Queen ~ Yep I love both of those movies!  I haven't seen Breakfast at Tiffany's in a long long time but I own the other on VHS.  Janeane Garofalo is hilarious :-)

Toe pick!....Ha.........I really enjoyed the movie Cutting Edge, with D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly.  I don't know why it stands out so much for me--except that I could identify with her character breaking down and admitting her weaknesses and faults as she realized she was in love with her skating partner.  It was a beautiful movie with humor, pain, and determination.(and great skating)    And at the end, wow! I wore out my VCR tape rewinding that last few minutes...If you haven't seen it, then I won't say....

i'm not very good at watching romantic movies. but among the few that i saw, the following are standouts:

    • casablanca. why? everything's so perfect -- the cast, the story, the music.
    • breakfast at tiffany's. why? see above.(hey queenie, where'd you get your copy? :-)
    • sleepless in seattle. why? see above.
    • memoirs of a geisha. why? see above. (i saw it a few weekends ago, gotta blog about it soon! i'm swooning over zhang ziyi again...:-)

some say, as good as it gets (helen hunt, jack nicholson). i liked it but not that much.

I like old Jack in just about anything.  What a lovable sleezeball.  And I read once that he was pretty much like that in real life--outdoors in his underwear and peeping into some female star's home next door.  I sort of liked As Good As It Gets, too.  But it's been awhile since I saw it--I can't remember all of it.  I need to watch Breakfast At Tiffany's all the way through.  That and Casablanca.  I can't believe I never have!

I like French Kiss and Ever After, though I'll admit it's hard to not throw in romantic comedies instead.

Ugh, SC went down for maintenance as I was editing my original comment and didn't save all of my changes. :-p

Obviously, FK *is* a romantic comedy, for one thing. And actually, between the two, I'd pick Ever After as the better romance - I mean, it's Cinderella! I love the closing lines, and Drew Barrymore is excellent in this movie. She's just such a cute person, for lack of a better term.

When Harry Met Sally- all-time favorite movie. I love the line at the end where Billy Crystal goes "Because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible".

I think I am going to watch it right now!!!

  • moonriver said on Jul 13, 2007....
queenie -- i currently live and work in the same time zone as yours. think of shanghai, hong kong, taipei, manila, kuala lumpur, singapore. but it does present a dilemma, since if i give you a mailing address i won't be anonymous to you any longer, and vice versa. maybe i'll just get my own copy in the pirate cd emporiums of china ..:-)

destiny -- which version, the original by audrey hepburn, mancini's, or andy williams'? i like hepburn's version best, with mancini's in a close second.

  • destinydiva said on Jul 13, 2007....

I'm a sucker for movie threads, but I tend to avoid romances for a variety of reasons. However, I will add a few titles to the mix:

    Adam's Rib
    To Have and Have Not
    The Lady Eve
    An Affair to Remember
Casablanca (not new here, but it's the best of the best)
    The Goodbye Girl
    A Touch of Class

Wombat ~ I loved Cutting Edge!  That was such a great romantic movie and I loved her attitude lol.

Moonriver ~ I have yet to see Casablanca but the others are great.  I actually just sat down and watched Memoirs of a Geisha a couple of months ago and fell in love with it.

Eilan ~ I haven't seen Shakespear in Love but I've great things about it.

Ed ~ Moulin Rouge was definitely a different kind of love story and the music is amazing.

Ifbno7 ~ Both of those are on my growing list :-)

Infernal ~ Ah two of my favorites!
  • NotSoSinglechick25 said on Jul 13, 2007....
Gentlepie ~ Welcome!  I haven't seen Aeon Flux but I loved the previews and have wanted to see it since it was in the theaters.

Destiny ~ While You Were Sleeping and the Lake House are two of Sandra Bullocks best films IMO.  Have yet to see 13 Going on 30 tho....

Cattemay ~ That is such a sweet line!  I haven't seen that movie all the way through - yet lol.

Lioneljay ~ An affair to remember and The Goodbye Girl are another couple of great ones.  I haven't seen the others at this point.  I can see my list getting steadily longer.

Although I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan, I LOVED Far and Away with TC, and Nicole Kidman.

Total romantic chick flick with a bunch of history, humour, lots of great scenes all rolled into a great movie.

I could watch it over and over again.

OMG,  this is one of the many ways i bond with my lovely daughter, T.  balling our eyes out, in front of our television set, with a blanket and a bowl of popcorn, is what we do best.  here are some of our favorites:

You've got Mail/Sleepless in Seatle - i love the chemistry between meg and tom.  A Lot Like Love - because i truely believe that if it's meant to be, then it will be.  Brown Sugar and Love & Basketball - if you haven't seen it...your missing out.  i do like As Good As It Gets, but not as much as i like, Somethings Got To Give.  Oh and i can't forget...The Notebook- i love ryan gosling!

The truth is...i love a number of movies, but, i think i love the idea of the movie making me cry more than than anything.  does anyone else share my passion for crying, or am i just big cry baby?

  • mobil said on Jul 13, 2007....

So many to choose from, I don't know, I can only name one right?

Last Tango In Paris......that was pretty hot in it's day. if I could pick two. hmm

Driving Miss Daisy......That one was just plain cute.

Honestly, I'm not big on what would be considered "traditional" romantic movies. In fact, I couldn't even tell you the last one I have seen. I'm just not really into them.

However, if picking a romantic movie that's my favorite, I would probably pick one that most people would consider a very non-traditional one and say Princess Bride.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Jul 13, 2007....
Oooh, PB is an awesome movie! I thought about including it in my post, but I think I've nominated it for one of the best everythings everywhere as far as movies go. :-D It cracked me up to see a few lines from the movie used in the MMORPG I play (at one point two NPCs have a conversation including "You mock my pain!" "Life is pain...").

Like some other posters, I don't think I could pick just one. Based on the romantic story line itself... At the top I'd have to pick Before Sunrise and the sequel Before Sunset with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, because they seem to be filmed more or less in "real time" and show the real side of falling in love complete with uncomfortable silences and verbal slip ups and a first argument! But these are all great love stories too -

    Practical Magic
    You've Got Mail
    The Notebook
    Breakfast at Tiffany's
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Celine: I believe if there's any kind of God it wouldn't be in any of us, not you or me but just this little space in between. If there's any kind of magic in this world it must be in the attempt of understanding someone sharing something. I know, it's almost impossible to succeed but who cares really? The answer must be in the attempt.
    Before Sunrise-
