I love to work with wood.  I got the bug from my father.  While helping him set up a craft business I had booked his first craft shows.  The night before the first one, Dad was helping me rip some slats for a basket I was determined to finish and take along.

I only needed five slats cut.  When he started the saw, I was walking by.  I turned it back off and said, "I made you a push stick - USE IT DAD!"  Less than five minutes later, without the push stick I had made him, Dad cut three of his fingers off on the last piece.

I wish we had one of these saws then.

Yes Ed they did.  However, he had to have the index finger operated on several times.  They put five pins in five different directions before they were done.  Although the finger looked okay, the pain was always there, never seeming to dull any.  It made him miserable.

It was a prelude to what was to come.  We were putting a roof on his home a year later.  Dad had heart problems and would become very emotional, which is typical of bypass patients.  He was not at all satisfied with the way I had lined up the tiles on his 80 year old roof.  He yelled and carried on so that it was more than I could bear.  So, I finished the main section while he was at work one day by getting volunteers.

Unhappy with it, he decided to roof the front porch himself.  No amount of lecturing or complaining would get him off that roof.  It took him three days to complete.  I have to admit that it did look good.

At the close of that last day, I came in off the road and found him half crawling from the shower to his room with nothing but his briefs on.  I screamed at him to stop.   Most of his lower left leg was black.  We immediately took him to the hospital where his heart surgeon practiced.

The next day, we learned that most bypass patients loose the left leg within 9 years.  It had been 14 since Dad had that vein removed to fix his heart.  You see there is little circulation in that leg after the main artery is removed.  Even resting your left leg with the edge of an ottoman against any part of it will kill the leg from that point down.  Dad had been on his knees for four days.

I knew, when they came to say they did not know if they could save it, what his response would be.  He looked at me then and I knew.  "Cut the Bugger OFF!  TODAY!"  Dad said.  They did.  He never regretted it.

Ed make sure that you FIL knows that not even the ankles can be crossed!  Also, it is best to sit in a manner where no part of the left leg touches anything, if at all possible.

I have a friend that sits with a box under her left foot so she does not restrict the blood flow in her left leg at all.
