We all know about the scam that forced the government to recognise "Jedi" as a religion (albeit a pretty nonchalent one) but on further investigation, does anyone else think that, joking aside, it makes a whole lot of sense?

Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy (lets call it earth for arguments sake)
Jedi use their powers to defend and protect, never to attack others.
Jedi respect all life, in any form.
Jedi serve others rather than ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy.
Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training.

Personally, I reckon we could role a whole heap of athesists, potential religious followers and maybe even some converts into this.

Seems like rather than downtreading others, it allows a pursuit of personal advancement for the benefit of others. So rather than believing in a god, we believe in a way of life!

Doesn't that seem more realistic and appealing?

Not if it's fictional. There has to be truth to that way of life, or few will devote their lives to it. There will be some, but few. Obviously we can't manipulate a fictional "Force," so all that we're left with is a state of mind, a philosophy. There is a fine line between changing the way you think and lying to yourself. Jedianity, if you will,  has the virtues of selflessness and the pursuit of knowledge, but it seems Christianity is the closest real-world match to what Jedi would be like as an actual religion.

Coincidentally, my granddaughter is a PR agent for George Lucas and they come up with many stunts that keep his name and products in the public eye.  I haven't talked to her for awhile, so I don't know if she, personally, had anything to do with this one.

With that said, it shows that secular humanism's heart is "freedom of expression", whether that of religion or porno.  The problem with secular humanism is that "decency" becomes an arbitrary matter (situation ethics) and that the masses tend to gravitate to the lowest common denominator, as the explicit sexual situations in entertainment and the blantant use of the f-word in the language today demonstrates.

This is very scary, because history has shown that civilizations go through this stage before crumbling.  Marriages and familys fall apart because the standards of right and wrong become fuzzy.  Trust and commitment disappear and it becomes a contest of who can steal the most from whom.  We are beginning to see more of this from wall street to main street, as the subprime debacle unravels.

So you can break all of the rules of decency that have been established since the beginning of the written word or pay the price.  The rules have changed, but there is always "the price" to pay in the end...in this world and the next, just like Jedi.

The Biblical story of Tamar is a story about sex and death and greed. It would make for a good Showtime mini-series....
