days actually pale in comparison. I never considered that perhaps some of us just may be naturally nocturnal. Thanks for making me think!

I used to be an insomniac but ever since I discovered Ambien, I sleep like an angel.  I hate insomnia, don't like the way it feels, it keeps me awake.

Been an insomniac my whole life, used to get night terrors when I was little.  Working nights and sleeping during the day seems to help but I often have weeks where I hardly sleep at all.  Extremely frustrating!

Can add me to that list. But honestly I like it. It's meant I've had twice as much time to do and learn about a whole host of things.

It also means I can go the whole weekend without sleep from friday till sunday at parties and catch up about 8 hours on sunday night and still be fine for work on monday. So you won't hear me complaining about it at all.

i am a full pledged insomniac... it is very rare that i get to sleep in the right time and have a straight good sleep till morning...

i mostly fall asleep at around 1 to 2 am then i wake up 4 to 5 am... then i try to get some sleep at aroun 8 to 10 am. I do that just to compensate for the lack of sleep.

there are worse days where i really hardly get any sleep at all for more than 24 hours!

ed: I'm glad you've been having less trouble with your sleep! :)

mom: LOL! And I've heard good things about Ambien...I'm just too chicken to go that route.

Actorguy: I'm sorry you know what that feels like. I didn't have night terrors, but it appears that my daughter does.

Jade: That's a good point about having more time to get stuff done (as long as you can still learn/do things worth a crap once that certain cumulative exhaustion effect kicks in). It's nice to hear a positive take on it. Do you just need far less sleep than most people, then? I can swing about 4 hours/night for a week or two, but then it all catches up with me and I suck at life until I get more sleep.

sweet_cookie: ((hugs)) It really sounds like you're struggling with this. You have trouble going to sleep *and* staying asleep?? I don't know if I'd still be sane after a while of that going on!
