Had a tough night last night.  I went to dinner with a friend, which was great, I had fun.  Then as I was leaving, I got into my car, started it, then I remembered I had something to give my friend before she left.  So I hopped out of the car, my door shut....I locked my damn keys in my car!!!!!!!  Argh!!!  Freakin' car was running too!!!  I was so mad at myself.....

My friend used her cell to call for a locksmith, and luckily, they got there pretty quickly.  The guy used this pump thing to crack the door enough to slide a pole through to open the door.  The "funny" part was, he was halfway in, when he turns and tells me how much this is going to cost me......$119 for the unlocking....$69 for the service call!!!!!!  $188!!!!!!!  Pardon my french but, FUCK!  I mean, he's halfway in my car, what am I going to say?  "Ummm, no thanks, just leave the keys in there, I'll walk home"!!!

So, I said ok, he unlocked my car and I was on my merry way.....$188 lighter!

I'm pretty sure I was hosed....but it was a Saturday night in D.C., so I guess, what can I expect?

oh my i think you have been robbed!....giggling... well atleast this will be a lesson for you not to forget your keys!

Ouch, that was an expensive mistake! That does sound like a lot of money to get your car opened. You should get a Triple A membership. Then that type of call is free! Well, you pay your dues, but it's worth it. It's less than what you paid for one call! I've locked my keys in my car before too, and it sucks.

Oh, MM that was steep, but at least you were safe and continued on your way, that is the important thing. I bet it would have been nice to have "on star" about then huh?  I wonder how much that costs a month.

minnie- I hate to tell you this now, but its a lot cheaper to carry an extra key or use a magnetic box concealed on the car.

Or maybe the car club is the best deal. They would not only take care of this situation,  but also running out of gas or breaking down. You have to wait on them though. I think they run about 50 bucks a year.

Ouch, that isn't chump change, huh?! Sorry that happened to you. Sounds like something that would happen to me!

Being a slow learner I ve done that once with the car running and once not running. The running occassion was a rental car. Should be an easy solution but would you believe the only other key was 50 miles away! Of course the engine wasnt only running but it was stuck on rev position. When the agents runner got there the entire underside was literally red hot. The second time was late at nite in a very questionable area of a major city. It was in the days when one could jimmy there way in with a coat hanger. Ever go from business to business in teh toughest neighborhood you can find asking for a coat hanger to break into a car?

Minnie, I sympathise, my dear - READ THIS - just to say that when they came to fix the window I had broken the main windows electric motor had ceased and I needed a new motor for the window before the small one could be fitted!! That cost another £120!!

Minnie, that does seem rather steep. I remember a couple of months ago I met a friend at a baseball game. I hit the road and he called me if I could come back to the stadium because he had lost his keys to his rental car. After checking the lost and found and another check of his backpack by the both of us, he finally decided to call AAA and the rental car company. His idea was to tow the car back to the airport, get a replacement car and then pay the rental company for the lost keys. The cost was about $200. He thought, and I thought too, was way too steep. But he also felt he had no other choice. I stayed with him until the tow truck got there, and then I suggested that maybe he dropped the keys in the trunk before he closed it. He remembered that he did put something in the trunk at one point after parking the car. The tow truck guy was able to open the driver's side door, but since, like most rental cars these days, the keys were equipped with a power-locks switch and we couldn't find a way to open the trunk without it. He called back the car rental company and they told him that in this model there was a secret compartment for the trunk to the left of the steering wheel. We hit the button, the trunk opened and there were the keys. We then went our merry way, some two hours later.

    minnie,
I did that once.  I locked both sets of keys in my car at work but it wasn't running.  It didn't cost me nearly as much as you but that was probably 15 years ago when it happened. I felt so dense.  It does sound like your charges were pretty steep.

Hey Everyone!  I just got home from work (gotta make some dough to replace all that money I shelled out last night!!!!  LOL) and read everyone’s comments!!  Thank you all for reading!  I hope I don’t forget anyone!!

Sweet_cookie…..I’m pretty sure I was robbed too….The guy was a even a young good looking guy and I tried the flirting thing and I was dressed nice with a low cut shirt and no discount!  What good is a set of boobs and a smile if you can’t get a discount?!?  Lol

Evil_twin…..like I told sweet_cookie, I tried to flirt my way out of it, but it didn’t work.  I think I will be calling triple A tomorrow….I seem to be having a run of bad luck!!

Quietone…..I was slightly worried, I mean, I WAS in Washington D.C., not exactly the safest place in the world!  Not that any big city is, but there were lots of people around and my friend stayed with me.  I’m getting a new car soon and I will definitely be looking into Onstar!!

Beyond….I have heard of those magnetic key boxes!  That might be a good idea!  I never thought of that!  Thanks!!

Perdy….Hi!  Yeah, stuff like this happens to me a lot….I posted once about how I single handedly shut down all the gas pumps at the 7-11…..I’m always doing something stupid!  Comic relief my friends call me….

  • minniemouse said on Jul 15, 2007....

Botoni…LOL…..I’m glad you were ok looking for a coat hanger.  If it was a questionable neighborhood, I’m sure it wasn’t the first time they were asked for a coat hanger!

Polar…LOL….I must have missed that post of yours!  That is funny!  I’m so glad I’m not the only one this happens too.  Like I said to Perdy, my friends call me comic relief!!  Lol

45-yr-oldvirgin…..Hi!  Thanks for reading my post and sharing your story!  Luckily, this whole adventure was only about ½ hour.  The lock people got there very quickly.  I think I would have run out of gas if I had to wait two hours.  I probably would have done what Polar did and break the window!!!  Lol

Froggie 50….How are you doing?  I haven’t see you for a while!  Yes, it was a total rip off!!!  That pretty much covers everything in Washington, D.C. on a Saturday night!

CW….How are ya?  BOTH sets of keys?  Lol…..oh my!  How did both sets end up in there?  It seems the keys in the car thing happens a lot!!

    :-D  Minnie

Excuse me for saying this but  OMG!!!!! When I had my old car I was ditzy enough to lock myself out of my car several times. Now I have a car with automatic locks and you cant lock yourself out unless you manually lock the car which I don't.
  • minniemouse said on Jul 15, 2007....
Hey princess!  I have auto locks too, but I must have accidentally hit the button when I go out of the car!!!  Sad thing is, I had my window cracked because of the heat, but when I got in and started the car, I put them up.....if I had left them cracked, I could have stuck something in there to put down the automatic window since the car was still running!!  Oh well!!!  Live and learn....and pay a lot for it!!  LOL

    Minnie,
I had put one set of keys in the console and left the other in the ignition.  I knew what I had done the second I shut the car door!  To top it off, it was Friday the 13th.  My co-workers teased me about that one for a very long time.  :-)

ok I'm totally kidding...I never did that :-)

wow thats an expensive mistake!!  I always do stuff like locking my keys in the car or loosing my keys! I keep spare house/car keys with everyone I do it that often :-)

Did you have a good night apart from your expensive ending???

  • minniemouse said on Jul 16, 2007....
Hey Destiny!  I did have a great night....before the key incident!  Got to spend time with my best friend, who I don't see very often, and the best part..........NO KIDS!!!  Love them to death, don't get me wrong....but a Saturday night out on my own....Woo HOO!!  :-)  MM

Don't you think?...
Is that his real reason?...
I made this big thing in class about an event that was happening. Then I find out the professor already emailed us about the event, days before I felt the need to make a public service announcement.

Fuck me. Why does this bother me so much? I...
