Whole milk, 2%, 1%, skim...plain, chocolate, strawberry...cow's milk, goat's milk, rice milk...

Do you drink milk? If you do, what kind? If you don't, is it solely because you dislike it?

I don't drink milk as a general rule, but I'll make an exception for chocolate milk (and I don't mean milk I've added powder/chocolate syrup to - it has to come from the store that way). I don't put milk in my cereal, and even if I did, I wouldn't drink it afterward as some people do.

When I do drink milk, it's 2% - probably because that's what I grew up on. Whole milk is even rougher on my stomach than 2%, and skim is too thin-tasting for me.

Little one has been on a milk strike ever since we took her last bottle away, but she gets calcium from other sources and she's getting 1/2 a Flinstone's vitamin every day anyway, so I'm not concerned and neither is her pediatrician. With my luck, she'll continue the mother-daughter trend of lactose intolerance to some degree anyway, so it suits me fine to not have a milk drinking kid right now.

I have a cousin on my mom's side who would only drink milk - plain white milk - for years and years. He still might be that way (and he just started college) for all I know! Yuck.

How about you?

I'm lactose intolerant. I have no patience for lactose and I won't stand for it! LOL

Sorry, I was thinking of the show Seinfeld for a moment........LOL

Um, I don't really drink milk either........I like it on cereal, but I don't ever drink a glass of it. It grosses me out for some reason........

But I usually buy 1% for us because I don't like skim milk and my tummy hurts if I drink anything richer than that.......I'm a little intolerant, but not all the way! LOL

When I drink milk, it's always skim milk, though I mostly just use it for cooking or in cereal.

My girls are big chocolate milk drinkers (I can get 1% chocolate milk at our Wal-Mart).  We go through anywhere from 4 to 6 gallons of a week; now that school has started, we probably won't buy as much.

Milk is only for cooking or for tea these days.  I'm not lactose intolerant, I just don't like paying for it, and I'm trying to watch what I eat anyway.  Though I will have a glass very rarely - certain foods just need milk!  Like popcorn.

I used to only get 2%, but I have gone down to 1%.  Don't know if I'll go as far as skim though; I agree, it's just a bit thin.  I don't put milk on my cereal either (except Honey Bunches of Oats).  I'm a slow eater and I hate soggy cereal!
  • silverwhisper said on Sep 03, 2007....
i don't as a rule: usually, the only reason we have it in our home is for guests who use it with coffee or as an ingredient in recipes in cooking/baking.

however, in the past 2 weeks we've begun getting into cereal for breakfast and the mrs has converted us to soy milk. i don't really notice much difference in breakfast cereal apart from it being a tad sweeter.

I only like chocolate milk that's premixed and milk on cereal. I prefer 2% or whole milk because it tastes better. But Natalie doesn't buy that, so I make due with 1%. It's not as good to me though. But I don't think I've actually drank a glass of milk since I was a kid.

I have to say to nytquill though, you drink milk with popcorn? I've never heard of that! Milk and cookies, yes. But milk and popcorn? That's a new one to me!

( was reading to Hubby ,hes younger than I......After saying Boy am I old...he repies "Glass Bottle?!" ) boy o boy...any way I prefer non- fat now...I find it refreshing ICE COLD!

we drink skim, just for the health reasons...I drank it more when I was allowed to have yummy muffins, cookies, etc. I am afraid of soy because I heard it contains phyto-estrogens which may or may not be linked to breast cancers...anybody heard the same? Mamie
  • nytquill17 said on Sep 03, 2007....
Yeah, I usually have a glass of milk when I'm eating popcorn.  I eat a lot of weird stuff (well, normal food but in weird preparations/combos), but I always thought the creaminess of the milk washed down the saltiness of the popcorn perfectly :)  I get a lot of weird faces when I do that though :p

Every once in a while I'll drink a glass with dinner and it's always 2%. We use it mostly in cereal and soup.
  • gingersoul said on Sep 03, 2007....

I like milk but i drink only fat free or 1%. I have to have cappuccino for breakafast.

I try to buy as often as my wallet permits me organic milk because has not growth hormones or antibiotics stuff inside.

Mamie...yes, i heard that......by several years now.....more and more studies are showing this chance of a link between soy and breast cancer...i stopped eating my industrial quantity of tofu for this reasons two years ago and i dont drink soy milk......

its nasty anyway...unless is chocolate soy milk....so why bother?.....lol.

My friend who is in treatment for breast cancer had soy milk cancelled from her diet.

  • MissMimi said on Sep 03, 2007....

Milk on cereal and in recipes only, unless it's chocolate milk.  And it's always skim, unless I buy a small amount of whole milk for a specific recipe.

I love milk - skim. Frankly I'd drink a lot more of it if more restaurants sold skim milk. It's not unheard of for me to have a couple glasses of milk with my dinner. Not alwayss but still...
  • Zayda said on Sep 03, 2007....
I don't drink milk often; when I do, it's usually skim milk for me. But we have 2% in the house more than we do skim because the little man doesn't like skim milk.

I prefer 1% chocolate milk over "plain milk".

I think soy milk tastes horrible, so I won't drink it unless it's mixed in something, like a smoothie, which gets rid of the taste of the soy milk.
  • Zayda said on Sep 03, 2007....
BTW, this edition of the UC Berkley Wellness Letter reports that "Researchers at the Mayo Clinic recently reviewed all the evidence and concluded that soy has not been shown to fuel breast cancer cells".

Apparently, according to this link, the effect/benefits of soy are different in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women.

I am so not a milk drinker....I find it kinda nasty.
But I buy 2% for my girls....they LOVE milk.

I will drink chocolate or strawberry milk. And I
use milk for my cereal but I sure as heck dont
    drink the left over....eeewww.
  • Suddenrain said on Sep 04, 2007....
I had been drinking 2% for the longest but I became lacyose intolerant over time and it started bloating me to the size of a cow so I switched to 1% which still effects me. I will drink chocolate milk but only premixed from the store. But I LOVE ice-cold milk. I will even add ice to mine to make it extra cold. I prefer milk with dinner, I was raised that way. And on occasion I do hanker for just a plain cold glass of milk and will down a full glass. But that is very rare. The gas and bloat I get isn't worth it to me. And Soy tastes nasty.
  • mom said on Sep 04, 2007....
I sometimes but very rarely get thirsty for a big glass of milk.  I mix milk in my protein drinks but even at that it is 1%.  I am not lactose intolerant, just not thirsty for milk very often. I have never had soy milk but love soy nuts.
  • ninjapirate said on Sep 04, 2007....
I love milk.  When I was younger I had 2% most the time.  Then I switched to skim when I figured out it was healthier and I think it tastes about the same anyway.  The best milk I've had though was in Switzerland, tasted just like cream or half and half, maybe it was, but they insisted it was regular milk.

  • minniemouse said on Sep 04, 2007....

I love, love, love milk!  But only skim milk!  And also only at night.  Oh yeah, and I have to see where it comes from.  Not the cow, just the container.  LOL  I won't drink milk in restaurants or anything.  Just a wierd thing, I know.

I'm actually surprised at how many people don't drink milk.  Interesting post!  :-)  Minnie

    Milk is for baby cows.

Milk is pretty unhealthy, even if you are lactose tollerant. Resent research has also shown that soy milk can be very unhealthy. Goats milk is the best option but pretty funky tasting.

so as a rule, I only use it in coffee in little bits. If I can I buy from the farm directly as it is less-hostile to helath than store bought. I avoid large quantities of soy also.

Milk in moderation is my motto.

no I do not drink milk, or even have it in my coffee.  I will buy fat free half and half and use that.
  • RollingC said on Sep 04, 2007....
I love milk and still drink it but in less quantity for the obvious reasons of losing weight as I like whole milk for it's flavor.  My nephew stopped drinking milk when they took his bottle away (probably was upset at that and showed it by not drinking it anymore)
Your intake of calcium can be monitored by taking vitamins or just having a good diet.
  • Ceinna said on Sep 04, 2007....
We don't drink a lot of milk because it costs so much.  Usually it's for cereal and cooking.  Sometimes the kids will get thirsty for it and drink a glass.  If we have cookies or cake or something like that we'll all want an ice cold glass with that.  And we drink 2% now.  Drank whole milk for years...and 2% is as low as I can go.  LOVE chocolate milk any way I can get it.  LOL!

Walkingharmony - we have one store here where we can still get milk in glass bottles.  It's a lot more expensive, but there is nothing like the taste of ice cold milk out of glass instead of plastic.  (and btw, I remember the cream on top, too...lol)

Definitely, drinking milk should be in - in fact, the standard recommendation is a glass per day and recent research has shown that we need milk even more as we age because of the need to maintain the bone structure in its original good/flexible form.

I drink milk and chocolate everyday.

I drink lactaid, which is designed for lactose intolerant people.  I can drink milk, but find that lactaid is less sweet.  I get the 2% when I'm by myself, but the whole milk when the kids are with me.
  • PassionTraveler said on Sep 04, 2007....
Soy or Rice milk all the way.

I've been allergic to milk most of my life. Mom says I never could "stomach it" as a baby, and can't breathe after drinking a glass in adulthood. She took me off of it until I went to live with my grandmother, who put me back on milk and I suffered respiratory infections most of my childhood until I stopped on my own in high school.

Fermented forms of dairy don't have the same effect on the allergy, but as I've aged, I have also developed lactose intolerance as well. Only low fat cheeses and yogurts can I tolerate.

Some study confirmed that most children on Cow's milk suffered far more respiratory illnesses than children not on Cow's milk, a connection not many authorities are willing to acknowledge.

My mom always says Cow's milk is for baby cows, not humans.

I like soy or rice milk or non-fat milk....but I don't ever drink a glass of milk unless it's with spaghetti (I have no clue why) or cookies.  I do use milk though in coffee and on cereal but I don't drink the milk after I'm done with the cereal.  I don't like chocolate milk, especially the ones pre-mixed because they taste slimey!!  I don't like chocolate all that much either....Banana milk is really good though but I don't drink it that much either!
I would like to share though that I have friends who have a ranch and they have some cows they get their milk from and I've drank it fresh from the cow and it tastes like grass....its gross and I don't get how it goes from that to the milk you buy in the store...something about pasturizing or homogenizing????

I didn't realize there were such polarized views on milk - I don't think I'll weigh in on those, other than what I said in my post about what I like/don't like. Interesting points - and thank you everyone for replying! :) I don't have time to make 30ish individual replies at the moment, but I do appreciate each and every one of your responses.

I wanted to add, I love cereal milk! (whats left in the bowl) I have also added that powdered Equal Sweetner to a glass of milk, to get the same sweet effect. It's pretty good.
  • RollingC said on Sep 05, 2007....
Actually, once you get a taste for the flavor of milk, all you have to do is heat it up and drink it warm....it's naturally sweet.  Whenever I make my cafe-con-leche with American coffee (milk and coffee) I don't use sugar as the milk is already sweet enough.

I spent hours being tested for lactose intolerance. The test was positive. I can't drink milk. Lactose is milk sugar. A few months later I found I couldn't digest lactose, fructose or sucrose - any sugars. My pancreas wasn't producing the enzymes. So that was a waste of time. I tried soy milk on my corn flakes and then had to give up corn flakes on medical advice. One day, I shall end up in hospital again with a tube into my jugular vein and white stuff being dripped in to me to feed me again. I wouldn't have minded all those tubes going in to me if they had injected a drop of scotch now and again!
