I am now getting myself in a stew over tomorrow at work.

Tomorrow is when the children return and I meet my class of 30 eager and not so eager pupils. I don't know them from Adam and vice-versa so it's going to be stressful.

And I am scared stiff that I'm going to stuff it up. I'm terrified that my mind will go blank and I seize up completely or worse that I spew utter drivel (some might say I do already...) or I make some horrendous faux pas.

As usual my imagination is going into overdrive when it doesn't need to so please, please help me find something else to think about or sleep with be a total non-event tonight as I lie there worrying myself into a state.

OK, here's what i think you should do. come up w/ a set of 3-5 handy non sequitur/"transition" things you can do to distract the class from whatever has just happened. you might not be able to stop it from happening, but i find that even in the case of a big problem, if you can recover sufficiently well, it's really not so bad.

alternately, just imagine that ET is watching with the kind of support that only he can provide.

I'd like for you to remember that the vast majority of things we worry about never happen.

Alyss......i totally agree with Beyond.....and i learned for direct experience....

Let go the control mode at night ..you cant control what you will be doing tomorrow ..since tomorrow..well. its tomorrow...at night those kids are sleeping..

Focus on the present..what do you want eat before going to bed? What book do you want read? What tv show you want watch? The only work related thing permitted is choosing your outifit so you dont have to rush in the morning..

This trick always calm me down....:-)

These last  2 years i have been living alone i found out that if i want sleep good at nigth i have to simply IGNORE any stressful possibility to stress..so i deliberately leave anything i can do the next day out of my door..

Drink some nice tea, have a nice warm feet bath...there is nothign that you have to worry about at night that can't be done tomorrow...the world is sleeping too...let it go...

    I bet tomorrow after school you will have a big laugh about this panic attack..{hug}

When I took theatre courses in college, sometimes I would be recruited to appear in somebody's class production, and I'd have to act on stage for their class.  Or in acting class, I'd be assigned a role.

The night before the show, I'd be nervous.  The morning of the show, my body would be nervous even if my mind wasn't.  My digestive system would be a wreck.

Once the show started and I was onstage, either I'd be good or not so good.  I remember after playing the Wizard in Wizard of Oz, the teacher of that class said I was a "ringer", meaning he thought I was a professional actor or something, not just some college kid.

Then again, when I played a lovestruck young man in Chekhov's The Seagull, someone in the audience really slammed my performance something awful.  I'm glad I don't have it on film because I bet the criticism was right.  I must have really been dreadful.

That's what your post reminded me of.  The pre-show nervousness or stage fright.  The only good thing about it is that it ends.  24 hours from now it will be over, replaced by other thoughts.

Tell us how you do.  And good luck.

What you need to do is stop thinking and just get on with the job.  I'm sure you're talented, so just let it flow out.

Take a few deep breaths before walking into the classroom and breathe out all the nerves.

Try to realise this:  first there is your body, within your body is your mind, and behind the tangled fibers of your jumpy thinking mind is your pure and true intelligence.

When you get in a kerfuffle, sit back and watch what your own mind is doing and realise that you do have complete control over your thoughts.  If you let your thoughts run away with themselves, the intelligence behind the brain cannot see past the clouded mess of thoughts and worry that is being generated.

These thoughts serve no useful purpose, so just give them up and get on with the job you enjoy!

    Hope this helps.

Well here's my first bit of advice. Don't think of them sat there naked. Works for job interviews maybe but not teachers.

It does help if you're prepared though.

When I used to coach kids at sports it was easy. Get them involved early with something fun. Then it's easy to bring them back to learn something. Plus I had a lot of tricks up my sleeve that they all wanted to be able to do (worked just the same with adults too actually).

It depends what you're teaching and to what age.

I am drowning my sorrows in a bowl full of kid's cereal - Cookie Crisp, dinner of champions. I could have easily made a case for eating cookies for dinner, but at least this way I can pretend to have eaten real food.
