Are you interested in yet another personality-type test? Well, I just took one myself, and confirmed that I have multiple personalities. And I betcha most of us will also make the same discovery.

Visiting moonstone's first blog, my interest was drawn to lfbno7's comment that discussed about Riso and Hudson's 9 basic personality types, which are reminiscent of the 12 zodiac personalities but which also appear to have a more scientific basis.

I can't elaborate on their concept of enneagrams. But they have a whole website that explains about the system, and a complete battery of tests (RHETI) that are supposed to let you find out which among the 9 personality types you belong to.

Here are the 9 personality types, as explained in their website:

=====

Type One. The Reformer
The principled, idealistic type. Ones are conscientious and ethical, with a strong sense of right and wrong. They are teachers, crusaders, and advocates for change: always striving to improve things, but afraid of making a mistake. Well-organized, orderly, and fastidious, they try to maintain high standards, but can slip into being critical and perfectionistic. They typically have problems with resentment and impatience. At their Best: wise, discerning, realistic, and noble. Can be morally heroic.

Type Two. The Helper
The caring, interpersonal type. Twos are empathetic, sincere, and warm-hearted. They are friendly, generous, and self-sacrificing, but can also be sentimental, flattering, and people-pleasing. They are well-meaning and driven to be close to others, but can slip into doing things for others in order to be needed. They typically have problems with possessiveness and with acknowledging their own needs. At their Best: unselfish and altruistic, they have unconditional love for others.

Type Three. The Achiever
The adaptable, success-oriented type. Threes are self-assured, attractive, and charming. Ambitious, competent, and energetic, they can also be status-conscious and highly driven for advancement. They are diplomatic and poised, but can also be overly concerned with their image and what others think of them. They typically have problems with workaholism and competitiveness. At their Best:: self-accepting, authentic, everything they seem to be—role models who inspire others.

Type Four. The Individualist
The introspective, romantic type. Fours are self-aware, sensitive, and reserved. They are emotionally honest, creative, and personal, but can also be moody and self-conscious. Withholding themselves from others due to feeling vulnerable and defective, they can also feel disdainful and exempt from ordinary ways of living. They typically have problems with melancholy, self-indulgence, and self-pity. At their Best: inspired and highly creative, they are able to renew themselves and transform their experiences.

Type Five. The Investigator
The perceptive, cerebral type. Fives are alert, insightful, and curious. They are able to concentrate and focus on developing complex ideas and skills. Independent, innovative, and inventive, they can also become preoccupied with their thoughts and imaginary constructs. They become detached, yet high-strung and intense. They typically have problems with eccentricity, nihilism, and isolation. At their Best: visionary pioneers, often ahead of their time, and able to see the world in an entirely new way.

Type Six. The Loyalist
The committed, security-oriented type. Sixes are reliable, hard-working, responsible, and trustworthy. Excellent "troubleshooters," they foresee problems and foster cooperation, but can also become defensive, evasive, and anxious—running on stress while complaining about it. They can be cautious and indecisive, but also reactive, defiant and rebellious. They typically have problems with self-doubt and suspicion. At their Best: internally stable and self-reliant, courageously championing themselves and others.

Type Seven. The Enthusiast
The busy, productive type. Sevens are extroverted, optimistic, versatile, and spontaneous. Playful, high-spirited, and practical, they can also misapply their many talents, becoming over-extended, scattered, and undisciplined. They constantly seek new and exciting experiences, but can become distracted and exhausted by staying on the go. They typically have problems with impatience and impulsiveness. At their Best: they focus their talents on worthwhile goals, becoming appreciative, joyous, and satisfied.

Type Eight. The Challenger
The powerful, aggressive type. Eights are self-confident, strong, and assertive. Protective, resourceful, straight-talking, and decisive, but can also be ego-centric and domineering. Eights feel they must control their environment, especially people, sometimes becoming confrontational and intimidating. Eights typically have problems with their tempers and with allowing themselves to be vulnerable. At their Best: self-mastering, they use their strength to improve others' lives, becoming heroic, magnanimous, and inspiring.

Type Nine. The Peacemaker
The easy-going, self-effacing type. Nines are accepting, trusting, and stable. They are usually creative, optimistic, and supportive, but can also be too willing to go along with others to keep the peace. They want everything to go smoothly and be without conflict, but they can also tend to be complacent, simplifying problems and minimizing anything upsetting. They typically have problems with inertia and stubbornness. At their Best: indomitable and all-embracing, they are able to bring people together and heal conflicts.

There is a free RHETI test at their website. Click here to take the test. Normally, I don't blog about these things. But here and now I take an exception. Why? Duh. Maybe because I want to clear my mind and review some assumptions for some important decisions I need to make? I dunno, really. Just take the test and share the results here, will ya?

my scores on the nine types, ranked from highest to lowest, were:

    Type 5 - 7 - the investigator
    Type 9 - 7 - the peacemaker
    Type 1 - 6 - the loyalist
    Type 3 - 5
    Type 4 - 4
    Type 6 - 3
    Type 2 - 2
    Type 7 - 1
    Type 8 - 1

this is more proof of my multiple personalities; it shows that i have at least three dominant (and often conflicting) personalities, perhaps more.

    Type 2 - 7
    Type 7 - 6
    Type 9 - 6
    Type 6 - 5
    Type 4 - 4
    Type 1 - 3
    Type 5 - 3
    Type 8 - 1
    Type 3 - 1

Type 2 is pretty accurate I'd say.  Kind of an interesting test.  I was very tempted to pay ten bucks to take the whole test.  Only thing is I'd probably find out how truly dysfunctional I am. :D

miss mimi -- a helper who's also secondarily a peacemaker is such a soothing personality. i tend to agree... paying ten bucks to do an online test will only worsen my lunacy...lol.

first, a quickie lecture: my own approach is to focus on personality types where you get a score of 5 or higher. those for which you get a score of 4 or below merely represent transient or latent factors, which we all have because of common culture and civilization.

why do i set the cut-off score at 5? to put it simply: there are 36 questions and 9 personality types. a truly flat and featureless person -- no such thing -- would have the absolute average score of 4 per type. hence, s/he becomes rounded only with a score of 5 or higher. (did that make any sense...? lol)

oooh, why must i take the fun out of this post with voodoo statistics ...:-)

beyond and quietone -- you are clearly individualists, with beyond having a strong streak as a peacemaker-investigator (like me), and quietone as helper-investigator. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

ginger -- you are an enthusiast-challenger, no doubt about it...:-). but i think the "4" there refers to your score on three personality types, not as individualist. you scored only a 3 on "individualist". although having a "4" on reformer, investigator and peacemaker probably means you can easily click with other people exhibiting them. i see your uniqueness in this... ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

secret -- you are an outstanding helper, with a strong streak as enthusiast-challenger, like ginger. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

creative -- you're clearly a peacemaker, with a strong streak as loyalist-helper. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

going back to missmimi -- clearly a helper (like secret), with a strong streak as enthusiast-peacemaker-investigator. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

infernal -- your dossier doesn't provide the necessary data, and my spreadsheet can't compute. tentatively, i will have to take your word for it. dominantly helper-peacemaker, with a streak of loyalist-individualist. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel))

back to imladris -- no data too, so tentatively you are peacemaker-loyalist. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel))

all respondents may invoke a 15-day appeal period, after which a final judgment is to be made by this tribunal.

((magistrate moonriver slams gavel, declares a short recess for a snack of tea and biscuits while he reads the latest issue of werewolf monthly...))

  • lfbno7 said on Aug 15, 2007....
I'm a Type 1.  Some of the names given to 1 are the perfectionist and the reformer, but my own favorite name for the type is the judge.

We're called perfectionists because we're good proofreaders, good at spotting typos, and we take care to do things right, though in my line of work I'm making mistakes all the time and so is everyone else.  We're always trying to make things better, more perfect, more efficient.

We're called reformers because a lot of us are politically minded, and are on the side of reform, complaining about what we see as wrong.  Noam Chomsky and Jane Fonda are well known "reformer" 1s.  Chomsky writes very intense books criticizing the way our country does things, and Fonda is famous for her stand against the Vietnam War.  Ralph Nader is another famous reformer 1, whether you call it complaining, perfecting, reforming, bitching, whatever.

I call my type the judge because a great motto for my type would be the line "I'll be the judge of that!"  We're so sure we're right, and willing to take on the whole world about it, and usually do.

When you meet a 1 in person, you find that the person is usually a little distant, a little dignified just in the sense that he won't be roaring drunk with a lampshade on his head making a spectacle of himself.  Not a life of the party type.  Usually a reserved personality.  A controlled person.

Here's the type of person who makes sure he locked the door, who likes to have exact change in his hand for the bus that will arrive in ten minutes.  A careful, thorough person.

One of my favorite things about 1s is when they go completely against everyone in their peer group.  I always get a kick out of that.  William Buckley is a great example.  You see his distance, his dignity, his blandness, all typical of 1.  You see how smart the guy is, also typical of 1.  But the thing I like is when this conservative Republican leader comes out with something out of left field, totally against his own party, because he is taking a moral position and doesn't give a damn what anybody thinks, including his own people.  That's Type 1 all over.

As a conservative Republican, Buckley came out strongly and loudly in favor of legalizing marijuana, back when nobody but the hippies were saying that.  To get some idea of how odd that was at the time, imagine G.W. Bush doing it now, not for medicinal purposes, but for recreational purposes.  Buckley was saying it should be legal for recreational purposes.  Obviously he took it, liked it, and thought what the hell is this illegal for?  And he had no hesitation to broadcast his opinion to the world, not giving a damn how his buddies received his comments.

Another great little Buckleyism, so typical of 1, is when his Republicans were so happy about impeaching Clinton that they were having multiple orgasms just talking about it, and here comes Republican bigwig Buckley making fun of them all, saying that nearly everyone in Congress was guilty of lying under oath when they swore to vote on Clinton's impeachment in a nonpartisan manner, and then proceeded to vote nearly 100% in a partisan manner.

Type 1 can be seen as treasonous.  They go against their own tribe.  Like Buckley going against his fellow Republicans on the issue of impeaching Clinton or legalizing marijuana.  Like Jane Fonda going against her country by posing with the enemy and fraternizing with them.  Like Noam Chomsky endlessly criticizing what America does around the world.  Like founding father John Adams defending the British soldiers in the Boston Massacre because he believed they were acting in self defense, and getting most of them acquitted.

Type 1 doesn't follow the tribe.  Type 1 looks to a higher authority, the almighty RIGHT.  That's why I call them the judge.  I'm not saying they are always right.  You'll get two of them arguing with each other about what's right.  I'm saying they aren't tribal.  They want to know what is right, not what their peer group says is right.

One of the drawbacks of my type is that we may come on too strong with our opinions since we KNOW we're right and the rest of the world is stupid.  It's a very Type 1 thing.

When you come across a bland personality with strong opinions, suspect 1.  Look at Al Gore.  Look at Ralph Nader.  Look at Kevorkian.

Joan Baez is a great example of the type.  Type 1 girls aren't selling sex.  Britney Spears isn't a 1.  They have an opinion and they have a distance about them.  Joan Baez did so many songs that had a political nature.  She'd support the rights of the downtrodden in her folk songs.  She wouldn't seem like the kind of chick you'd pick up at a bar.  She'd engage you intellectually or politically.

The worst examples of my type are the people who demand that you follow what they say.  They know how to live, you don't, and you must do as they say.  The more they mind other people's business, the more likely they are hypocrites.  Like your Moral Majority person, telling you how to live, railing against abortion or whatever, and then secretly not coming anywhere near living up to their own standards of anything.

The best examples of my type are the live and let live people who don't cram their way of life down anyone's throat.  They still have their strong opinions but they don't tell others how to live their lives, too much.

Okay, one of my points here is that there are 9 distinct personality types in the enneagram and it isn't meant as a "I'm kinda like a 2 but kinda like a 9."  The only way to know which one you are is to get deeper into it, but the types are very different from each other, and you would have to know more about them to figure out which you are.

The fact is, we are all kinda like all nine types, but there is one type that is your basic type, as if when you were born that number was stamped on your forehead to remain unchanged all your life.  The deeper you get in the enneagram the more you realize that everyone has one basic type, and it starts to mean a lot.

You also have a "wing", one of the adjacent numbers, your secondary type.  You may be outgoing and friendly and score high in both 2 and 7, but that doesn't mean that you are a 2 with a 7 wing, or the opposite.  There's no such thing.  The numbers aren't adjacent.  If you are a 2, your wing is either 1 or 3.  If you are a 7, your wing is either 6 or 8.  You find that Type 2 and Type 7 are very very different from each other, and the only thing they have in common is that they're both outgoing.  Other than that, two completely different readings.  You are one or the other, not both.

It's hard to peg it down by one little test.  I'm a 1 with a 9 wing.  You can think of it this way.  More than half my personality is 1.  Less than half my personality is 9.  The other types don't touch me all that much.

Then they talk about your integration and disintegration, but don't get too carried away by all that.  It's just a little fact on the side that when a 1 is at his best, he starts acting like a healthy 7, and when a 1 is all stressed out he starts acting like an unhealthy 4.  It's part of the reading.  Each type, at its best, starts being like one specific other type, and at its worst starts being like another specific type.  I only mention it because you'll read it somewhere and start to think it is more important than it really is.

For example, a friendly, happy, outgoing Type 2 (think Dolly Parton or John Denver), when stressed out, becomes a real toughie, far moreso than you would imagine.  You wouldn't want to get Dolly Parton really pissed off at you.  It seems so out of character, because Type 2 is soooo friendly and harmless, but when they are cornered they get very tough.  The enneagram way of saying that is that the direction of disintegration for Type 2 is that they become unhealthy 8s.  You do not want to mess with an unhealthy 8.  So if you drive a 2 crazy you will then have to deal with an unhealthy and pissed off 8.  It's not a good thing.  People are irrational when they are stuck in their "disintegration".  By definition, it is when they are at their most screwed up, all stressed out and out of control.

It's kind of a drag that you have to practically have a doctorate in this subject in order to get a lot out of it.  But isn't that the way everything works.  So it isn't about noticing that you scored high in 2 and 9 meaning that you are a helper and a peacemaker.  Nope.  That's not it.  You're one or the other, and your wing can't be the other because it is not adjacent.  A 2 can only have a wing of 1 or 3.  A 9 can only have a wing of 8 or 1.

Also, the more you get into it, the less you use the descriptive phrases and the more you use the numbers, because the descriptive phrases change from one book to the next.  Type 4 may be called the individualist or the romantic.  Type 8 may be called the confronter or the boss or the challenger or whatever.  I call Type 8 the Tyrannosaurus Rex, or T-Rex for short.  But you just call it 8 and everybody knows which type you're talking about.

the court takes cognizance of witness lfbno7 as Type One (reformer or perfectionist) and instructs clerk of court to incorporate his expert testimony into the proceedings.

court appreciates very detailed explanation about the exactness of enneagram measurements, but is aware that other scientists dispute its concept of linearity and either-or exclusivity, and emphasize three-dimensional spectrum and dynamic structure. real-life spectrography of stellar matter does not show simple linearity and exclusivity in the definition of spectral lines. since individual personalities are at least as complex as stellar processes, court will continue to abide by the results of the RHETI free sample test until a more comprehensive test is made available freely to the general public. in the meantime, witness lfbno7 may continue his testimony.

rightwing -- you are definitely an investigator, with a strong streak of reformer and peacemaker. the court notes that the respondent considers himself as having a multi-faceted personality, not multiple personalities.

indeed, this issue as applied in general is beyond this humble court's jurisdiction. but if individuals voluntarily submit to the standard tests, then of course this court can issue a ruling. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

infernal -- court appreciates prompt action by respondent, and is pleasantly surprised that the data totally supports her contention. earlier ruling is sustained. the respondent is now deemed by this court as definitely a peacemaker-helper, with a strong streak as individualist-loyalist. go forth and help keep the peace. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

suddenrain -- you are a helper-challenger with a streak of individualist-enthusiast. another unique combination, which might partially explain why you are confused. but don't worry. all multiple personalities suffer varying degrees of it. consider yourself lucky because then you can easily shift from one to the other to soothe your friends and confound your rivals. ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

lioness -- you're a helper-peacemaker like infernal, with a streak as achiever-loyalist. still another unique combination. go forth and help keep the peace. god knows we need more people like you.

ok, enough of storms, floods, earthquakes and war shock. court's back in session, let's get this sh*t over and done with.

faulty-perfection -- court apologizes for delayed ruling in your case. mea culpa. (werewolf monthly editors should instruct their centerfold cuties to pose more demurely in future issues.) you are hereby deemed by this court as a bona fide achiever.

petite papillon -- court likewise apologizes for delayed ruling in your case. mea maxima culpa. you are hereby deemed by this court as a bona fide peacemaker, with a strong streak as loyalist-individualist.

kruu -- court likewise apologizes for delayed ruling in your case. mea ultima maxima culpa. you are hereby deemed by this court as a bona fide individualist.

imladris -- court appreciates action by respondent, and is glad that the data totally supports her contention. earlier ruling is sustained. the respondent is now deemed by this court as definitely a peacemaker, with a strong streak as loyalist.

wombat -- court suggests go take that test...now!

mirrorimage -- you are hereby deemed by this court as an honest-to-goodness peacemaker, with a streak of enthusiast-helper.

memyself -- you are hereby deemed by this court as an honest-to-goodness helper, with a streak of enthusiast.

calyptic -- ((magistrate moonriver doffs wig, takes a low bow as sign of deep respect for young rebel poet)) you are hereby deemed by this court as an honest-to-goodness peacemaker-enthusiast, with a streak of helper-achiever.

lucky13 -- ((magistrate moonriver suppresses a laughing fit, throws wig at respondent)) respondent is deemed by this court as a certified lunatic stooge and a low-flying angel, and is hereby ordered to practice his calling with a lot more verve and elan than he has displayed so far.

destiny -- you are hereby deemed by this court as an authentic helper, with a streak of incredibly moody at times.

whatcouldbe -- you are hereby deemed by this court as an authentic individualist-enthusiast, with a streak of achiever.

difficult-soul -- you are hereby deemed by this court as a genuinely difficult soul.

suddenrain -- respondent would like mistrial proceedings to continue? court is amenable to submitting to a writ of certiorari from another court with superior jurisdiction. may i suggest the court of magistrate lucky13...

((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with utter finality and with such impact on the noggin of all respondents who attended the proceedings. then he climbs onto the desk, looks at the startled audience with wild eyes, and shouts, "peter weiss, didya see that? huh? huh? marat/sade has just been redefined..."))

I am forced therfore to enter for your immediate consideration a motion that you recuse yourself from further consideration of the matter before this court forthwith.

Further I have a submitted this matter to the Board of Judicial Review for their consideration of your fittness for further service.

I also petition the court to set aside all decisions and rulings previously made in this and related matters.

magistrate rww, i will have you know that i jumped the gun on your motion, explained my side to the bjr ... they all nodded with a knowing look when i explained about the centerfold cuties distracting my judgment, and showed them the offending cutie with the very undemure pose... and i'm happy to say the bjr cleared me of any misbehavior and confirmed me fit for further service.

suddenrain -- one more funny face like that from you, mi señora, and i'll have you cited for unconscionable cuteness.

*ginger bends over magistrate Moonriver handing him the papers but, inadvertently, her blouse (so strecthed) opens showing for a very brief moment her white laced bra. She quickly recompones herself *

"Sorry, my fault"...... she whispers ...oh so innocently..........:-).

JLLnLLH -- respondent is hereby deemed an enthusiast, with an interesting nick that is pure startrek. but we all have to live with the names we give ourselves, don't we? ((magistrate moonriver slams gavel with finality))

pontius -- respondent may adopt more personalities as he sees fit. the test just makes it sound official...lol.

ginger -- ((magistrate moonriver quickly clutches breast...*his breast not hers* you dirty-minded readers you...)) omg omg... i think my heart just leap-frogged to the 3rd floor... i think my vena cava has collapsed all the way through my right atrium...

((clears throat, pulls eyes away from enticing vision, tries to regain composure))

respondent ginger. what can i do you for? i mean, what can i do to you? shoot, wrong again, i'm so flustered.... what can i do for you? oh... your papers.

    My 2 highest are

    THE ACHIEVER
  • Basic Fear: Of being worthless
  • Basic Desire: To feel valuable and worthwhile

and

THE CHALLENGER
  • Basic Fear: Of being harmed or controlled by others
  • Basic Desire: To protect themselves (to be in control of their own life
        and destiny)
  • moonriver said on Aug 29, 2007....
suddenrain -- i bet you were smiling from ear to ear when you said that... :-)

gypsyheart -- no inconsistency there. my multiple personalities comprise my internal board of trustees too. i hate it when they hold meetings and debate loudly way deep into the night,  when i'm trying to get some sleep, and they go wake me up and ask me for bottomless mugs of coffee. thanks for dropping by. oh btw, your blog name is fantastic... :-)

wired-kitty -- sorry ma'am, the magistrate has gone fishin' for the week, and i'm just the cleaning boy hereabouts. but i reckon he'll let me play judge and slam the gavel this time. court deems you achiever and challenger. here ma'am, have a tall cool glass of lemonade before ya go huntin' goals to achieve and problems to challenge... :-)

I need help.. I am paralyzed through illness to achieve anything more then going to the bathroom, typing on this computer, puking, folding over in pain, spazing out, etc..

therefore, a job is out and all goals are out.

Now, I can achieve goals in my brain.. I know,, that's weird.

Does anyone have any idea how to raise my self esteem self worth substantially.

Everyone around me attacks me verbally often. They are frustrated about my diesease, which is incurable by the way, for 100's of years it has been that way and I'm all of a sudden supposed to take their advice and be better immediately,

anyways, after 1 year of this and losing my job, my respect for myself is gone, my dependability is gone, etc..

Help me pump myself up,, I need ideas. I can not work out, I can no body sculp, I can barely eat right without pain. Migraine headaches should I chose the food my voice does not want me to eat.. Yes ,, I'm on the other side of sanity.. but I still need you to answer me.

    Please help.. send me ideas.
