Right now I could just about cry.  I finally figured out what was going on with the bumps on my legs.  I had suspected (after a few days) that perhaps I wasn’t “alone”.

My good friends Wolfgang and Isis have fleas.  Lots of them.  I have no idea how we’re going to get rid of all of them.  I’m going to talk to their “dad” and let him know that it’s out of control.

I love animals, but this may be a big enough irritant to make me become a hermit.  I may stay in my room until the roommate figures out how to rid the house of the pests.  I’m pretty sure I’m going to be eating out a lot since I’m too paranoid to be spending a lot of time cooking or even imagining that the fleas have taken hold of the food supplies as well.

I had hoped that the bumps were some sort of weird water flea that I was getting from my walks by the shore.  I’ve heard of them.  But after spending a few days away from the shore it’s abundantly clear that my furry friends are the cause of it.

I’m going to try to get a picture of my furry foes to post in the next day or two.  It would seem that wolfie is camera shy, though the cat is a whore for such attention.

SW - I'm doing research today and will talk to my landlord/roommate about it tonight.  I fear that the dog and cat will lose their beds.

I'd have the roommate call a vet for the best way to treat. You not only have to treat the animals for fleas, but the eggs that will hatch for quite some time.

BTV - I definately think both animals will need long term treatment, and the house will need a bomb at least once.  This is not going to be a quick fix and I'm not going to pay for it.

Unique.....I m not sure if I should express first that I m sorry or that I m angry your roomie would allow this to happen. Poor you! Poor animals! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Sep 04, 2007....
botoni - I'm going back and forth myself.  The animals seem oblivious to it, though I'm sure without fleas they'd feel so much better.  I knew that bachelors aren't always neat housekeepers, but how is it he tolerates the fleas?!

    unique-

fleas aren't so easy to be rid of-

i had a husky once who got them multiple times over the course of the summer-

    worst summer of my life.

basically what we did was take the animal to be 'dipped'--- the stuff they use is very strong!  i actually did it once myself at home, and if you do that, you have to wear rubber everything to protect your skin....cancer causing stuff.

while the dog/cat is away-------you have to bomb the house.  fleas go in a cycle and you might not get them all the first time---- plus the eggs that beyond speaks of-

we actually had an exterminator in who did this and had to leave the house for 2 days.  they bombed 2 times.

this is terrible.  i'm so sorry.

btw, there are such things as sand fleas too----these live in sand (at beaches) and can certainly bite like a regular flea bites.

i am allergic to sand fleas--

have you seen fleas on the animals?

  • uniquely-ironic said on Sep 04, 2007....
SL - no, I can't say I've seen them on the animals.  I do believe they are from the pets though because after being gone for a couple of days, walking in to drop some stuff at my room and walking out of the house I ended up with about 1/2 dozen fleas.  I only stopped to pet the dog and scratch the cat.

Unique...did these animals ever wear any anti-fleas collars? Or do some treatment?

I do the Advantix Anti-Fleas once a month to my dog.  Knocking on the wood..it seems working and i am  walking him for long period of times in the grass....

What happened is nasty and frustrating.

The landlord shouldn't ever rent a room in a house in that condition...and i am sure he knew about it..i mean...fleas is not something you dont notice....

  • uniquely-ironic said on Sep 04, 2007....
gingersoul - I didn't see collars on them, so I assumed they were being treated with advantix or something.  I am frustrated, but don't see in point to accusations.  I just want this to be taken care of.

ugh! Sorry for this trouble! You need a break, I'd say! Sending you some good vibes to get through this!!
  • nursecutie said on Sep 04, 2007....

Everyone already suggested what I would suggest........LOL But it is important to make sure the pets are treated with flea repellent like gingersoul suggested. Advantix is a very good one! Flea collars don't work very well from my experience.

Aside from bug bombing the place, I would buy flea killing carpet shampoo and rent a carpet cleaner. Do you have carpet or hardwood? I guess if you have hardwood that's not necessary!

But the eggs are usually embedded in the carpet and the bomb will not kill them usually. You need to actually remove them or they will just hatch and start all over again.

I hope you guys will get this taken care of! Fleas are so hard to deal with! But I don't they think they usually get into your food. They are usually only on the ground or on the animal. They eat blood and not real food like ants or something.

Mamie - thanks for the vibes.  Some days I think it's only these little troubles that hold me together.

nursecutie - The entire house is hardwood floors and linoleum, so I lucked out there.  There is an area carpet in the living room, but it's so disgusting that I'm going to replace it sooner now rather than later.

    Update:

I talked to my roommate/landlord last night when I got home.  I think my newest roommate may have already said something to him because he had just Advantixed the cat and the dog.  He agreed to bomb the place, but we all three need to figure out a time when we can all be away from the house for the 3-4 hours.  Hopefully I will be in a less itchy environment soon.

well, a bit late here, and glad to see the flea situation is beginning to be handled.  All good advice for sure.  Good luck.  It can be done, And it will work.  But if the animals go outside, it will be an ongoing thing.  But controlable. some people are more alergic to fleas then others.  I know I am.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Sep 05, 2007....
quietone - I would guess that I am more sensitive too.  I am always getting lumpy bites from mosquitos, so fleas seem to have the same taste for my sweet blood.
  • skald said on Sep 05, 2007....
Sorry about that. Bet it hurts. I got bit by a star flea and I did not like it one bit. They kind of walked up my leg. One bite there another there. I never thought this would happen in my county as we don't have many biting insects. It happened where I sat on stairs waiting for a friend come home and I did not know there was a forsaken star nest above me.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Sep 05, 2007....
skald - you are lucky to live in a place where there aren't too many biting insects.  Unfortunately it's just the opposite here, with such temperate living conditions.
