Jim Morrison, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Janis Joplin, Karen Carpenter, John Denver, the Big Bopper, Judy Garland, Freddy Prinz (Sr.), James Dean, Kurt Cobain, John Lennon...  the list goes on.

If they were still alive, what would they be doing today?  (Assume they no longer have the career that made them famous).  I'll go first.  I've often thought that, if he were alive today, Jim Morrison would be a game show host.

What do you see the rest of these people doing?

wow, that is quite a list of people!! that would be some party if they all were there.  I can't really see them doing anything else but what they did...entertain.  It is hard to believe they are all gone and missed.
  • kruuyai said on Aug 02, 2007....
quietone:  I guess we could do the same sort of speculation for some of the oldies that are still alive... they're alive, but what are they doing?   Tony Orlando, David Cassidy, Donny Osmond.... hmmm, this list isn't turning out as great as the last one.  There must be something about death that preserves greatness?
  • quietone said on Aug 02, 2007....
hmm I think you could find any one of them you mentioned in Vagas or Reno doing a show if you looked!  LOL   here is one more  Cher? where did she go?
  • beyondtheveil said on Aug 02, 2007....
kruu- I'm going to try my luck with four.

Elvis- I can envision him as a preacher.

James Dean- I see him on a big ranch in New Mexico.

Janis Joplin and Judy Garland- Wouldn't have made it. They would be substance abusers in and out of treatment centers.
  • kruuyai said on Aug 02, 2007....
quietone:  Cher?  Isn't she still around?  But what about Sonny?  I guess he'd still be mayor of Hollywood or something.

beyond: Bingo on Elvis!  I would normally agree with you on James Dean, except that I happen to know that he was last seen in Slovakia with kruuyai, and reported to be headed for Minnesota to live out his days in fearful hiding from evil temptresses.  Janis and Judy... sigh... you may very well be right.

I've worked on the fringes of the entertainment industry for several years and can tell you that most of the people you meantioned were talented and hard working people.  When these people perform in the movies, go on tour, or on TV, it's 10-12 hours, six and sometimes seven days a week.  Their lives were completely wrapped up in career.

Being celebrities also meant that they gave up a private life.  I would venture to say if they tried to do it all over again, they would do exactly as the did.  If they were still alive, they would cherish a private life and would stay away from the limelight as much as they could.

However, you had those like, Bob Hope, and George Burns, who needed an audience at all times.  It was in their blood.
  • kruuyai said on Aug 02, 2007....
buck:  So, if they were going to stay out of the limelight, what kind of careers do you think they'd choose?
  • lfbno7 said on Aug 02, 2007....
jim morrison would be a porno actor.  elvis would be a tv evangelist.  janis joplin would be on a farm getting drunk.  marilyn would be a serious actor.  john lennon would be one of the senators representing new york.

beyond the veil, i swear i didn't read your comments before writing mine.  yours are so much like mine.  before hitting Submit Comment i just took a look at some of the other answers, and there you were, saying the same as me.  son of a gun.  we agree on elvis and janis joplin.

kruu, look at this, all three of us agree on elvis and janis.  i bet that is because we are all correct.
  • kruuyai said on Aug 02, 2007....
lfbno7:  All three of us can't be wrong!  :)  Jim as a porn star... I guess I can see that.  Either way, I see him smoking a stogie.
  • lfbno7 said on Aug 02, 2007....
back in the 60s i took my girlfriend to a concert where jim morrison was performing.  he was touching the microphone stand as if it was a part of his anatomy, and my girlfriend was going "ewwwww".  He was already a porn actor, so it isn't much of a jump.

lfbno7:  True enough.,  Hey, can you tell me what your handle stands for so I don't have to concentrate so hard every time I type it? ;)

My real life initials are LF.  My first name is Lennie.

The B stands for Baseball because I once marketed a dice baseball game that I called LF Baseball, and my fans all called it LFB.

The "No 7" comes from my favorite baseball player Mickey Mantle.  He was number 7 on the Yankees.  I met him once at a card convention.  I gave him one of my baseball game cards to sign - his own of course.  He looked it over, front and back, interested in it.  Then instead of just signing his name, he wrote in large letters on my card "Mickey Mantle No. 7".

So there you have LFB No7.

I don't have any great guesses but could see books in print by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.  I loved John Denver.  I got to see him in concert, and was figuring it might be boring.  Man, was I surprised!  He had a huge orchestra and the evening was magical. I was so sad to hear of his passing.  I would just want him go still be doing what he loved best--writing, singing and flying.

I'm sure Buddy Holly would have become a big record producer. He was way ahead of his time and came up with ideas that are the norm now.
  • kruuyai said on Aug 03, 2007....
7:  Okay, that doesn't help as much as i thought it would :p  May I just call you 7?

destiny:  Who's bob geldof?  I was always under the impression that John and Yoko had a very close relationship (regardless of what others thought about her).  Do you think it would have gone sour?  We'll have to consult frontanack on that.  I like your idea about a music or poetry school for poor but talented kids.   Would he still be drawing and painting, do you think?

I agree that Elvis would be way washed up by now.  James Dean... I almost had him!  lol

wombat:  Yes, I could see John & Yoko writing books.  I saw John Denver in concert once, too... at Copper Mountain, shortly after I moved to Colorado.  It was great, just sitting on the grass on the side of the mountain and watching him across the valley.  I could have gone to his funeral, it was so close, but it never occurred to me.  Anyway, I prefer to remember him the way he was.

    paulwar:  LOL

    5dollar: Perhaps so.

I often wonder what Shakespeare would be doing today.  I'm sure he would be a writer, but what the heck would he write? ....plays?...books?....Movies?....Sitcoms?
  • exhibit_c said on Aug 03, 2007....
One that you can take to the bank: Mama Cass would still be singing.

On the comments about the still living but out-of-the-limelight entertainers: I'm sure buckrogers is right that most are still working and doing pretty well. The media spotlight is very selective. A guy like Jimmy Buffet has a huge following, but the media pays no attention. Hell, they didn't even pay attention to the Greatful Dead for years and years.

I saw a tape of a one act play based on the Gospel of John with Dean Jones. It was a very impressive performance, and about as far from Herbie the Love Bug was you can imagine.
  • kruuyai said on Aug 04, 2007....
Actorguy:  I like the idea of Shakespeare writing sitcoms. Some of his stuff kind of had that aura to it anyway, didn't it?

exhibit_c:  Since the rules of the game are that they  no longer have the career that made them famous, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that she'd be selling ham sandwiches.
  • exhibit_c said on Aug 04, 2007....
Just to correct an error, "St. John in Exile" with Dean Jones is a one man play, not a one act play.

I think Shakespeare would be doing movies, but then, he might be doing web sites.

  • kruuyai said on Aug 04, 2007....
exhibit_c:  LOL.... can you imagine the traffic that a Shakespeare designer website would attract?

Okay, I'm starting to get what you're talking about now.  Dean Jones was the guy in the Love Bug, right?  Duh... I've been out of the loop for a while. That does sound like quite a switch.  Which supports my hypothesis....
