Can you send a text message to 911?

I was thinking that there would be certain situations where you would not be able to actually call 911. But, you might be in a position to send a text message. For example, if you were being held hostage or being robbed or kidnapped or something like that. But, can 911 dispatch receive text messages?

I have my phone set to voice dial 911.

All I have to do is press "TALK" and say, 9-1-1. It automatically dials 911. This would be useful if I can't move much.

Your idea is stellar.... you should look into that!!!!

wow....I've never thought of that either. that is actually something all people should do... could be useful in car accidents and all kinds of scenerios.... great idea!

well, me being in the 1% that does not have a cell phone, I would not know.  But that is a great point! And a good idea if it cannot be done, it should be.

um...if you're not in the area in which the phone number is registered, i would imagine that this is of limited usefulness, no?

silverwhisper, with the advent of gps technology in cell phones, there is a movement to make gps mandatory so that emergency services can locate the phone. I assume that the GPS location will be logged for all calls for the convenience of law enforcement. (It's one of my pet peeves that "the convenience of law enforcement" is a big part of GNP and no one much notices.)

quietone: there are quite a few of my friends that don't have one... we have very limited service areas here being in the middle of nowhere....so even though i have one i can't use it like in other areas of the country/state.

ed: i'm not sure what you mean by it being registered?

exhibit c: so people can track you all the time? or just when you call 911?

about service availability, even if you cannot receive service using your provider, the moment you dial 911 it will go through. when my phone is on the blink, or I lose service, or I change my SIM card, all I can call out is 911.

As for a 911 call, I would imagine so, since those who are mute or deaf cannot "call" on the phone.

good point tbs230... I didn't think about that.

what i was wondering was whether a mobile call to 911 goes to the 911 call center in the phyical area where the phone number was purchased. e.g., if you bought your phone in philly and had a philly phone#, would you get the philly 911? if your philly phone was in boston, would it still call philly or boston?

I have heard that in my area (near NYC), an operator asks what local 911 you want to be transferred to. I would hope that it relates to the cell you are in, and not your home area, but I don't actually know that.
