Have you ever witnessed the execution of royalty in real life? I have, many times. In fact, I have had the honor of serving as the executioner quite a few times. Last weekend, I made sure to take pictures to show you how we do it in this side of the world.

The royal victim isn't a person. It's one of the two maturing banana fruit bunches that I had selected for a quick harvest, before a possible strong storm came in. I consider the banana as the king of tropical fruits, thus the reference to royalty.

I should clarify that after a banana "tree" (the trunk is not woody, it's actually an overgrown soft-plant stalk) bears a single bunch of fruits, it starts to dry up and die. After the maturing bunch is harvested, what a farmer does is to cut down the useless trunk, and thus give way for small adjacent suckers to grow into a new banana "tree."

Thus, the axiom "The king is dead, long live the king" applies to banana trees as well.

Image 1. The executioner sharpens the death weapon -- a southern Chinese peasant's
scythe -- on a whetstone.

banana01

Image 2. The death scythe is not sharp enough for a human neck, but it will do for a banana neck. Note the mean-looking executioner's boots.

banana02

Image 3. The executioner starts his trek to the execution site. It is a foggy morning. The bamboo shoots sway in a mournful way.

banana03

Image 4. The executioner reaches the banana grove. The doomed banana bunch is selected. The fog starts to lift.

banana04

Image 5. Allowing himself a touch of poetry, the executioner lets his death scythe -- now fixed onto a sturdy wooden pole -- caress the doomed banana torso one last time. The metal glint is in sharp contrast with the soft gentle green of mature sheaths and a nearby young shoot.

banana05

Image 6. The executioner climbs the ladder and positions the death blade firmly on the slightly-yielding banana fruit stalk. The leaves tremble in fearful anticipation. He focuses his aim, raises the blade a meter away... and strikes a single, quick sharp blow.

banana06

Image 7. It's all over in a second. The banana bunch falls with a faint whimper to a soft pile of dried banana leaves, to avoid stratching the gentle fruit skin. Note the bloodied scythe. Banana sap bleeds off as a colorless liquid that soon turns sticky and tar-gray.

banana07

Image 8. The executioner proudly displays his trophy, leaning against an ancient mossy stonewall. Note the sticky sap on his hands. Banana executioner brays a terrible triumphant laughter that echoes across the silent foggy slopes.

banana08

Image 9. The executioner practices his craft with fastidious care and attention to detail. He uses a hand-broom made from mountain reeds to clean off the dirt from each "hand" on the bunch, then gets an exact weight. The scale shows exactly 14 kilos. It's a good harvest, a clean cut with no mess.

banana09

Image 10. The executioner is a bit of an artist. He carries the banana into a small bodega, places it on a cleaning tray, which in turn is placed on a clean quilted rag on the cement floor. The precise surgical butchering begins. He works quickly while there is still enough light.

banana10

Image 11. One last final shot. The butchering is complete. The banana "hands" will be placed in a rice storage bin, and expected to ripen within a week's time. Dwarf bamboo branches are there only for decoration, to celebrate the completed cycle of life.

The banana is dead. Long live the banana!

Moon! Thank you for the lesson in banana husbandry. Its only been the last few years that the type of banana you show here has been available in my part of the world. You make my mouth water for them. They re really delicious. Those dancing booties are might appealing. I may have to grab me a pair.
  • gingersoul said on Aug 11, 2007....

Moon.....oh, forget the bananas......i have been more interested in the royal hand of the royal executioner.

A long elegant thumb, strong fingers and that open palm crossed by all those life's lines........now, that is something to contemplate.

Bananas are so good to eat i dont feel any remorse in assisting to their decapitation.......would you world-deliver some of them to me? I

I know how to make a banana bread to die for....or better, to be decapitated for......:-D

Beyond bows to river-of-the-fu-moon and asks in his most noble voice "These pictures are worth a thousand bananas, Master, so how do I acquire the royal boots, cutting blade, and knowledge to harvest this delicious fruit from Albertsons? I must impress Lady Gingersoul quickly, lest she run off with an exotic man from the East."

muun:  Are those the giant, manly feet that you've alluded to so often in your posts?  I'm with ginger.  I found the executioner's hand far more intriguing than the "royal" hand.  Death to the banana!   Nice to see you exposing more of yourself.  (just don't overdo it...could be illegal in some places).  ;-)

Hmm...I don't find executions entertaining, since I am not a citizen of Saudi Arabia.  The British royalty has to pay taxes now and Harry got sent off to war.  They are more like celebrities.  They have little purpose and substance.

bah, bananas are not the royalty of tropical fruit--mangos are!

but great execution all the same. :>

Maybe next you can show us the art in "unclothing the banana"?  :-)
  • quietone said on Aug 11, 2007....
great picture story moon. are those the little short bananas?  Like the ones they have in mexico? I did not know the tree died after baring the fruit...interesting
  • moonriver said on Aug 11, 2007....
destiny -- of course i'm crazy. and i did warn you earlier...;-)

botoni -- globalization has its fringe benefits, i'll have to agree. they are not dancing boots...lol. they are rubberized work boots for construction workers. but i guess i can always dance in them, swaying with the bamboo leaf fronds.

  • moonriver said on Aug 11, 2007....
ginger -- i'm lucky that pic doesn't show the calloused palm and the pungent, almost sulfuric smell of banana sap. a banana execution isn't exactly a sexy sight... ;-)

but my left hand fascinates you? wait until you encounter my right hand. harvesting bananas isn't the only dexterity my hands have, ya know.

but in any case, i know you'll love my bananas. i will have to think of how to send you a sample. and i'm sure i'll fall in love with your banana cake too...;-)

  • moonriver said on Aug 11, 2007....
master moonriver replies to master beyond, as one taoist teacher to another: "we all choose our paths in life, and the gems that we pick along the way are with us forever. i am certain master beyond has all the gear he needs to harvest all the fruits available to him, to nurture his spirit and to impress his lady love..." :-)

i liked your comment very much, my friend. thanks!

kruu -- yes my friend. the boots are there to shield my hobbit's feet not only from the sharp rocks on my fruitless treks, but also from curious eyes that may mean me well but can provide a hidden window for the prying eyes of the evil wizard saruman... :-)

cw -- i'm glad you liked my banana pics too. if only i can give y'all a yellow, ripe, luscious banana from that harvest... :-)

  • moonriver said on Aug 11, 2007....
desertsienna -- i don't like executions too. but you will have to concede my banana execution is more productive than cutting off the heads of real people, whether royalty or commoner... :-) thanks for dropping by!

skald -- the banana is dead! long live the banana! i'm glad the effect on you was educational, not terrifying like other executions. can i speculate that iceland greenhouses are capable of producing banana fruits too?

silver -- yes, you are correct. the mango is indeed "top banana" in the tropical fruit world. but hey, i think the banana isn't too far behind in the line of succession. and i had to justify my use of "the king is dead..." hahaha. consider the banana as the prince of wales, next in line to the throne... ;-)

  • moonriver said on Aug 11, 2007....
suddenrain -- you, my friend, have just read my mind. that is exactly the next episode in the continuing saga of my banana. i can just hear the girls screaming and shouting in the back row..."peel it off, peel it off!" mouth-watering banana dishes, coming soon to a theater near you....LoL!

quietone -- there are dozens of banana varieties and banana-like species all over the world, and many varieties are found both in asia and latin america. some are table-fruit varieties -- with a sweet taste and aroma, and a soft texture. others are cooking varieties or plantains -- more starchy and tasteless. the one in the pic is a cross: it's basically a plantain, but when it's ripened properly, it can be as sweet as the more commercial table-fruit varieties like the cavendish, chiquita, etc.

after bearing fruit once, the individual tree stops producing new leaves. it can live on for quite a while, even up to one year, with its leaves all but withered. if it's cut, its root-like rhizome remains alive, and the suckers that have sprouted from it will grow faster to replace the old dying "mother tree."

banana saga, circle of life... ;-)

Have you seen a tv series entitled Going Bananas?
You really are crazy... creatively crazy! Haha...
I agree with silverwhisper though. MANGOES are the king of the tropical fruits! ;-) We got lots of them here in this warm part of the world - SE Asia!
I like the way you make executions sound fun and interesting. Haha...
    'enjoyed dropping by.
May you get bitten more by the creative bug! ;-)

suddenrain -- i'd like to have that writing instinct that you have...:-)

greentaz -- about my lunacy... you're not the first one to notice it hahaha. i see you're from asia too. "going bananas..." uhmm... can't say i've seen that series... i'm not exactly a great fan of tv. i hope you enjoy reading my previous banana blog. we talked about mangoes there too.

hey, i checked out your latest blog -- you're from the philippines! queen paranoia, sweet_cookie, lioness ... so many filipino bloggers here. if you have banana-based dishes and delicacies, i'd be interested to try them out. thanks for dropping by, greentaz.

  • moonriver said on Aug 12, 2007....
silver -- LOL. no need to fear any flying barb from me. in this part of the world, monkeys are *always seen* eating bananas whether they're married to each other or not.

but you still need to duck, though, as our british friends polar, destiny et al. might be diehard fans of the lady camilla... *wink*

quietone -- that's why i like soulcast too. where else could i practice my lunacy to the fullest and yet be commended for being educational...? lol. next time, i'm going to write about how to remove blood-sucking leeches that crawl inside your shirts and pants as you trudge through tropical rainforests. who knows, you might find it useful one of these days... ;-)

  • moonriver said on Aug 12, 2007....
ed, i happen to find the lady camilla -- in her younger days at least -- to be of more humanoid face. can't you give her the benefit of the doubt? lol

destiny, if you're reading this... there's someone here who's positively asking to be smacked with his own trout...lol.
  • quietone said on Aug 12, 2007....
Oh, yes, I am sure I will be thrilled to see pics of that my friend!!  I saw enough of those "blood suckers" as we call them here, in the brooks when we'd go wading in them.  I never got one on me and I am thankful of that...but go ahead if you feel that need to entertain us with that story!  LOL  It may indeed help someone some day!

    I have to draw a line here....LOL...

Oh well, who am i fooling....... I know wil read anything you write....yes, even leeches sucking blodd.  (disgusting)...j. you damn banana eater monkey.

    Pass me one...the fruit, i mean........*wink*

Beyond.....Lady Gingersoul is indeed touched by your desire to impress her.....uhmm.......who said you already didn't?

Let's go to Albertson then and decapitate all those impure fruits.....lol.....

  • moonriver said on Aug 14, 2007....
ginger -- duhh, the leech blog will have to wait until i wind up this banana series. i had meant to post the final sequel tonight, but this has been one hectic, chaotic, crappy day. enough to wipe the smile off my face. but hey, i'm still enjoying my banana. yum. here, have some yourself... ;-)

memyself -- i'm glad you enjoyed it. today i'm afraid i'm not fine and dandy. just a bit off-base and quirky, but i'll be all right after one banana. hey, i knew at least one blogger would notice the broom. why am i not surprised you liked it?

queenie -- there was some problem in the link you posted, but i think i got the correct link. here it is. banana fritters on a stick! wow... you have them too in the philippines? my mouth's watering already...:-)

  • queenparanoia said on Aug 14, 2007....
yeah that it!!! we have it here in the philippines and it's my favorite!!! =)

Moon, i would love to take that walk in person with you. it would be a

wonderful sight to see. and i'd be in good company!! **smile** in the

first picture there is a reflection in the water, it looks as a ....house on

stilts, and a loggy looking thingy..what are they? feel better real soon !!

  • moonriver said on Aug 14, 2007....
queenie -- if ever i decide to visit your place, would you offer me a pair of those... those... delectable honey-luscious bananas?

memyself -- i'd gladly welcome you as honored guest at the next execution, my friend. i'm already reserving a front-row seat. in the first pic, i was sharpening the scythe under a half-enclosed utility shed attached to the house (which isn't on stilts...:-). the reflection on the water shows partly the roof of the shed, a faucet with an attached soap tray (grid-like rectangle), and a couple of guava and lime trees.

  • queenparanoia said on Aug 14, 2007....
oh yes! i'll even teach you how to cook one! but maybe after the exams... =)
  • moonriver said on Aug 15, 2007....

queenpranoia - i never thought that moon would like banana-q. haha... it's so common here in the Philippines that we take them for granted. Well, i do take them for granted but i swear those golden royalty have satisfied my hunger pangs countless times since my childhood! I still enjoy them now.

moon - there's a variety of cooking banana fritters. We call them MARUYA. I tried to find a picture but I found none. il try uploading something of my own... soon. :D
  • moonriver said on Aug 15, 2007....
greentaz -- what do you call them... banana-q? oh. a vegetarian bbq.  does this mean you roast them over coals? they look fried to me (in the pic linked by queenie). i assume you eat them for snacks or dessert, or are they also served as main dish? anyway, they're yummy, i like them already.

as for "maruya"... if maruya tastes as delicious as it looks here, then i've just become a more hopeless banana addict...:-)

  • queenparanoia said on Aug 16, 2007....
moon: it's cook as a snack! i'll teach you how to cook it after the exams!!!

greentaz i' getting hungry from all of this food talk!!!
  • GreenTaz said on Aug 16, 2007....
moon - yes. we call them banana-que and what we call banana-que are indeed deep fried and not grilled over coals. But hey! Who says bananas cant be grilled? the same variety of bananas that we deep fry for banana-que are the same ones we grill. After they turn mostly brown, we smother them in margarine or butter. Whatever suits your palate. Then we roll them in sugar. Yum! :D That photo of maruyas don't come close to how they look and taste the way we do it here in our place. We cook them like babana-que but with less brown sugar or some would dip the bananas in a "breading" like dip (i don't really know the exact ingredients...) then deep fry them until they're golden brown. After they're cooked and cooled a bit, we sprinkle them with sugar.

queen - If you visit Cagayan de Oro, let me know. Our fiesta is coming up--August 28! You might wanna come and "EAT OUR HOUSE" LOL! Halong! :D
