Today I had a patient and I really, really thought her name was a mistake!! I picked up her chart and it said that her name was Female Smith (Smith is not the real last name, btw) But her name was FEMALE!!! Did her parents run out of ideas? LOL Could they not think of a name, so the hospital labeled her 'female Smith' and they thought, 'that's cute! let's keep that!' LOL!

But apparently it is pronounced Fee-Mall-A. Can you believe that? It made me laugh.........

I also had a patient before named Bridget Jones! I could not help but to tell her, hey, I loved your diary! LOL Then she said she got that sort of comment all the time, of course.

Another good one was the last name Slutsky. This is a doctor I worked with at another clinic.......a gynecologist!! LOL! Would you feel comfortable to see a gyno named Dr. Slutsky? Maybe that's just my dirty mind? LOL

But the best name I have come across is this one. I had a young patient once with the last name Hussein. And when I looked at her medical chart, her father's name was Saddam!!!!! It seriously was! And instantly when she and her mother saw me look at that, they both said to me very fast, he's not THAT Saddam!!!

Wouldn't you feel like changing your name???? I know that I would! How horrible to have the name of someone like that.......I would be changing that to Bob Smith very quickly! LOL

Does anyone else have any stories of people with funny or weird or famous names like that? I had a friend who dated a guy named Jim Carey too! Only it was not THE Jim Carey, of course.......but stuff like that always makes me laugh.

I've always hated my first name because my mother chose to spell in a way that practically guarantees it will be mispronounced.  Sometimes I correct people, sometimes I don't.

LOL... I can't even imagine living with some of those names! I haven't personally heard any like those, I guess people in our town are pretty boring! But, I did spend a lot of time choosing the names for my children just to make sure they couldn't be turned around or sound like other words or anything like that. It made choosing names quite difficult!!

A priest here who has had a lot of media is named James Fairy......of course his coverage was because he came out as being gay. Then there is the famous Mrs. Bobbit....what else could she possibly do with a name like that other than chop off a penis.

My mom's a medical transcriptionist and she and her co-workers keep lists of the funny/odd/unique/interesting names they encounter.  I can't recall any of them at the moment.

My husband used to know a (male) law enforcement officer named Lonnie Anderson.

I have heard a few.  My oldest son has a not so common name.  He has a friend with a brother named Zeplin.
My grandfather, dad and oldest brother have the same first and middle names.  They are VERY unique but I won't put them here.  My parents were determined that the first child they had would be named the same and let's just say I'm glad I was a second child.  It would not have sounded good on a girl.

I am one of those people who has an 'unusual' name. I grew up with people all around me making jokes which, of course, I took personally. Even now, when I meet new people, they have to at some point make a joke of my name, to which I sarchastically say 'I've never heard that one before! We have a nice little laugh, and then they realize that I must have been one of those people who grew up being ridiculed for my unusual name.
So, why does it feel so irreverant to do that to someone's face when you get older? Perhaps because you realize that everyone has some quirk, some percieved imperfection that makes them feel 'less' than everyone else when it's exposed. A name, however, cannot be hidden, because it is usually the first personal thing that everyone learns about you. Hardly ever does anyone over 30 make a joke of my name, if that tells you anything :-)

btw nurse, I'm not at all offended and I hope no one thinks I am. This was a perfect opportunity for me, one of those 'people with a funny name' to tell all you 'normal named' people what it's like from our side :-)

I went to grade school with a guy named John Kennedy. He got teased a bit but all in good fun. I remember a girl named E-Dream. I asked her why her mom named her that, and she said she still hasn't gotten an explanation what her name meant. I think some parents who name their kids weird names really don't think about the repercussion the kids get on the school yard.
  • evil_twin said on Jul 28, 2007....
Travelr, I didn't think your name was unusual at all. Go figure? I've heard of lots of people with that same name (and no, don't worry, I'm not saying what it is).

Anyway, some of these names are just hilarious! I knew a girl in grade school who was named Bobbie Sox. Personally, that sounds like a porn star to me! I wouldn't want to give my daughter a stupid name like that!

My mom had two very good friends in high school. One was named Beverly and the other Tommy. But the thing is, Beverly was a guy and Tommy was a girl!! :-P And I once went to a dentist that was named Dr. Kelly Kelly. Why do people do that?

Kyle - I'm surprised it's a common name where you are. I've never found it to be a common name anywhere in America, mostly due to the nature of the name. Just not something anyone would think of as an actual 'name'. I've been subject to a resurgance of 'funny' comments in the last couple years because someone with my name became popular for a short time, and that name has lived on through our popular culture. Unfortunately for me, this person was revealed recently as being gay! :-)

But he is really popular.... :-P But I have seen the name quite a lot and I can't really think of anything funny to say about it. I knew a girl named Cherry Hill when I was in high school. Poor thing got made fun of by the guys. Sad part was that she was very beautiful and the guys would say something about being on top of Cherry Hill. Or I have popped Cherry's cherry. It was awful. I thought about what I was going to name my son before I did so and the worst I could come up with was Cryin Ryan. Fortunately, his a pretty tough kid and takes his scrapes with a laugh so that hasn't become a factor. I also knew someone whose parents went overseas to Bologna, Italy and loved it there. Their last name was Butcher. Guess what they named their son......Bologna Butcher. Poor guy. I dated a guy whose name was Moss Waldock. He jokes that his parents were hippies and when they found out his mom was pregnant they were sitting around smoking weed and thought naming him Moss would be cool and then toke again and laugh. He grew up and had to be tough to be able to live down his name. Most people would look at him today and think....I'm not messing with that dude. He looks pretty mean......In all reality he's a big, athletic teddy bear.
