Luciano Pavarotti passed away for cancer. He was one of the most famous and most talented tenor of the 20th siecle. Please, read this link for more info.

In Italy people loved him. We were proud of him.

The aria "Nessun dorma" from the opera "Tosca"  by Puccini in my memory will be always connected to my sister. She loved this aria, especially the phrase "Vincero'. Vincero' ( I will win. I will win).
We gave to each other a cd with a collection of his best cantate.

My father used to listen to him when we were anchored in some port during our sailing summer trips. He used to hum along and when a particular beloved moment of the aria would arrived he would silence us and say "Listen. Listen this beauty". (Ascoltate che bellezza)

My mother loved him too. She used to give my father for Xmas at least one new cd with his performaces.  Many time coming back home i would catch her listening to him with the stereo on high volume while she was cleaning the house or cooking...

The media loved him. Wherever he was going or performing he was on the news and we loved to know about him. Then came the huge scandal when he left his wife of almost 20 years to marry a so much younger secretary. She will be crying over his coffin.

Pavarotti was also my best girlfriend Katia's favorite opera singer. She and another friend of mine were crazy for opera. A lot more than me. We used to listen to Pavarotti and Mozart while we were studying Kant and Adorno.

And finally.... i went to one of his many free concerts. He was extremely generous with his voice....he loved to sing..he would sing anywhere...and this time he organized a concert in Roma. The piazza was so packed i barely made inside its perimeter but it was worth.....his voice was just powerful and the audience was hypnotized...i mean, people of any age, even kids...People who certainly wasn't music connoisseur and yet loved him for that genetic link we Italians have always had with opera.

If you love music, if you love classic music and opera you must have heard of him...he was only Luciano Pavarotti after all.

oh Ginger, I too think he had the voice of an angel. I would listen with my eyes closed to be able to feel the beauty of his music all the more...I am freaked out that he had cancer, I did not know!! I hate cancer, it is far too sneaky!!
His music will live on, I know that for sure! thanks for letting us know! Mamie

Yes it is a tragic loss to the Opera world,he will be greatly missed.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Mamie...yes, he had pancreatic cancer and if you had looked at his pics months after month you would have seen his huge body shrinking and shrinking....but he had a beautiful life...and he made beautiful things....

Rupert.....yes, he will be ....despite the many critics that thought he had become too commercialized, too easy on the mucics he was singing..

but he had the great merit to make opera a so much more appreciated art for a lot of people......

Today we have lost a great man. Great in body, greater in voice and even greater in soul.
  • lioneljay said on Sep 06, 2007....
He was a generous, gifted soul. The world is a little less beautiful today.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Bottie......yes...... he was indeed larger than life......in any meaning.....

LJ......you are so right.....very generous..... to the point his own mangers tried to stop him to go on tour years ago after a health scare but he insisted to go..i mean, that man had enough status and money to live of glory but he just loved to sing.....

I was hoping someone would blog this (but didn't feel qualified to do it myself).

What an amazing voice and what a great loss to the opera community and the world.

ginger ~ yes I saw it on the news this morning when I came home from work I thought of you right away.  Although I am not a big fan of opera, I have heard of him, and heard is wonderul voice.  He will be missed, but his voice will live forever.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Wow....i dont know what happened here...i guess Luciano wanted a BIGGER space in my blog....lol...

Infernal....well, you can always count on me to do the dirt job....lol....:

Jade......absolutely......this is his most remarkable achievment, i agree.....
He has been attacked by the opera purists because he was going to all those glamour concerts with rock singers, like he was degrading opera...but truth is no matter whith whom and where he was singing his voice was always the best.

  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Daily and Quietone..........i am expecting a call from my mom...i am sure she will call me today....for some reason she still think we dont have the news at the same moment.....lol.....she called me when Princess Diana died, when Bush got elected....stuff like this...she wants to share the moment...

I bet everybody on paper and tv will be talking about his death....I know they will be showing on tv his concerts and appearences.

It is pretty big for us. I think the only other icon we have left with this level of worldly popularity is Sophia Loren.....

i dont want even imagine what will happen in my country when she die....:-)

His passing is indeed a great loss.  I had seen in the news that his health was failing after his cancer treatment, and I am sad to hear that he has passed.  His warm voice was unmistakable.  So unique.  I'm going to have to put on one of his cds now.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Grape.....yes, he was battling the cancer by a long time...last year he seemed of having gave up but with a amazing recovery he went out of the hospital with his own legs...talk about a love for life!

Oh yes...put it on......let's listen to him together...;-)

I bet he is singing in front of Saint Peter right now....lol...

  • Trombonist said on Sep 06, 2007....
Yes he was a great man and a wonderful singer. He will be missed. Although I am not an opera fan, I did enjoy hearing him sing and watching his concerts on TV. When he got together with the other two great tenors it was a night of pure joy.
  • secretlife said on Sep 06, 2007....
    *smiles*
yes, i'm sure he's singing for Saint Peter right now.

he left a legacy of beauty for all of us.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Trom.......welcome to my blog!.....The Three Tenors...oh yes....they balanced each other just perfectly....

Secret....... how come? No stories of opera singers in your family?..... lol...

  • sweet_cookie01 said on Sep 06, 2007....
my mom and I was shock when we heard the news....he was one of my favorites... i dont think anyone out there can sing the way he does... he made me like opera because he makes singing those fun... very sad news.

Ginger--I'm glad you blogged about this. I thought about it this morning, but didn't feel equipped to do so. I think one of the things that has always struck me about him, aside from the beauty of his voice, was that he was both larger than life in spirit, and joy, and love, and seemingly so very comfortable in any situation. He just had this unnameable quality about him that seems to draw you in.

Over the years, I've bought every Pavarotti CD I could lay my hands on including the Three Tenors CDs. I think, aside from him opera performances and recordings, that some of my favorites are the Pavarotti and Friends CDs where he performs with so many artists from various background and genres.

GS, this is an absolute, incalculable loss to music the world over.

I heard about this last night and was so surprised, I knew he was sick but didn't think it was that bad.  I found out about him when we watched the 3 Tenors concert and I was to young to appreciate it, but Nessum Dorma always drew me in and he just always made it even better somehow.  It was nice to read about your experiences with his music and I'm happy to read that he gave free concerts, I never knew.

What a wonderful tribute to a great man!
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Sweet.....yes, i always liked the fact he would attract any kind of people......he sang with a reggae musician too....could you believe it? ...lol..

Zayda....yes, i really like that concert too......it is a perfect example of how cross-musical he could be....

Ed.......wonder who is going to be the next big one...before him the opera was kind of stuck to the times of Caruso and we are talking Thirties....it took many years before Pavarotti showed up...

Ninja.... he could sing in front of Clinton or the Pope and the next day he would sing for the simple pleasure of doing it in some piazza, somewhere....

    Picker....what a voice!

Ginger...  thanks for putting the video up.  I'm crying more now than I always do when I hear this.  My husband and I loved his voice so much, we bought every cd but also decided to learn to sing along with Nessun Dorma.  I was singing it to myself one day in work, and a lovely gentleman picked it up and sang the entire song to me so beautifully everyone nearby applauded.  It was wonderful, and I cried, of course.  We saw him about 4 years ago in North Carolina, and he was brilliant!  It's true, he did sing the easier arias, but perfectly...perfectly.

Ginger- I loved him since I saw him in the movie "Yes, Georgio" many years ago.  He has a truly beautiful voice. There is always so much passion in his singing.  He was an incredible person.  Good night  Luciano.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Twyla.....you are so right......everybody knew him....that episode with that man it so indicative of how much he touched people all over the world....i am happy you liked the video....

there are several others on Youtube....even with the Three Tenors.....

    Mom......yes... buonanotte, Luciano.

I loved Pavarotti. I always associate him with my dad (also big and bearded) who would sing along with him (no mean feat) whilst doing the washing up. When I heard the announcement on the radio yesterday I was so shocked... It's such a shame when such amazing people die. But so great that they were there in the first place! I've never seen anyone else who could match his power, his warmth. Big hugs gingersoul X Scarlet X
  • skald said on Sep 07, 2007....
He was very much loved in Iceland. I am sorry he passed away.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 07, 2007....

LG......oh yes...stunning ...he sung it in front of the Pope, if i recall correctly....

Scarlet.......first a big hug to you {hug}...good morning, Lady.....:-)

Yes, we seem never completely grab how fortunate we are in certain period of times when we witness special people or events...usually its Time that later gives us teh right prospective ....but with Pavarotti it has been so easy feeling that exceptional value.

  • destinydiva said on Sep 07, 2007....
I got a text message yesterday saying this

I placed a bet with my friend that he would last out untill christmas, darn I lost a tenor!!!!  (a tenner is 10pounds in england)

sorry, shouldnt laugh at a time like this :-)
but I thought the text was funny.

It is very sad that he has passed away, but its good that his music will live on in the hearts of millions forever :-)

    Destiny xx

  • gingersoul said on Sep 07, 2007....

    Destiny.....LOL.....good one....

And, you are right,  we will keep listening to him for years...

This makes me think about how even more dramatic were some deaths in the past .....i mean, we have so many ways to relive certain experiences: video, cd. movies,documentaries, pictures...

For people living when none of these inventions were possible or maybe were allowed only to few.....when somebody passed away.......they were totally gone. No way to see them again ...only the collective memory would help to keep them alive.....

We are lucky in this too...we can simply pop a cd in our stereo and Pavarotti will sing again or watch a video and see again Princess Diana marries or dies.....or any other of the many persons and events that shape our time.

  • RollingC said on Sep 07, 2007....

  • gingersoul said on Sep 09, 2007....

Still......long time i dont read you...welcome back! How have you been doing?

Yes, he wasn't that old at all...but being so heavy certainly accellerate for him certain aspect of his disease....

  • sweet_cookie01 said on Sep 10, 2007....

i think he is the only opera singer who can sing with bryan adams, micheal bolton... and yes even barry white!!!!...  i think no one can match him... he even sang with the spice girls!!

my mom has been mourning for how many days now... she kept on tearing up... aaaahhh knowing her it might be sometime for her to get over it!

  • redrocks said on Sep 13, 2007....
Unfortunately right now all newspapers are just talking about his heritage and the supposed problems with his wife..
I really would love all this stuff not to make the newspapers.. I mean, it's such a private thing..
