I want more riddles! Those of you who have read my posts this week, and there are at least a few of you, know that I love riddles. I collect them. On my last post, hombre commented with 2 riddles for me and I solved them. So that gave an idea.  Everybody knows at least one riddle, so pull yours out, dust them off and send them to me. I’ll try and solve them…. hell no!  I will solve them…. I’m that good! LOL

It doesn’t matter if they’re elegantly easy like this one….

I am the end of Silence and the beginning of Ecstasy,

The end of Time and the beginning of Eternity.

What am I?

Or moderately mind-boggling like this one…

You have eight marbles, one of which is a tiny bit heavier than the others. All you have is a two-sided balance (like the one Lady Justice holds).  In just two weighings, how can you find the heavier marble?

Or devilishly dastardly like this one….

You are in a basement with three light switches, all in the off position. Upstairs are three light bulbs, but you can’t see them from the basement and you don’t know which switch controls which light. You can manipulate the switches any way you like, but you can only go upstairs once. How can you determine which switch works which light?

I love them all!  So while you are working on this tantalizing trio of teasers, send me some more and I will get to work.  As usual, I’ll post the answers tomorrow, but in the mean time….

                                    PLEASE… I WANT MORE!

Hi Actorguy! I am just as hooked on puzzles as you are and now you have my mind working overtime.  I have a few, but will have to think about them and i'll get back to you :-)  In the meantime I will put brain power into solving these. . .thanks!
  • polarheart said on Aug 31, 2007....
Ok, the first one is easy, so I wont spoil it for anyone else.

No.2 - Does 1 weighing = moving / removal of marbles?  I would do it like this, if not:  Put 4 marbles on each side of the scale. . .one side will go down; the side with the heavier marble.  You now have 4 marbles.  Put 2 marbles on each side, one side will go down - remove one marble from each side one into your left hand and one into your right hand according to the sides of the scale.  If the marbles level out you will know that the one you are holding in your hand on the side it went down is the heavier.  If the heavier marble remains it will tip the scales.

    No.3 - I still need to think about :-)
  • tiposcettico said on Aug 31, 2007....
well Actor the first riddle is too Easy, or rather 4 Easys

for the seccond puzzle i'd start by numbering the marbles. then weigh marbles 1,2,3 against marbles 4,5,6

as to the third; would it still work with compact flouresents?
  • tiposcettico said on Aug 31, 2007....

oops; oh by the way it's me hombreescéptico.. i had trouble with with my logon and had to re-sign up with a new name. oh well, i like this one better any way.
  • Actorguy said on Aug 31, 2007....
polar: good to see you! How are things in Jolly Old ?  The first one is too easy, but then I said it was. Hmm... I think that would make three weighings if you remove marbles.

tiposcettio: I like the sound of the new name, although I have no idea what it means LOL.  Not much Spanish in Canada, I'm afraid. I think you are pretty good at these too! You are definitely on the right track with your first weighing. I don't have much experience with compact flourescents so I'm not sure.

    Send me riddles.....Please!
  • Me-Myself&I said on Sep 01, 2007....

ok i'm going to TRY to do this.....

There were these 3 friends who were going to spend the night at a hotel, their

room was going to be $30.00 a night. So they each put in $10.00 and went to

pay the desk. The man at the front desk saw that they over paid for their room,

it was suppose to be $25.00 a night. He took 2 dollars and put it in his pocket and gave

the girls each back a dollar.

    NOW....9 times 3 = 27....right?  each girl has 9 dollars in the room.....because

the man gave back a dollar each to the girls......ok so 27 plus the 2 dollars in the man's

pocket equals...29!   SO where did the other dollar go???

Now i know the other side of the "coin"....i've been a cashier....$25.00 in the till

$3.00 back at the girls and $2.00 in the man's pocket equals $30.00 BUT

the other math just doesn't work out. Am i missing something....9 times 3 is

27...right??!!...................................***smile*** can you explain this to me?

  • Actorguy said on Sep 01, 2007....
MeMy&I: Hi!  Thanks for reading. I can explain it, in fact I already did in my last blog here!  Weird huh? that you should post the same riddle that I posted earlier in the week? Thanks for playing ,though.  You got any more?
  • polarheart said on Sep 01, 2007....
Hi Actorguy!   Ok, it just dawned on me!! Weigh 3 marbles on each side i.e. 2 spare.  If the scale levels out then you only have the 2 marbles left to weigh.  If the scale tips whilst weighing 3 on each side, take the marbles on the heavier side and place 2 of these marbles - one into each side of the scale.  If it levels out you know the one in your hand is the heaviest, if it tips then its obvious! ha-ha!

Now for the lights one. . .still thinking
  • polarheart said on Sep 01, 2007....
    Here's one for you:

4 people need to cross a bridge at night.  They only have 1 torch between them.  The bridge can only support 2 people at a time.  Person A can cross the bridge in 1 minute, Person B in 2 mins, Person C in 5 mins, Person D in 10 mins.  Everyone has to cross the bridge in a total of 17 mins.  Can it be done?  How?
  • Actorguy said on Sep 01, 2007....
polar: OK I must be missing something.  Do the two people have to walk together because they only have one flashlight (torch)?  And does someone have to bring the torch back before the others can set out?  Anyway its 4am here so I will probably think about it tomorrow.
  • polarheart said on Sep 01, 2007....
Actorguy, you are on the right track!
  • tiposcettico said on Sep 01, 2007....
that's a good one Polar. should i just answer it now or wait for the others?

    ok Actor here goes:
you might not see me at night, but i'm usually heard.
i'm often called, and usually answer.
i try to keep moving, but often sit a spell.
    who am i?
  • tiposcettico said on Sep 01, 2007....
well Actorguy compact flourecents produce little heat so they would probably have to be left on longer (than an incandescent bulb) for this to work.
  • Me-Myself&I said on Sep 01, 2007....
    oh well.....lol...you have a good day.....   :~)
  • Me-Myself&I said on Sep 01, 2007....

let me try again....ok....you need 6 equal lengths of?????(i used toothpicks)

can you make 4 equal Triangles out of the 6 toothpicks?

i hope this gives you a challenge! **smile**

    see ya

  • tiposcettico said on Sep 01, 2007....
hi Me-Myself&I . do you have to break some toothpicks in half?
  • tiposcettico said on Sep 01, 2007....
oh i just figured it out!
  • Actorguy said on Sep 01, 2007....
polar: OK, took me a while but here's my answer. I'll call the guys 1,2,5 and 10. First 1&2 go across (2 min total) and 1 returns with the torch (3 mins). Then 1 stays behind and 5&10 cross (13 mins) and 2 returns (15 mins). Finally 1&2 go across (17 mins). This was a good one.
  • Actorguy said on Sep 01, 2007....
MeMy&I: With my big fingers, its kinda hard to get those little suckers to stay where you put them but I think I've got it. You put four of the toothpicks into an over-lapping square so that a chunk of toothpick sticks out on each corner. Then you put the other two tp's across the diagonals of the square and you get 4 triangles. Good one!
  • Actorguy said on Sep 01, 2007....
tiposcettico: And here I thought you were an amateur after the two easy ones you left on my last post LOL. Not really secure in my answer but I'm going to say you are a wolf.
  • tiposcettico said on Sep 01, 2007....
OOH this thing is so anoying. is there no spell check. can i not import graphics from paint or some thing. help doesn't even have a search window!!!

Now that I've got that out of my system, back to the riddle; with an expansion to the original.

you might not see me at night, but i'm usually heard.
i'm often called, and usually answer.
i try to keep moving, but often sit a spell.
    i'm here and there
    in and out
    i sit and jump
    and slink about
    who am i?
  • polarheart said on Sep 02, 2007....
    Actorguy, well done!

Tipos, your riddle sounds like its pertaining to an (alley) cat?
  • Actorguy said on Sep 02, 2007....
tipos: you should have a google-like search window in the top right and bottom left of your screen to search for tags. You cannot import graphics or photos.  If you can convert them to jpeg, you can post them on Flickr.com and embed them here.  I usually write my posts in Word and then copy them into the comment window here. That's the only way I know of to get a spell-check.
  • tiposcettico said on Sep 02, 2007....
    Thanks for the tips Actorguy.

No, not an alley cat. Perhaps the next part will help.

you might not see me at night, but i'm usually heard.

i'm often called, and usually answer.

i try to keep moving, but often sit a spell.

    i'm here and there

    in and out

    i sit and jump

    and slink about

    i move slow or fast

    my voice comes quickly

some folks say i'm rather prickly

    who am i?

  • tiposcettico said on Sep 02, 2007....
Wow this is soo cool. Really, try it. I got this from walkingharmony' blog.

1.while sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift
your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

     2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air  with your
    right hand.
     Your foot will change direction.!!!!!!!!!

  • Me-Myself&I said on Sep 02, 2007....
nope! "equal" triangles.....i can see you now...lol....
  • Actorguy said on Sep 02, 2007....
    tipos: are you a rattlesnack?

MeMy&I: Do you mean equilateral triangles, where all three sides are the same length?
  • Actorguy said on Sep 02, 2007....
MeMy&I: Wait!  I think I got it.  You put three sticks in a triangle and then build a pyramid with the other three!
  • tiposcettico said on Sep 02, 2007....

you just make a square with 4 sticks. then 2 opposing diagonals

  • tiposcettico said on Sep 02, 2007....

    Hi all.

    Hey Actorguy

    rattlesnack ?

    lol.

    No not a rattlesnake

Mabie the next bit will help.

You might not see me at night

    But I'm usually heard

    I'm often called

    And usually answer

    I try to keep moving

    But often sit a spell

    I'm here and there

    In and out

    I sit and jump

    And slink about

    I move slow or fast

    My voice comes quickly

Some folks say I'm rather prickly

    When still up I'm down

    When down up moving

    Destination no assuming

    Who am I ?

  • tiposcettico said on Sep 02, 2007....

    Polarheart.

I'm sorry, I was just re-reading some stuff and realized that i had attributed the alley cat guess to Actorguy when it was in fact yours. Ooops. I guess I should be more careful when I'm blogging tired. Sorry not an ally cat. But  I hope that you will keep trying.    8-)

  • Actorguy said on Sep 02, 2007....
LOL at rattlesnack...maybe thats what a mongoose calls them!

I don't have a frickin clue what you are LOL.
  • tiposcettico said on Sep 02, 2007....

It's a snack and a musical instrument all in one. Developed in the early 1800's by the Earl of Sandwich, because “sometimes We don't feel like a whole sandwich, but do feel like a light meal and kicking up our heels”, it quickly became a favorite of traveling minstrels, for whom a gig and/or a meal could be a long way off. Of course it is well known that this is also the era in which the term “starving artist” came into vogue.   LOL

Well Actorguy it's pretty quiet in here. Have I scared the others off of with a combination of run on sentences, poor gramer/spelling and this crazy riddle?

  • Actorguy said on Sep 02, 2007....

actor~cant see any anons now :-)  yep its a towel :-) xx
  • Actorguy said on Sep 11, 2007....
Sorry rmuxa, just realized I forgot to post the answers!

    1.  I am the letter E (obviously...I said it was easy!)

    2.  Polar had the right answer above... leave 2 off and weigh 3 against 3, then leave 1 off and weigh 1 against 1.

    3.  I like this one!  Turn one switch on and leave it on for 5 minutes or so.  Turn it off, turn a different switch on and run up the stairs!  Feel the two dark bulbs to see which one is hot.  That's the switch you turned on first!

    Did that make sense?
  • Actorguy said on Sep 11, 2007....
"that man" is your son, and your father's son is you!
