(assume it was planned)

...how would you greet him or her?

Yes, I realize that would depend on several things - how well you know the person, individual and cultural preferences, etc. - but what do you think you would do?

Are you the sort of person who hugs people right away?

Handshake?

Nothing/something else?

I find it difficult to contemplate on the grounds that while I'd have to know and trust someone pretty darn well (and like them a good deal!) to want to meet them face to face*, it'd still have awkward potential. I'd say I'm comfortable with a [very] few SCers along those lines, but I still wouldn't know what to do if one of them walked up to me and said, "Hi, Infernal, I'm So-and-So."

There are people I would accept a hug from - Mimi, for example :) - but I'd be too nervous to initiate one.

Handshakes weird me out because they say so much about a person, and I'm not sure what mine says about me. (I have little hand strength and my fingers tend to be cool, neither of which I find particularly appealing about someone else's grip.) They're also hard to time - too long and it looks dorky, too short and it feels like the person didn't want to touch me in the first place. A handshake also tends to feel very formal to me, and although a first physical meeting perhaps has some inherent formality, that's just not who I am. I hate feeling artificial. Besides, that formality would poof in an instant if we were blogging rather than meeting in person. Why have it there at all?

But to do nothing other than return the greeting seems a little lacking as well...ugh! I have no idea...not that it's terribly likely anyway, from what little I know of various SCer locations. (Boo hiss.)

What would you do?

* - just a PSA-type reminder that you should never meet someone you've only previously known online unless it's in a public setting and/or you have someone else with you.

infernal- There are five people I would want to run full speed to hug and hope for the best on their reception. Most others I'd shake hands with a smile and happy heart. Some seem rather reserved and I would honor that.

Then there are a couple I'd want to kick, but probably wouldn't.
  • evil_twin said on Aug 20, 2007....
Interesting question! There are a few people here I might feel comfortable hugging. But I'm not really the type of person who greets with a hug. Not unless it's family. I'm usually much more reserved and tend to offer my hand to shake, or even sometimes, I just offer a little wave. Like, "hey, how are you?" People always throw me off if they run at me and hug me, when I don't even know them. I guess it would really depend on who it was I was meeting :-)

    Yahoo!!!  Infernal wants me to hug her!!!  You bet, you little minx!  {{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}

Some I'd want to hug, some I'd really want to hug (if you get my drift), and some I'd want to clip in the ankle with the footrests (from what I understand it hurts like hell.)

I'll tell you this, if I ever meet up with mom, I am going to hug the stuffing out of her, and while I'm at it, slip some lime jello down her back.  Ooh, and I want to hug Botty so I can get a little feel of that glittery pink thong.  :D

There are quite a few bloggers here who definitely deserve hugs, some would get a two handed handshake, and one blogger would get a slap upside the head.
Oh, and D6fer would get a pinch!
  • gingersoul said on Aug 20, 2007....

    Infernal........what a cute post....:-)

Ok, like Beyond said......(hint hint) there is a pretty selected group of people i would hug with no hesitation.........no, better.....i would actually RUN into their arms and since i am Italian and we kiss on both cheeks i would kiss them too......lol...

For most of the others a big smile and a long handshake would be a good start....in a sort of "i know who you are" sort of smile....my handshake is a man-like one.......men always tell me they are pleasantly surprised by how strong i shake their hand....

Some Scasters would have a pat on the shoulder in a sort of  "good job" sort of kind.

Some would receive just a stare of aknowledgment while some would be completely ignored by me, exactly like i am doing here on Sc....:-0

If I met someone on here on purpose then it would mean that I really wanted to see them and therefore I would hug them and smile and laugh.  I would hug Mimi back and stuff the lime green jello down her shirt and give her a titty twister.  The guys I would hug just so I could pinch their butts.

I am definitely a hugger.  I hug everyone, men, women doesn't matter.  Some hugs are of course, more perfunctory than others.
  • wombat said on Aug 20, 2007....

I have thought about this alot!  I considered it the "unspoken question."  I mean, haven't we all been warned about telling too much about ourselves?  If it was planned, then I was in on it. I would act accordingly, and accept the consequenses.  But if someone came up to me at work, and said, "Hi, you are Wombat, aren't you?"  I think I would have a heart attack on the spot!  There are several I would like to meet, but some of those, only because I am curious if they are they are who they say they are.

There are others, that I would love to say I met in person, at least once.  But I sure don't want any surprises.  I keep SC and my real life as far apart as I can, when I am unsure.  Letting go and trusting is a big deal.  You know who you are.....

In the unlikely chance that I would actually commit to meeting anyone with whom I have become aquainted online, that individual would find me rather cold and reserved I think.  I do not meet well.   There would be no physical contact of any kind.

Having said that, there are a few characters being played here who intrigue me.  As such I might be tempted to make the effort to meet them.

Oh!?  You don't think we are all playing characters here?  No matter how much we claim to present ourselves as we do in real life, we each 'put on' a bit I think.  Much as we do in real life actually.  Reveal a bit of ourselves, conceal much more than we reveal.

I make people uncomfortable, face to face. Doesn't do much for me either. I think I'd just stay seated in the back of a taxi, watching them go about their normal lives.

beyond: If I saw someone running at me to hug me, I think I'd go bug-eyed for a minute - and then probably return it warmly. :) I say I wouldn't initiate a hug, but I've been known to surprise myself. I'd have to know it was ok in advance though. You're braver than I am!

e_t: Maybe I need a little wave - that sounds like a good way to handle things!

Mimi: I bet I could line up the right people for the footrest treatment. :-p And yay, Mimi hugs! ((hugs back))

sweet_cookie: I think I'd like to see that! :-D I know what you mean - there are a few people I'd be thrilled to meet.

pickers: A pinch, eh? I wonder what D6fer has to say about that! ;-)

ginger: I figured you would be a very warm and open greeter!

mom: If someone invents a teleporter, you and Mimi have to meet for sure!

broken: Hey, you can meet me and do all the talking for both of us. Works for me! :)

Actorguy: You know, it has been my experience that those with theatrical backgrounds tend to greet people affectionately. That's not a bad thing! :)

wombie: Did I hear someone call for pitchers of tea and lemonade? *hands glasses all around* I know what you mean about SC and real life, though I'm pretty much the same both places.

natalie: That doesn't surprise me. :) You're a sweetheart like that!

Mamie: You got it! ((hugs Mamie)) - I can be free with hugs online (does that make me e-easy? :-D don't answer that)!

Eilan: I'm glad someone else feels the way I do about handshakes. :)

PT: It does seem that southerners are more open with affection, not that I've had much other experience to go by. I'm a southern gal too, but not as touchy-feely as most (and I don't mean that as an insult in any way!). ;-)

rww: You are right, although I think some people "put on" a lot more than others! (Wouldn't that get heavy after a while? :-D)

Sudden: I gathered as much. :) That's great that it's a relaxing experience for you!

I think my problem with a lot of hugs is that it feels like the other person did it 'cause they felt they had to, and not because they wanted to do it. Blech - in that case, I'd rather not get one.

Expendable: To each his own, I suppose - though I bet there are some people who could draw you out/wouldn't be intimidated. :)

gee how do I miss all the fun!  I was on here yesterday, I really was...now look its 20 hours later!!  anyway, I have met people in person that I have met in a chat room.  They both were very nice people and we stayed in touch for the longest time.  This is a bit different, but I think I may like to meet a couple people here.  Not much of a hug person, more in general a hello, nice to meet you person..no hand shake just a greeting.  handshakes are dumb, and hugs are too personal.  my 2 cents..late but here!  :)

waking: I hope you have long arms - this place is filling up with great people (most of whom, it would seem, would be quite happy to receive your hug)! :)

Sudden: I have no doubt that you make people feel comfortable like that. A lot of it does depend on the intent behind the hug, and if your embrace is relaxing for you, it probably has the same effect on others. :)

quiet: You're never too late to comment on a post of mine. (And score another for the "Ew, handshakes" crew!)

g-wolf (I like that!): You crack me up, too, and you've no idea how much I needed that this morning! Thanks! :)

ed: I'm so not surprised you're a hugger. :-D Some people occasionally have almost the same effect with words, and for them I'm quite happy to be in huggee territory. :)

Zayda: I bet you and LG would have an absolute blast shoe shopping (you'd have to post pictures of your loot, of course)! :)

As always, I am late again with this one - take it as the different time zone's fault.
If I'd meet anyone from up here.. Gee, I would be embaressed for sure. I don't know about other people, but to me SC started as a therapy. I came up here to write out my thoughts, and as you read my blogs, you can see exactly who I was at the time I wrote them (I'm here over a year now), what were the things that effected me or bothered me, and how I felt deep inside. I some times take time to re-read my blogs from the very beginning just for the sake of nostalgy, and it makes me smile and cry. My blogs do mean a lot to me. The are the only real me.
Haivng said that, meeting any of your guys I would feel like standing in front of a class nacked. Especially after this summer's spicy hot action filled blogs.
I started them thinking no one I know reads them, now I know that I do have people who actually know much more about me than my mom would, if she'd been still alive (may she rest in peace). Also, I used blogging selfishly lately. I gave my blog to people I WANTED to read me, so they "get the messege". There are things I am unable to say, but when I write them down the words come out just as sharp and streight as I know I would want them to hear, but cannot say out loud.

So let's see.. if it's someone I'm not that actively in touch with, I'd be much cooler, and see how open he/she is. I'd probably offer my hand, hoping that it'll be as natural as possible. I'd smile and try to not stare at his big nose, or the pimple on the middle of his forth head, maybe imagining him in my PC's monitor or something.

But if he'she is someone I know was reading my blogs, maybe even commenting too........
    Oh, no.
I'd be red as a tomato, smile and laugh akwardly, and couldn't even look into hes'her eyes. I would be released to get a hug and a smile just so I know, it is OK, I am still all right to be friends with.

I'm not cold but not touchy-feely by nature unless I know the person well.  I only want to be touched by those I trust.  I am adamant about that.  But, you asked about the people here - if I talk to them with any regularity and I met them in person, I'd hug them without a moments notice.  It lends to a deeper friendship/connection.  If I've shared a deeper side to myself, I can certainly share a real hug.  There are a few I'd probably hug and cry too!  I'm a sap.
