short version: linuxworld held their third annual “fight club” for anti-virus applications. of ten tested applications, only 3 caught all 25 viruses they sent at them, which if you ask me is unacceptably low. long version here.

commentary: fittingly, one of the 3 successful applications (clam AV) is an open source anti-virus application. the other successful software were from kaspersky and symantec, neither of which surprise me by their performance.

Symantec rocks. I'd have thought McAfee would perform similarly, but I suppose 89% isn't horrible, esp. compared to six percent for that one tool! Ouch.

it's weird, isn't it? and i don't at all get the 6% thing, i figure that's gotta be a configuration problem or something, you know?

heh...i've got kaspersky running on this box (win). :D

Silver, or anyone else computer-knowledgeable - My wife and I recently purchased a new computer and are considering our AV options.  I have a friend who swears by a service you can get for free called "Avast," which I've tried in the past and seemed to work.  Plus it's free, and I'm broke, so it meets the cost criteria.  Have you heard of Avast, and do you have any other inexpensive recommendations?  You have professional computer experience, so I trust your opinion on this one...

SP: your best bet, and i'm assuming you're running some flavor of windows, is probably AVG, aka grisoft's anti-virus. it's free, so that definitely hits the price you want, and use it on my desktop, actually.

i'm unfamiliar with avast, which doesn't mean it isn't good, but i've used AVG and am fond of it. :>
