The page you were looking for no longer exists

Today, after work and running the little man to swim lessons and a pizza party, I have been sorting through the last of a pile of "memories" (papers, cards, etc.) on my desk. I'm apparently spring cleaning in the later summer/fall. (Leave it to me to do thing backwards or at my own pace.)

As I was cleaning, I ran across a stack of postcards that had been torn out of magazines as well as scraps of paper with random quotes on them. I paused at this one, which strikes a chord within me:

Risk!  Risk anything! Care no more for the opinions of others, for those voices.  Do the hardest thing on earth for you.  Act for yourself.  Face the truth.

~~Katherine Mansfield

And while, I have a favorite quotes blog already, I thought it was time to revisit the idea for that blog entry, especially since we have so many new members lately, and have everyone share some of their favorite quotes.

I don't think I posted/saw these last time, though now I'm too lazy to go back and check:

"In the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed."
    -Kahlil Gibran

"Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children."
    - also Kahlil Gibran

i recently observed this to someone else:

    william wordsworth quoth:
poetry is the spontaneous overflow of emotion, recollected in tranquility.

what i love about this is that it marries the twin keys of both inspiration and wordcraft.

    i am also fond of:

    william blake quoth:
no bird soars too high, if he soars with his own wings.

    william blake quoth:
the most sublime act is to set another before you.

    william blake quoth:
expect poison from the standing water.

ah...it feels good to flex my blake-fu. :>

A poet who reads his verse in public may have other nasty habits.

Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.

Your enemy is never a villain in his own eyes. Keep this in mind, it may offer a way to make him your friend. If not, you can kill him without hate, and quickly.
--Robert Heinlien, The Notebooks of Lazarus Long

The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.

We have normality. I repeat, we have normality. Anything you still can't cope with is therefore your own problem.
--Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Five exclamation marks, the sure sign of an insane mind.

Genius is always allowed some leeway, once the hammer has been pried from its hands and the blood has been cleaned up.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Writing is the most fun you can have by yourself.

    - "Surely you have considered terrorist activity?"
There was another pause. Then the spokesman said, in the quiet tones of someone who has had enough and who is going to quit after this and raise chickens somewhere, "Yes, I suppose we must. All we need to do is find some terrorists who are capable of taking an entire nuclear reactor out of its can while it's running and without anyone noticing. It weighs about a thousand tons and is forty feet high. So they'll be quite strong terrorists. Perhaps you'd like to ring them up, sir, and ask them questions in that supercilious, accusatory way of yours."

It wasn't a dark and stormy night. It should have been, but there's the weather for you. For every mad scientist who's had a convenient thunderstorm just on the night his Great Work is complete and lying on the slab, there have been dozens who've sat around aimlessly under the peaceful stars while Igor clocks up the overtime.

Expendable: Ah, more Douglas Adams! But the quote that especially catches my eye is: "The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it."

It brings up a big point in my issue with most people's definitions of open-mindedness.

pontius pilate, is there an attribution for your second quotation? it feels naggingly familiar.

I have used it before, but I honestly do not know where it came from originally.
