It sometimes looks huge, but just how big is soulcast, really?  I was scrolling through the users list this morning trying to get a feel for how many actively participating bloggers we currently have here in this community.  It made me nostalgic to see a lot of names that I haven't seen in a long time... people who posted actively for a short or long period of time and then were gone.  Many others I'd never even heard of.  Yet throughout the ten months or so since I started blogging here, there are quite a few who have been constant and with whom I've developed relationships of one sort or another.  And there are many new arrivals that I hope will stick around for awhile.

Without making a detailed count, I estimated that there are probably less than 200 people actively blogging in this tightly-knit community at this time. Does it seem about the same to you?  I have to admit, there are times when I click on a username that I've never seen before, only to find out that this person has been actively blogging and interacting for even longer than I have, but somehow, we've never crossed paths.  That never ceases to amaze me.  It would be more understandable if there were more active bloggers here.

So, what's your estimate?  How many of us are out there?

If you're new to soulcast, or if you've been here for a while, but you and I haven't crossed paths before, please drop a note and let me know you're here.  I promise to stop by your blog and see what you're all about.  :)

Hi kruu, I figured about 250, 300 at any given time.  I sure don't know them all!! that is 250 to 300 not 250thousand, threehundred...LOL just caught that!!
  • queenparanoia said on Sep 05, 2007....
yeah soulcast is getting big... probably 100 active bloggers... =)
  • tizzygirl said on Sep 05, 2007....
I'm not sure that I've ever commented on your blog before but I've read it :)!!  I was a bit confused by you calling people pirates!! lol! But I think I didn't get it because I haven't been here that long!  Anyway I was going to say, I would have never guessed there were 200 active bloggers!!  I see the same names over and over and I'm surprised on how many people I've already met and interacted with!  When I first started blogging I thought that I would get lost in millions of different blogs and that I would never know anyone personally!  WOW was I wrong, and I'm glad I was wrong!  I have met so many wonderful people on here because of how "small" it is compared to what I expected :)
  • kruuyai said on Sep 05, 2007....
quiet:  Yeah, at first, I thought there were thousands and that I was just circulating in a little niche that I had found and imagined that there were a lot of little niches.  Later, I thought there were probably about 250 or so who were really active.  Lately, it seems a lot less... probably because of summer holidays..

queen:  haha, big... wow, a whole 100.  Ya' think?  :)

tizzy:  Hi.  I think you have commented once or twice.  I can understand your confusion about the pirates if you came in on the middle of things.  For an amusing explanation, see my (short) first pirate post... Living With a Pirate.  That should clear things up.  I'm glad that this turned out to be a small community, too.  Just like in real life, I do much better in small groups and developing real relationships with a smaller number of people rather than spreading myself too thin amongst a cast of thousands.

I asked myself this same question over the long weekend. I did some digging and there are about 200 users that have created more than 70 comments in the past 3 months. I think this is a good rough estimate for the number of active users.
  • kruuyai said on Sep 05, 2007....
SC:  Wow... this is a first!  A comment to one of my posts from the big SC itself!  So, more than 70 comments in the past 3 months.  Is that 70 total comments, or 70 comments on a single post?   (I've never approached 70 comments on a single post, but I consider myself a pretty active member).
  • tizzygirl said on Sep 05, 2007....
ooooo you got a comment from SC!!!!  That means you are really special :)
  • beyondtheveil said on Sep 05, 2007....
kruu- I did a quick mental scan a few weeks ago and came up with about 100. But I'm sure you and Soulcast did a better check than I did to find 200.

Is two hundred a large site? It sounds very small to me but I have nothing to compare it to. On weekends and holidays it does seem to dwindle badly.
  • kruuyai said on Sep 05, 2007....
beyond:  Considering that the site is open to the world, I would say that it's pretty small, especially compared to My Space, Facebook, etc.  But I like this waaaay better than what little I've seen of those other sites.  I'm sure this will grow eventually.  Weekends do suck here.  That's for sure.
  • skald said on Sep 05, 2007....
I had no idea but I thought we were many and I know I have not seen half of them.
  • kruuyai said on Sep 05, 2007....
skald:  lol, if you want to see half of them, you'd better hurry up, because they come and go pretty quickly around here!  :)
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 05, 2007....
i was going to guess 200-250, but i see that we have a pretty good official estimate already! :>

ed:  We all seem to be guessing in the same range, so I guess it's a fairly good guess.

  • gingersoul said on Sep 05, 2007....

Well......200 is a very small number, if you ask me. But sometimes it seems we are one or two too much...lol...

Why are you people so impressed to see Soulcast anyway?

They always show up when you ask a question about the site.

    They are just very nice.

Our most popular member, SoulCast, has 82,463 subscribers, many of those with no descriptive biographical sketch or blog entries, quite a few likely-abandoned IDs, numerous multiple-ID'd folk - How are any numbers even estimable?

  • tizzygirl said on Sep 05, 2007....
I love the pirate stories!!  I can't wait until you have new ones about your new place!

  • kruuyai said on Sep 05, 2007....
waking:  Oh, I get it... duh!  :)

ginger:  I guess I've never asked a question about soulcast before.  I feel like a valid member now.  lol

mOOn:  The way I made my estimate was by scrolling through the usernames on the first few pages just to see how many I recognized.  After the first 8 or 9 pages, I hardly saw any names that I knew.   After being here for almost a year, I feel like I have a fairly good handle on who posts regularly, although I admit I''ve missed people here or there.  If you look at soulcast's comment above, you'll see how he did his estimate.

tizzy:  Wow, you are a fast reader!  There actually is a post about my first day at the new place.  It's called Another Door Opens.  Enjoy!  :)
  • destinydiva said on Sep 05, 2007....
I had to beg and plead just to get a hello from soulcast...  and you are getting a whole proper comment...and all you did was ask ....a really good question!!!!  :-)
this question always tickles away at me ...
like you said, I go to some posts, who I never heard of before and see they have been here longer than I have, that always makes me wonder how come I have never come across there paths before...

    @kru
you are one of our favorite bloggers :) I was counting 70 total comments.

    @beyond
I'd called 200 regular user a medium site. We also get a large number of "visitors" from search traffic, about 7k per day. They look at a few pages and leave most of the time.
  • husbandhater said on Sep 05, 2007....
Kru I think I seen something in the double diggets and the zeroes looked something like this:,000. I thought I saw 93,800 or something like that in the members directory

i would have guessed around 100 a day-
but on my paranoid days i think it's just a handful of us.

Cool kruuyai! Not only did Soulcast comment to you, but you're one of their favorite bloggers? What a compliment! You are an excellent writer, so I'm not surprised :-D

Sometimes I think 200 active members seems like a lot. I rarely see that many people around, actively posting, if you don't count spammers. But I guess there are a lot of people I just don't run across. Over the weekend, sometimes it feels like there is about ten people here! But I think 200 is a good number.

Hi Kru, just dropping by to say that I am still here.  I have not post any blogs recently, but I have been reading what others wrote.
  • SoulCast said on Sep 05, 2007....
    hello destinydiva! I didn't know that diva's begged ;)

    @evil_twin
traffic goes down on the weekends. The truth is that most people play on the internet while at work.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 05, 2007....

Soulcast.....now i am jealous.....lol.....i even said you are just nice.....

    Working 24/7, Sc? Never rest?......

Curious......how many people work at Sc?

  • kruuyai said on Sep 06, 2007....
destiny:  Yes, sometimes I feel like I should make it my project to find out who some of those persistent bloggers are that I haven't come across.  Sometimes they end up being really good bloggers and it boggles my mind how I could have missed them... the first one that comes to mind is hotaka.  I had actually seen him comment on other posts off and on for a long time before I checked him out.

SC:  Wow, thanks.  I didn't even realize that you actually read the blogs.

hh:  Yeah, that's a total of all the people who have ever signed up (because once you sign up, you can't un-sign up).  But the vast majority of those have never published a post, and a lot of those who have posted have come and gone.

secret:  I seriously think there are days when there are just a handful of us... and they always seem to be the days when I need the most attention and can't get it!  Wah, wah, wah!  :)

e_t:  I know... I'm shocked, too.  And re the body count, I'm sure there are rarely times when all 200 active spammers are on at one time.  Actually, it would be really cool if SC would have the same kind of feature like they have at hospitalityclub.org where you can see on the home page a list of exactly who is signed in at the time.  I would like that, because I would go directly to their blogs to comment to increase the likelihood of having an ongoing conversation in the comments.

nursecutie:  Hi, thanks for stopping by.  I didn't know they talked to people, either.  I've only seen it happen on soulcast's own posts.  Kind of makes you feel like Big Brother is watching now, doesn't it?  (just kidding, sc... feel free to stop by any time).  You don't know how everyone does it?  I'll tell you how I do it.  I don't have a job or a life.. lol.  That's all going to change on Monday.  I start my new teaching job.  First job I've had in 5 years.  In fact, I should be writing lesson plans right now.  This place is so addictive.  Maybe that's why, when people do manage to kick the habit, they stay away.  They're afraid to come back and get sucked into the vortex again.  lol

golddust:  Hi!  I'm glad you're still around.

SC:  That surprises me to learn that people play around so much at work, but explains why so many seem to be available during that time slot.   I wonder what their bosses would say?  :)

ginger:  Now, now... no need for jealousy.  He only said I was one of their favorite bloggers.  I'm curious about how many work at SC, too, and whether silverwhisper is one of them?  lol
  • gingersoul said on Sep 06, 2007....

Kruu.....LOL....just kidding.......wanted see if Soulcast was still here reading or if they went to bed... :-)

No, my question was about their real office in California...i saw the picture they posted one day.......i am curious to know how many people work there...

Most of us are male, myself included, but we had a female intern that used the soulcast account for a while. She isn't here anymore, but one of our marketers is a girl. If you found soulcast through an ad she is probably the one that setup the ad :)
