Who's reading Battycat (73):
Just wondered, do you think your Soulcast name affects the way people respond to you?

I was here before under a different name, and although I wasn't here long under that name, and I've been here even less time with this one, i've already noticed a difference in the way people have reacted to me.
I had to change my name, it wasn't just a whim.

I think my new name describes me better, but I'm quite a serious person as well.
What do you think?

I chose my screenname to depict my personality. I think names have everything to do with it. Why do you think names have meanings? Back in the day,  in some cultures, like mine, they named people by what the names meant. We kind of lost that tradition somewhere.
I had one other journal site that I used before I came here. I used two different screennames there. It makes a huge difference, because the names we pick for ourselves are way more telling than our real names. Don't you think?

  • silverwhisper said on Aug 21, 2007....
you know, i think that it does. i think a name that implies certain personality traits is bound to do that, as yours or polarheart's do, whereas other names steadfastly do not.

Difficultsoul - Thanks for commenting, your right, but sometimes the names on here don't always seem to  match the way they come over in the blogs. I have another more private blog  on another site with a name similar to yours.
It's a shame that traditions in naming are lost.

SW - I'm glad my parents didn't use my "traits" as a baby as my name, I'd have been  The Angry Carrot" lol
  • secretlife said on Aug 21, 2007....
hmmm...i think your name does, especially at first when people don't know much about you.
  • gingersoul said on Aug 21, 2007....

Batty.......oh, definetely....words have power. We dont even recognize it at the moment. Words define us and our world and so why not a name?

I know why i chose mine. And there is always a reason, even silly , why a name its chosen.......I can't imagine having chose something like Pussilicious07.....LOL....

Difficult is right: since the acient times the name of a person was the most important possession.....the family's name was something to defend with the life....in the Middle Age not having a respected name, no matter how poor you might have been, was the lowest condition of all.

Now i am curious....which was your previous name? Can you say? And why you chose Battycat then?....:-)

I have a mad kitten, and I'm think people probably think i'm a bit odd. So Battycat :-) Not saying who I was here, I have my reasons.

My name here was chosen due to the name I normally use online, I did not want mixed in with what I posted here.
The other name I've used online for years, hell, you can find me all over the place if googled. lol
I choose this name as it came from a dream I had a few years back.
I won't go into full details here, but my first post under this name here explains the dream... Blog post is here.
    So if you're interested.
After all these years online, I've come to notice that the username is not always something that fits its user. I've noticed for those who are honest, decent people, the name will fit, in some degree. If they are nothing like they are in real life, asses, arrogant, self centered assholes, then their names will portray their "online" personality.
  • vacantmind said on Aug 21, 2007....
I chose my name because I usually act without thinking. I am impulsive. I don't know that alot of people get that with my username though. I have noticed people respond differently now then when I was under my other name. Also had to switch so I won't give that one away.
  • Fire_01 said on Aug 21, 2007....
battycat............Yes I believe that the name you choose on SC does form your SC personality in the long run. You sort of build your image around the name.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Aug 21, 2007....
Names definitely affect both the person with the name and their interactions with others.

A username is interesting because it usually reflects one or two aspect(s) of your personality over others, and it's intriguing to me as to what people hone in on regarding themselves.

  • beyondtheveil said on Aug 21, 2007....
I'm sure usernames do mean something to people. I have no idea what mine means to anyone, but must tell something about me. I came within an inch of using another one- never will know which would have been better.
  • sweet_cookie01 said on Aug 21, 2007....
i guess so, in some extent it does affects the way people treat you.
  • DesertMermaid said on Aug 22, 2007....

batty ~ well yeah names do affect not only the one using it but the others around too. Specially online where you dont have the actual person beside you. You made a good observation.

Names help to form first impressions when you know nothing else about the other person. Its like body language in real life that we pick up unconsciously.

Like the first thought that came to mind about you was an image of a cat! As for me, my name defines me. Its my identity.

  • rightwingwizard said on Aug 22, 2007....
Usernames have a definate impact on how others react to you, especially on first contact.

Take mine for example,  What image forms in your mind when you first see it?

I chose it with great care, but it does not signify quite what one might suspect.  You decide for yourself as you become more familiar.

    Expendable - Who's lecturing you?

PP - Wow that was some deam!

Vacant - hi, sometimes we can think too much :-)

Hi again Fire, are you planning to burn us all :-)

infernal - a username i think reflects how you're feeling at the time, I always find it difficult choosing.

Beyond - To me your name suggests you are revieling (spelling!) part of yourself you usually keep hidden.

Sweet - yes i think it does.

Desert - Hi, thanks for commenting, the cat is right lol

RRW - The image i have of you is that your politics are very right wing, and that you're quite a serious person, but i can't get rid of the image of a man in a long cloak a pointed hat holding  a wand :-))
  • ZsuzsiO said on Aug 22, 2007....

    As the Latin phrase goes:

Omen Est Nomen.  Name is Desteny (your name is your desteny)

I am a true believer of that. My online name is the same on every site, I only change the O to the front instead putting it to the end, and I only do that if for some reason my original doesn't work out.

It is my name in it's original form. I am the very same person online as I am in my personal life.

    Or

I just might not have enough imagination or creativity to make up cool names. For sure I wouldn't remember all kinds of different names all the time. I am a person of habbits and patterns. I like to eat the same kind of food, use the same parfume or toothpaste, etc... So I use this name all the time for a very selfish reason - to make my own life easier.

What do people get out of it? I know most people have a hard time reading it, spelling it, pronouncing it. They even have a hard time to write a short name for it, since no one knows where to devide it, what to cut off and what to leave on. And I kind of like that mistery about it. If you read my blogs, the truth is that I am an open book. Actually, way too open, way too honest. So at least my name can give me a bit of a spice.

There is one thing I absolutely love about my name. Once people learn it, they never forget it. No matter if you've learnt to spell it, or actually pronounce it, you will always remember that Zsuzsa, or it's more personal form, Zsuzsi, is a Hungarian female name. Some even remember that most Hungrian Jewish girls have this name because it originates from one of the oldest Hebrew names there are ( along with Judit, Eva, Eszter and Zsofi), but only if I actually told them that. But once you learn to pronounce it, I know for a fact, it stays in your head. People always tell me after years, that it is one they cannot forget. Not to mention that if you hear some one  talking about Zsuzsa, you know he is talking about me - unless you are in Hungary, or in a group of Hungarians, where this is one of the most common names regardless to religion.

There was a time I did not want to use Zsuzsa, but my middle name instead, because I thought it sounded more exotic. It was around the time I've got my ID for the first time, and I signed it using only my middle name. That marked me forever, cause from that point on my legal name has changed and people started calling me that other name. It was fun at first but soon enough I realised that the name doesn't fit me, I couldn't connect to it, and I started to hate being called anything than my original name. By that time it was too late, and the name just stucked, and I had to explain to people all the time that my original name is Zsuzsa and I want them to call me that. Sure enough, I immediatelly came off as a wierdo and my job got just that much harder to make people like me. Only after returning to Israel (two years ago) I've changed my name legaly back to it's original form, but still leaving my middle name too. Omen Est Nomen, Omen Est Nomen......

Now I can actually show people that my name is, in fact, Zsuzsa, and I am not just being weird.

Only friends and family call me Zsuzsi, or if a Hungarian person really likes me. I identify with Zsuzsi more than I do with Zsuzsa, only because I am still that little girl I used to be when I was a child. But I am used to be called Zsuzsa despite that it is a colder way to use this name. I guess it is my adult self, while Zsuzsi is the child in me.

I don't know, but thinking about it, it kind of makes sense.

    Good blog!

    Z

  • MissMimi said on Aug 22, 2007....
MissMimi isn't my original name here.  And I don't honestly know why I chose it.  I like being called Mimi.  It still sounds (looks?) funny when a few people from here call me my real name in e-mails or IM.
  • Mamie said on Aug 22, 2007....
i chose Mamie because it was my great grandmothers name...her full name was Margaret Mary...and I just kinda like that it sounds like the nice catholic girl that I am (wink, wink!)

THe sn I choose describes me and where I was at that point in my life.  I was still in school attending Chi Alpha and well I'm a girl.  I don't think people respond to me differently because of it or anything.
  • PassionTraveler said on Aug 22, 2007....
With a name like PassionTraveler, I guess you can figure out an aspect to my personality. My birth first and middle names mean Open Light. I would say that fits me as well. :)

PS, I have an entire post on my own birth name!

battycat -- yup, i think my sc name exerts some influence in how others read and react to my blog. but in my case, it's just a secondary, transient, even whimsical factor. but yes, i like my sc name as it is. wouldn't change it in a hundred years. why i chose "moonriver" is explained in my very first post, plus a background in a couple of more recent posts.

  • Battycat said on Aug 23, 2007....

Destiny - ok, i'll watch out for it.

the nickname I chose for soulcast has not a real explanation.
As for the name I usually use online, it has got a connection with U2 but it's not that evident if u don't know they made a live album in red rocks (under a blood red sky)
when I came here for the first time I just needed a place to be separated for my  other blog that is read by people I know. I wanted a place just for me, a sorta private notebook where I could write just for me.
I don't get a lot of comment but it's ok for me.
I tend to write just for myself, not for others and that's why I often put words down without explaining what I am talking about.

I believe that your name does have everything to do with it. It lets people know a little something about you before they even read your blog. It almosts determines what kind of topics you might write about and if it would be of any interest. Although, I try to read everyones blog, I've noticed that not a lot of people are interested in reading mine :-) thanks to you for reading!
