so i'm awake and can't go back to bed. i'm staring at 9, almost 10 pages, of new blog entries in my users. and b/c i'm a bit obsesesive like that, i'm gonna roll through all of it, or at least try like hell to do so before i have to leave to take my car in for service in a few hours.

[cracks knuckles]

but if you ever wanted to know how much you'd miss in about 1 week off of SC: that's how much. yeah, i know, i read an awful lot of people, but by & large, you guys read most of the same folks, i bet.

but naturally, this puts me in mind of a poll: if you've been away for a week, do you remember how many pages of my users you had?

I don't know how many pages of users I have when I'm here.  You always make me feel guilty when you talk about going through your 'users page'.  Guilt, guilt, guilt.  I think that I'm neglecting people.  I should be reading everyone's post.  I'm subscribed to them.  I worry those people will think I'm not interested.......guilt and more guilt.  Thanks Ed.

Seriously, I do feel sad that I don't use that feature but the truth is, I don't have the time or the inclination to do it.  I love the people here.  I love to read about their lives but I just don't have time to go through several pages when I have other demands as a mom.  My time here is my down-time.  My hobby.  It gives me a few minutes of adult conversation and friendship but if I'm gonna spend a lot of time reading, I need to be reading to or listening to a 7year old read.  Since school started back, my SC allotment has been cut.  Time with Scooter is limited so I only try to get on here while he is asleep or busy doing something else.  Speaking of which, time for Scooter to roll out of bed - I gotta get hoppin.  His education awaits!

I didn't mean for this to sound like a rant.  It wasn't - I promise.  I was trying to explain myself and the guilt kept creeping in........
I'll carry that burden all day.  Sniffle, sniffle.

bah, i'm immune to guilt! :p

queen: i think i might just give up on 15 pages, to be honest...

What a special moment in life - the first trout smack by Ed.  Sigh.  The tears have stopped, the sniffles gone, the guilt has lifted, the clouds roll back and I feel the warmth of the sun.........

  • silverwhisper said on Aug 03, 2007....
wait, was that seriously your very first ever trout-smack? i'm sorry to have been remiss, fearing... :<

I've never been away for a week yet, so I have no idea how much I'd miss. Sometimes I don't check in for a day, and I've had two pages of new posts to look at. But other times, I come back and there's hardly anything new. I just never know what to expect. I'm more likely to be gone on a weekend, and usually it's slow here anyway.

I have no idea how many pages I'd have (ask me after our trip to Germany in December :-p), but it's daunting enough some days to try to keep up with all of the conversations I'm interested in. I read a lot more posts than I actually comment on (easier to just read than type with arms mostly full these days ;-)).

15 pages would be a bit out of my league as well, I think! The most I've ever had to catch up on that I recall (in that tab, anyway - my My Conversations gets a bit unwieldy now and then) was four pages or so.

  • wombat said on Aug 03, 2007....
I only use "most recent" and "my conversations" tabs.  I figure if I go through all the "most recent" back to where I left off, then I am not missing anyone on "my users."  If I have been gone a long while, it takes forever to catch up!  (I hope you are enjoying your "free time.")
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 03, 2007....
e_t: you have no idea how glad i am that it's been slow lately--honestly, i've been off for a day or two and wanted to give up on catching up. i think i might draw the line at ten pages...

infernal: believe it or not, despite my seeming omnipresence, i don't comment on every blog entry i see, either. although i do usually postmark the ones i don't comment on, come to think of it...

wombat: that's cool, you catch more that way...although it does mean that you tend to find more newcomers than i do, actually.

Yup, first trout smack.  I thought maybe it was some sort of exclusive club, right of passage or I was just not worthy yet.  Do you have standards or is it a fly by the seat of your pants kinda thing?  When the urge strikes to you just flail away?

I can't believe I've waited so long and recieved two trout smacks within hours of each other.

I've often wondered where it originated and if there were any rules.  Can any type of "gilded" creature be used?

  • silverwhisper said on Aug 03, 2007....
the trout-smack dates back to the hoary days of usenet, IIRC. :> and believe it or not, i've actually blogged about it before. :>

no pressure, I usually just catch the front page if I am in a hurry...I had to stop trying to catch up on all my users coz it made me frantic!!
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 03, 2007....
heh...it's making me kinda twitchy...i'm down to page 3, though! :D

Waaaaaaay back in Aug. of 07'.  I was just a babe back then.  No wonder I didn't know how it originated.  Thanks for the information.

I'll be hunting those gilded creatures this afternoon with Scooter Bug.  Be ready.  I shall return armed and dangerous.  Minnows strike fear in the hearts of many.

Ya miss a day and ya might as well have slipped into a coma!  It sometimes gets a little overwhelming just to keep up, but to miss a day or two really puts the screws onto you!

I have learned to just skim the blogs I miss over the weekend.  The really popular response ones end up on the feature page most of the time.
  • gingersoul said on Aug 03, 2007....

Missing one week? Piece of cake.

Try to catch up with almost one month, as i am doing, then we can talk  ......

i only now figured out important shifting dynamics in some blogger's lives....still looking for some missing bloggers...still not understanding why i do bother so much.....lol...

  • polarheart said on Aug 03, 2007....
Well, I know and understand that I'm missing stacks. . .and it sucks.  It feels like the train has left the station and I have been left stranded on the platform :(
  • Alyss said on Aug 03, 2007....
Dunno but I'll be sure to pop back here and tell you when I get back next week.
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 03, 2007....
fearing: bah, i'm not scared! :p

u-i: generally that's true, although i find that often, the real gems don't hit the featured list, myself.

GS: i was wondering how you were managing things. :>

polar: hey, you only have as much time as you have. we all understand, you know. :>

alyss: heh...shoulda seen that response coming. :>

i've only been here just over a week, so i haven't had time to miss anything yet... if that makes any sense!
  • thearmchairbitch said on Aug 03, 2007....
I've always been amazed how you would be one of the first few to read my new postings and leave a comment so soon thereafter (sometimes barely minutes after i'd posted!). You're a truly dedicated soulcaster! :->
  • hotaka said on Aug 04, 2007....

I am afraid I only go to my users after I have been through the first featured post page and first two pages of my conversations. By then I have killed about two hours and only then if I still have time will I go to my users. I also try to check out the people I claim to subscribe to because some of them don't end up on the featured posts page very often and I want to see what they are up to. Honestly, just coming back after the weekend has me feeling overwhelmed.

If I am away for a week I feel like I have missed 7 weeks of episodes of all my favourite dramas!

  • silverwhisper said on Aug 04, 2007....
traveler: o, it makes sense. :>

armchair: heh...i tend to be a bit obsessive about some things. :>

hotaka: a week of soulcast time = 7 weeks of TV time, then? :D it's hard, sometimes, i know. :>

  • hotaka said on Aug 04, 2007....
Basically, yeah. Or it's like coming home from a week's vacation and having a stack of newspapers to read through to catch up on everything. But I like the TV analogy better.
  • silverwhisper said on Aug 04, 2007....
meh, i don't get newspapers. but i do get the idea. :>

I don't think I've ever been away for a week since I've been blogging here.  I am like wombat though.  I start with the conversations and then go from the featured posts page.  I use the users page, but not quite as often.  Once I start commenting, I skip around to others who have commented on the posts I'm on.

There is no method to my madness.  :-)
