jeez...there are actually a few options here...

from a stranger: "are you a fencer?"

sappy: the mrs saying yes when i asked her to marry me.

otherwise: let me think about that for a bit. :>

hmmm... i think the best i have heared anyone said to compliment was.... " You have such  sweet daughter... takes after you!" and " You  have remained the sweet affectionate despite the difficulties you have been through"
  • Alyss said on Aug 13, 2007....
Last week I was told I am exceptional which I thought was a great compliment until it was followed up with 'exceptionally stupid'. =(
  • rupert7 said on Aug 13, 2007....
A Japanese lady I know calls me a pussy cat. Is that a compliment???

I did her sister a small favor and she said "rot (what) a man". That sounds a bit more like a compliment!

Susie & Jenny both married me, something not too many women would undertake, that must be some sort of compliment!

Biggest compliment came from my friend who died. She said nobody had ever cared for her the way I did, that I was her angel.

I will say something in all sincerity & people often say 'you are so funny'.....I'm not exactly sure how to take that.............
I like being told 'you are so thoughtful' or '...so kind'
Someone once said 'you are so talented' & I really liked that.
Once in a while, I do something good to my appearance & have been told you look so pretty, but it's been a loooong time since someone has said you are so hot...
  • quietone said on Aug 13, 2007....

I have been told:  you are so clever, you are so talented, you are so thoughtful.  and here, I thought it quite a compliment when one SCer said I reminded her of her grandmother that was very nice concidering she has never met me, only read me.  :)

Before I tell mine - please don't think I'm being vain or bragging by repeating these.  It is just what has stood out in my life.  The biggest point I get out of what was said about me was not whether the things were true or not but they made me feel good about myself.

I have some that stand out this early in the morning.   The first one came from my ex-hubby a long time ago - he said I didn't need makeup because I didn't look different without it.  (I know it's kinda weak but I got the meaning of it and he didn't hand out compliments often).  The next one is from a friend of mine.  She said I had the best heart of anyone she knew.  And my Sweety always bends down in church and whispers that he has looked all over the room and cannot find a woman any more beautiful than me.  I love that he tells me that.

I'm a big believer in compliments and building others up.

  • the_infernal_optimist said on Aug 13, 2007....
Hmm...you can really tell a lot about someone by what people select here!

I think having someone else (particularly a new baby in your arms) fall asleep in your presence is about the greatest compliment you could receive from them, because it's such a gesture of trust and says that they find your presence comfortable/don't have to be on guard around you.

As far as something someone actually said, I'm not sure...if I think of anything specific, I'll come back. :)

CW.....like Fearing i hope i dont sound vain or a shallow brag. I received many compliments in my life.

But I tell you just some of the cuter ones.

My ex husband once told me i was like a Ferrari when i was making love and he loved to drive me because my body had more curve that an Italian country road.

My friend once told me i was her little personal wings, her home shoes, her personal reserve of laughter and strenght.

A lover told me he couldn't wait to see me when i was going to be 50. "You are better than wine" he said.

The best compliment anyway are the ones from my daughter. She recently told me "You look so confident, mom, how can i be like you?".

Well, how can you beat that?

  • CreativeWoman said on Aug 13, 2007....
    Ed,
That's so romantic about your wife saying "yes".  Your are a fencer, aren't you?  I can see where that would have been a very flattering compliment.  :-)

    Mimi,
You are a wonderful lady.  Shame on those around you for not giving you compliments.

    sweet cookie,
Those are wonderful compliments.  It sounds like you are a great example to your daughter and people are noticing.  :-)

    Alyss,
You are most certainly NOT exceptionally stupid!  You are quite the contrary.  :-)

    rupert,
It sounds like you are a sweeter person than you give yourself credit for.  :-)

    jadestar,
You sound like a very beautiful and nice person.  :-)

    quietone,
That was a sweet compliment to get.  :-)

    fearing,
Your Sweety is a keeper.  That is so very romantic.  I'm sure he means it too!

    Infernal,
That is a sweet comment about babies.  :-)

    ginger,
You've received some wonderful compliments from the men in your life.  :-)   You must be very proud of your daughter.

Other than my kids calling me "the best mom ever" I think the compliment that sticks with me the most is a nic name that I was given by someone I worked out with on the mat.  He called me a "bad ass feather".  It appealed to me because it acknowledges my skills and my appearance.

I had someone once tell me that I changed their life. That was a pretty touching compliment, even if I still don't think I deserved it.
  • polarheart said on Aug 13, 2007....
I have been told that I am so helpful. . .I like that.

I also have been told that I am wise (in a good way). . .that is a BIGGY for me as I dont think that of myself, I just try to learn from my life experiences.
  • ZsuzsiO said on Aug 13, 2007....
I am getting a lot that "I am the sexiest women in their lives". I don't really believe I am, but I by now I kind of know I am sexy and it is no longer a compliment, more than stating a fact. A fact that I love to be able to use to benefit me when I need it, but I am so tired of being the sexy girl, and not something deeper, and more meaningful.
The last guy I've dated back in FL, Papi, was a helpless thug, and he used to call me his guardian angel. He always looked up to me and told me that I got it together and I am standing strong no matter what, and I make him feel that he could have a better life too. Now that is a compliment.
When I was about 19 and had a roomate, he almost raped me ones, and when I was fighting him he started to cry that I make him go crazy even when I am not in the apartment he can still smell my scent, and he can't help it - so one of us gonna have to move out, because he just cannot promise he will be able to stop himself next time. I was surprised, cause I never knew he had feeling like that, but I think I surprised him too - he didn't know I am kind of a nimfo, and that this act pushed all the right buttons. We've had wild sex, sometimes 5-6 times a day, untill I fell in love with the guy who turned out to be my husband (now ex). I never loved this guy, so leaving him was easy as 2+2, but I've never had such a sexual connection with anyone else. Still makes me smile.....
Than there was my ex husband who loved my cooking so much he used to call me "safta Zsuzsi", which means Grandma' Zsuzsi (Zsuzsi is my name). He said my food was so good that it's better than his own mother's. It's like going to safta's house and being spoiled by the best home made foods. He said my children and grandchildren will be so lucky to have me, because I am like a little safta.

But the best compliments came from a long distance friend whom I meet only by writting. She is the strongest woman I could think of, and I've always looked up to her knowing I could never deal with her life. Yet ever since she knows me she tells me she is the one looking up to me, I am the one who she things is the stronger, and that she wishes to be more like I am. But the real compliment came this summer, when after 8 years we could finally meet. I didn't have much time in Hungary, so I had to meet her along with my childhood friend and her family in the zoo. Fortunaltelly, we all had a wonderfull time, and desite how different we all grown to become, we all got along well. But when she left she looked at me with tears in her eyes, and thanked me that I dared to claim her as my friend so openly in front of all these nice people. She felt that she is so much less than my friend and I that I shouldn't have to show up with someone like her on my side, and that she is honored by the friednship I am showing to her.
Now no man could ever top that, I think.

  • secretlife said on Aug 13, 2007....
i'm not very good at receiving compliments, so alot of the time i let them go in one ear and out the other one very quickly.
but i remember one once that was given to me by a lover when i was in the shower.  i was feeling very sensual and bent over to pick up the bar of soap.
he was quite a bit older than i was, and said.....God you look so beautiful like that.  I wish I were 20 years younger.  i believed him.
  • rightwingwizard said on Aug 13, 2007....
I don't know about 'best', but the most memorable was when I had taken it upon myself to do a project my father had been intending to do but was having difficulty getting to.  It was an all day job, and when he got home from work he went out to inspect my work (surprised that I had done it at all).  After making a couple perfunctory adjustments he grinned at me and said "Well, I suppose that will do for now!"

From him that was a compliment.

Also-I can't help but add... My hubby often says, (when I am quick with a comeback)   "Smartass.."  I just smile.....

Most of the time, I don't believe in compliments but i always say "thank you" whether the compliments were sincere or not.

The best kind of compliments are those that are not said. My former girlfriend (my first) used to kiss the best parts she liked on my face each time I walked her home. She kissed my forehead, my eyes, my cheeks, my nose, and my lips. That almost covers most of my face but then just before I leave. She would give me a butterfly kiss  which gave me shivers because she had long and sexy eyelashes.

She never told me why she would leave that kiss out until the moment I turn around to leave until about a year into our relationship.

She said it was a kiss for my heart and soul that if she dies first, I'll still feel her kiss each time I feel a shiver up my spine.

That was absurdly sweet. I believe her.

Best recent compliment was just a few moments ago on the phone with my sweetie: "You're really something special...where have you been all my life?"

(I know it's a bit of a cliche, but the sincere tone in his voice made all the difference)

Most memorable compliment came from a classmate in college when she told me that I had lips that "most women would get plastic surgery to have". I've thought they were my best feature ever since!

  • CreativeWoman said on Aug 15, 2007....

    wakingharmony & CW,

What makes THOSE butterfly kisses even more special was that for a girl, she wasn't very expressive and vocal. I used to write her spontaneous poems on tissue papers or get overly romantic and whisper to her those poems while we were in a crowd-- and all that I get was a lousy "thank you" and her great smile. I'd sigh in disbelief how she could be so cold or perhaps just too bland.

But when she gave me those butterfly kisses, all my disappointments vanish and I'd walk home smiling like a junkie who had his fix! :D

Yes. It does make me smile-- BIG TIME! :D

And cry on cold nights when a gust of wind sends chills up my spine. :'(

I've had so many, and I am truelly not bragging, just trying to think of the best one I've recieved. A total stranger once said to me that I was like a rose in the desert.

Another was...I looked perfect enough to be in Playboy. I'm still trying to figure out if that should be taken as a compliment, but at the time, and the way it was said, I felt it was. It's hard to decide which is the best because when someone takes the time to actually think and say the words, I feel the thought and the feeling that went into them even thinking and then saying it is actually the biggest compliment to me. LoL...did that make sense?
