no. because it gives them the chance to be rude. and i think anonymous comments are a coward's way of striking back.
  • fearing said on Aug 08, 2007....
So far, yes I do.  I'm thinking of changing it.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Aug 08, 2007....
I don't think I've disabled it, though the thought has crossed my mind multiple times recently. I try hard not to "censor" people even if I disagree with them; however, I think (as queen said) anonymous commenting lends itself to enabling cowardice and certain forms of rudeness, as we've seen, and should that happen on my blog, I wouldn't think twice about blocking anonymous commenting.

  • moonriver said on Aug 08, 2007....
it depends. so far i haven't gotten any anon comment on my blogs that's so unacceptable that i have to delete it (post-facto censorship, which may be ok case-to-case). much less reason for me to block anon comments as a whole (imo, a form of a priori censorship, which i'm not prepared to advocate right now).

  • evil_twin said on Aug 08, 2007....
I did allow them until yesterday. Not because anything happened to me, because I never had a problem so far. But I kept seeing other people's blogs being hit with multiple anon comments that filled up the page, so I decided to stop that before it did happen. It's annoying.

I don't allow anonymous comments on my blog.  I was getting some fairly nasty ones when I was writing about my marriage a lot.  They were meant to hurt and they did.  I blocked them at that point. Anyone is free to comment on my blog, I just want them to stand by what they say and not hide behind an anonymous comment.

I do not have them blocked.........no one has ever commented to me anonymously, so I never thought about it til Kyle said something. Does someone need to comment to me anonymous before I can block it, or is there a different way?

I have officially changed it.  No anonymous commenting on my blog now.  If you can't sign your name to it - don't bother saying anything.

  • rupert7 said on Aug 08, 2007....
If I ever knew how to block anon comments as a whole, then I have forgotten is I remember I will do it. I have had a little trouble and I have seen others who have had a lot. I feel that if a comment is "on the level" there is no reason to go anonymous. As others have noted here its use is  pretty  despicable when abused.
  • gingersoul said on Aug 08, 2007....

Ed..........for the very first time i got an anon comment on my recent Swapping names's post.......it was actually a cute comment.. with a nice poetry or lyrics or wathever it was and when i ask anon to stop the anon actually stopped...so cute...

I agree with Moon...i want to decide based on how much offensive the anon comment might be...

  • botoni said on Aug 08, 2007....
So far I ve let them be but I I ve rarely had one. I d likely block if they became a bother.
  • bloc said on Aug 08, 2007....
I allowed it for a long time, but had to block it recently. It's too easily abused.
  • MissMimi said on Aug 08, 2007....
I had blocked them a while back, then  unblocked them for a while, now they're blocked again.  I've seen that feature abused too much lately.
  • NotSoSinglechick25 said on Aug 08, 2007....
I've only had one or two anon comments and they weren't too bad so I haven't had reason to block yet.  Gimme a reason tho and I will lol.

I blocked them after lon stretches of people being to ignorant to excuse.
  • cankwhiteboy said on Aug 08, 2007....
I'm too damn stupid to figure out how it works, so I couldn't tell you.  It's a nice combination of the site being a bit awkward and me being a bit retarded.
  • Zayda said on Aug 08, 2007....
I've had them blocked for about 3-4 months now. I've seen the feature abused too much and frankly, if someone has something rude or nasty to say, they should have the spine to sign their name to their nastiness.
  • skald said on Aug 08, 2007....
I still do but if I get some abusive anonymous commenting I might block it.
  • Eilan said on Aug 08, 2007....
I initially blocked anonymous comments a couple of months ago because of spammers, but I'm gonna keep it that way.  Besides, I'd like to have the chance to block the cajoneless wonder who's being nasty and I can't do that if he or she comments anonymously.
  • biglove said on Aug 08, 2007....
I don't get enough comments on any of my blogs to consider blocking someone. I guess, if they were being an asshole and contributing anything to the subject I might.
  • Suddenrain said on Aug 08, 2007....
Silver, LoL was this question brought on by our recent bout on my post with anon who turned out to be miss Hottips herself? You know I've blocked all anon now. If someone wants to hide to make comments, do it somewhere else. I'm still fuming over the nerve of her.  What kinda person does that???
  • cateemay said on Aug 08, 2007....
I agree-- Anon comments are just cowards who were blocked for a reason from a blog. I think easily within a month of my being here I had to disable it. It's just no fun.
  • Souljacker said on Aug 08, 2007....
I don't see the point. Anyone can make legitamate accounts to flame you legitamately anyway. Email addresses to use are ten-a-penny these days. Just ignore the haters.
If their lives are so pointless as to attempt to obstruct and slate others -so be it. Ultimately - it's their loss.
  • pickersplock said on Aug 08, 2007....
    I blocked them recently.
  • brokenandused said on Aug 08, 2007....
Silverwhisper: the way i see it is everyone has a right to be here, whether they have the courage to pick a fake name or remain anon. I haven't blocked them and prolly never will. If i don't like their comments i delete them, but i try to remember that this is a free speech site, and they are entitled to say what they want. As long as they aren't  advertising or something along those lines.
  • cakebottom said on Aug 08, 2007....
*blushes* I didn't even know you could or couldn't allow anonymous commenting.  Apparently I don't spend enough time on soulcast.  *is ashamed*
  • Expendable said on Aug 08, 2007....
I stopped allowing anonymous comments a while back. If there's something you want to say privately, you can pm now. No need for anonymous comments.
  • sweet_cookie01 said on Aug 08, 2007....
from the beginning i blocked anonymous comments, if a person has to say something good or bad he must not be ashamed to show who he is in the first place right?.... i havent blocked anyone or deleted any comments from those with user names.
  • PassionTraveler said on Aug 09, 2007....
I don't care unless it gets offensive. I've thought to write some posts that would request very personal information and would require all posts be anonymous or I'd delete them. But if someone posts anonymous and it's rude, I'd delete. Otherwise, don't care.

    "CopsExtrodinaire"

I think you're missing an 'a' in there somewhere.

To the point, I don't post much and don't get many comments, but in principle I believe in the ability to comment anonymously.  It gives people the safety to reveal certain things without fear of discovery or retribution.  Obviously it can be problematic at times.
  • lfbno7 said on Aug 09, 2007....
Everyone is anonymous to me so what do i care.  I wouldn't know any of you if I sat next to you on a bus.
  • Bronx said on Aug 09, 2007....
I allow it - it's like life itself: someone you don't know may walk up to you and give you some life-changing news without leaving a name.

Whether a Good Samaritan or The Devil himself, what he/she has to say also says a lot about the person commenting.
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 09, 2007....
heh...my posts tended to be targeted by anonymous cowards, esp back when popularity figured into the featured posts stuff. i've been tempted a few times myself but really only blocked anonymous as of this year. and lately, w/ the spate of anonymous drivel i've seen, i imagine a number of others will do the same.

the only people i block are known spammers. i probably will need to change that policy at some point in the future.

cwb: yep, someone needs to comment anonymously to you before you can block anonymous commenting, just as another user has to comment to you before you can block him/her/it.

kelly, please don't point out typos. he'll just be obliged to create yet another alt.

suddenrain: no, not really. it's been something i've been meaning to write for some time, actually.

I didn't even know one could do such a thing as block them!  so no  I have not blocked anonymous commenting.   Learn something new every day.
  • muckpar said on Aug 09, 2007....
I blocked anonymous because he or she tried to make a post I wrote look like a big joke.  It's just a pet peeve of mine for someone to do that, and I don't want anything to do with people who exhibit such behavior.

BTW ed:  I appreciate your consistent comments to my posts and even though I sometimes disagree I respect your sharing your views.
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 09, 2007....
quietone: hey, no day in which you learn something new is ever a total loss, then, right? :>

muckpar: i understand re: anonymous. and i'm always interested in knowing what you think of things, man. even though yeah, we may not agree, how very boring if we did about everthing, no? :>

Now that is the way SC and commenting should be. You can agree to disagree without smearing and cussing and anon. bull. Silver, you really are a good person, no matter what you think and Muckpar that comment was so cool.  :-)

I used to allow anon commenting. Then, when I started being attacked by Someone, I disallowed it. If Someone wants to come on my blog and attack me, they can have the balls to use their name.
