My three year old wakes up around 12:30 am every single night. He whimpers, stumbles out of bed and wanders into my room where we have the same conversation:

"Did you have a bad dream?"
"No, I need a dwink."
"I will go get you a glass of milk if you go back to your bed."
He shakes his head yes, I carry him to his bed and then bring him a glass of milk. It's always the same thing, at the same time, with the same question and the same answer.

So, WHY do I always ask him if he had a bad dream? Shouldn't I know by now that he just wants a 'dwink? And why did it take me a year to realize that? To top it off, the past few nights I have been on SC at 12:30 so I had to run up the stairs and jump in my bed when I heard him whimper....Why didn't I just take a glass of milk up with me and save us both a trip??

Do you think pregnancy kills brain cells? Have you caught yourself doing similar things?

It's been so long, that I can't remember what the right & wrong thing is with 3 year olds, but I was wondering if you couldn't put a drinking bottle (like cyclists use) in his room, then he can get his dwink himself.

As for brain cells, I think I've forgotten what those are. I've been known to put wierd things (car keys, toothbrush etc) in the fridge or freezer - what I was thinking @ those times, who knows?
Sometimes, this mommy wishes she could just go get a dwink......

mirror, i think the exact opposite is true -- pregnancy triggers in the mother the activation of more brain cells which would otherwise be just inert gray matter. part of our deep evolutionary adaptation.

my own approach has always been, to let my kid get up, tell me what s/he needs, which i provide, with an added pat or hug of assurance, plus reminder to take a trip to the bathroom to relieve him/herself before going back to bed. i think it helps that this routine becomes a ritual for both parent and child... ;-)

jadestar: I'm not really sure, but i think as long as it is not a bottle in his mouth when he is falling asleep, it is ok.  I'm not sure why I didn't think of that either...LOL
i keep a special little dwink in the top cupboard for very difficult days! :)

moon: maybe mine never activated...:) Kidding.... I think it has become such a routine that common sense is not involved.... i can't believe i just didn't take a drink up to him when i heard him....why run up and jump in bed...but maybe subconsiously I was thinking it might ruin both of our nights if i am not where i usually am!

I've become very forgetfull.  I often walk into a room to do something and forget what I was supposed to do.  Now I know how my Grandmother felt, she was headed for the bathroom with the sugar bowl, and I said, "Grandma, why are you taking sugar to the bathroom?"  She said, "I have no idea."
    That's me now!

lmao.... i used to think it was really funny when my grandma and my mother did those things....it's not quite as funny when I do it! :)

Yeah....I had memory loss and did silly things after I had my oldest daughter.....the silliest thing was forgetting what a pain in the ass being pregnant is and doing it again!!!!  LOL  :-P  Minnie

mirror -- aww you're too modest. mother instinct... mom routines... intuitive sense that bonds mother and child... these are some of the female functions that don't get measured in IQ tests, that are often taken for granted, but which actually take up a tremendous amount of grey matter. it is said that a mother can smell her child's scent, hear her child's cry, etc. 10x more sensitively than a non-mother.

but yes, i know what you mean about chores being soooo routine you can actually do them without thinking. until something clicks and you stop and say, "why am i doing it this way...?" heh, what am i doing here, talking like a mother? i need a dwink myself...hahaha.

mm: LMAO!!!!! almost had my soda sprayed all over the computer monitor on that one.

moon: I would agree with that.... it doesn't matter how many children are screeching and crying at a playground.... i can always tell if it is one of my children. LOL We lovingly refer to those special dwinks as mommy's medicine in our house. It's important to take regularly.... preferably once per night just before bed....:)

Pregnancy definitely killed my brain cells! I went out shopping one day and spun the trolley around as a fun thing for my daughter... forgetting that she was actually at home with my mum and all I had was a trolley full of groceries!

I was very glad no one was watching at the time... (that I know of!)
