When you make a peanut butter and banana sandwich, do you slice the banana longitudinally (cut the long way) or transversely (in cross section)? Because I am a fan of precision, I prefer the transverse method. This draws on one's skill with a knife, for to be a symmetrical sandwich and not lopsided due to unevenly cut sections, one must make each cut with care so as to result in many sections of virtually equivalent thickness. Precision is an odd component of such a combination of sticky and slippery, and yet that appeals to me more in this sandwich than in almost any other.

And does your tongue take joy in the contrasting stickiness of the peanut butter and the cartoon-image-inducing slipperiness of the banana? This contrast is enhanced, I feel, when one uses smooth peanut butter. For the smooth peanut butter is hardly less oily than the potassium-rich fruit. And so the intellect of your tongue is stretched to imagine that the oily peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth even as the slick banana slice begins to slide past taste buds marked for salt and sour and sweet.

Or do you take the bus?

I can see you need a little more excitement in your life.  Tsk tsk...

I was wondering the other day when I was making a birthday cake for B, if I could bake it in a 9x13 oblong pan, or if I should go with the traditional two-layer configuration.  Oblong is certainly easier, less cleanup, and no risk of one layer sliding off the other in this high humidity.  I went with the tradional configuration and even used homemade chocolate icing made with real butter.

    Happy Nude Week.

    um...i definitely take the bus.

peanut butter is something i mix only with cream cheese or with jelly.

Why, Mimi, happy nude week to you, too.

SW, I never thought of you as being so closed-minded about food (of course, we both know that NY pizza is not really food and so your obsession in that department doesn't count). Have you never tried gado-gado?
  • silverwhisper said on Jul 12, 2007....
you know, i'm not very familiar w/ indonesian cuisine. and btw, chicago-style "pizza" is simply not a pizza; it's a tart.

Boys.  I will have my son settle this debate once and for all as he is in NYC for the next 10 days and is a pizza afficionado.

I am making turkey Italian sausages and peppers and onions for dinner tonight, and can't decide whether to add tomato sauce to the onions and peppers or serve it on the side.  I've been worrying about it all day.
  • lioneljay said on Jul 12, 2007....
Mimi, put the sauce on the side.

Ed, that's the best thing you've ever said about Chicago pizza. Just as a tart is a finer concoction than a pie, so is Chicago pizza finer than New York's. :D

In blonde language, that means "I make little circle shapes with my nanas."
I'm going to give all of you scholarly folks a serious run for your money when it comes to typin' all fancy like...I can see it now! Hehe...

Perdy, you don't have to rely on blonde language here. I'm an equal-opportunity perv and pay attention to redhead and brunette just as well.

The real question is this: how do you react to the texture on your tongue?
  • Eilan said on Jul 12, 2007....
I guess now isn't the time to admit that I've never had a peanut butter and banana sandwich.
  • AlisonMarie19 said on Jul 12, 2007....
You're not alone Eilan. Neither have I. I never cared for the combo myself. My mom, however, does neither.... she mashes the banana.

My mother used to eat them until she got all weird with her eating habits but in addition to peanut butter and bananas, she put Miracle Whip on hers.

I will often spread crunchy peanut butter on bananas or apple slices, but not in a sandwich.

I'm not quite sure what it was that made this post a little sexy to me.... I think i'm either a pervert or took too many meds today! Lmao

I cut them in slices and they have to be the same width...I can not stand uneven banana slices... I'm the same way when I slice them for my cereal though...they all have to be the same width or I have a hard time eating them....not sure why.
  • botoni said on Jul 12, 2007....
Perfectly even slices are mandatory to the esthetic appeal. The slippery banana segment is totally destroyed when there is not uniformity. The Obsessive/compulsive meeting is at my house at 8 pm.

My grandma eats peanut butter and tomato, peanut butter and onion, and peanut butter and pickle sandwiches.  She probably likes peanut butter and banana sandwiches as well.

botoni, please don't open the door until I am finished knocking. I have to knock in three sets of three and I can't function if the door is opened to early and I can't finish....LOL kidding

Eilan...peanut butter and tomato and peanut butter and onion? I've never tried those before...have you? are they good?

No, mirrorimage, I haven't.  My grandma hasn't found anything that, in her opinion, doesn't taste good with peanut butter.  She's braver than I am.

Are you somehow related to Martha Stewart?  Because one day a while back on her show, she was doing something similar about dusting.  When should you dust, before or after you vacuum?  And why?
I like peanut butter and jelly!
  • sweetsoul said on Jul 12, 2007....

Not being one who likes raw bananas I eat my peanut butter sandwich on its own. If you're asking about how I cut them...since the only way I eat bananas is in banana bread, and the bananas are usually frozen, I cut them in 1/2 and put them in the Cuisinart.

As for the bus...I much prefer the subway.

  • lioneljay said on Jul 12, 2007....
Eilan, truth be told, I had my first one today. Your grandmother is slightly more bold with her experimentation than I am as well.

Ali, mashing the bananas would require a separate dish, wouldn't it? I prefer to keep my dishwashing to a minimum so I didn't even think in terms of trying to mash the bananas.

Mimi, I agree: Miiracle Whip on a peanut butter sandwich is decidedly weird.

Mirror, at least you admitted to seeing the hints of perversion that I slid into my post. Everyone else played naive.

Botoni, I'm not sure that cutting one's bananas evenly qualifies as O-C, but I agree that it's an essential step.

Pickers, not even close. I don't dust. I actually prefer peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff, but that's a whole nother blog.

SS, actually I prefer to fly. And I'd heard that about you: that you choose not to eat raw bananas. Well, as Joe E. Brown once said, nobody's perfect. ;)
  • sweetsoul said on Jul 12, 2007....

LJ...no you don't need a separate dish/plate to mash the bananas. You spread the peanut butter onto the bread/toast, slice the bananas and place them on top of the peanut butter, then with a fork, mash the bananas down. That's how my Mom always did it.

I used to love to fly, but frankly the airlines have taken most of the fun out of it. I still do it to get where I want to go, but frankly don't enjoy it as much as before. The subway is on a closer plane to the bus.

Yup...you're right. But I have other redeeming qualities I've been told.

  • lioneljay said on Jul 12, 2007....
I've heard about some of those redeeming qualities, SS. Something about zen, wasn't it? ;)

I'll have to try the mashed banana thing just for the sake of scientific inquiry, of course.

  • Suddenrain said on Jul 13, 2007....

I slice the long way. I'm odd man out I geuss. But I've done it enough years that I've gotten pretty good at doing it evenly. I use Kraft real mayo with it. Never had Bananas with peanut butter in my life.

Another concoction I learned from a babysitter as a kid was to mix peanut butter and Mrs. butterworths syrup together in a bowl. Swirl it up real good and dip fresh bread into it and eat it. Ohhhh its so good. Especially if you warm it in the microwave about 30 seconds before. mmmmmmm   :-P

  • jadestar said on Jul 13, 2007....
Can I add my 2 cents - is it too late? Sorry, I missed the bus. Public Transport not so jacked in SA. And have you ever travelled a mini-bus taxi???? waaay scary - dodging bullets in taxi wars, white knuckles as you clutch & pray that wheels don't come off of this one....but, I digress.......
I've done banana & honey, I've done peanut butter & honey. But never peanut butter AND banana. Way too conservative of a girl.............
  • destinydiva said on Jul 13, 2007....
i dont like to spoil the taste of banana with bread or peanut butter!! I like to eat it whole... hmmmmm  cept I always end up turned on.... ha de ha de ha

    ps I'll take the bus....

Here, we sometimes feed banana trunks to the pigs...... :-))
  • lioneljay said on Jul 13, 2007....
Susmaryosep, the combination of salted fish and peanut butter sounds remarkably unappetizing to me - but it could easily be one of those combinations that tastes much better than one thinks.

Suddenrain, your mixture of syrup and peanut butter sounds intriguing, though it must be extraordinarily high in calories.

Jadestar, perhaps bananas and honey and peanut butter would be a good interim step for you. When you get to the bananas and peanut butter combination, it might actually seem bland without the honey.

Destinydiva, all I did was try something new and then I wrote about it.

Susmaryosep, I didn't know that, but I suppose it only makes sense to get as much use from the plant as possible.

LJ--Face it, Silver is a food snob. ;)

My bananas are cut transversely. And as far as how I handle the texture on my tongue, well, you'd just have to see me eat a peanut butter and banana sandwich to understand. ;)
  • silverwhisper said on Jul 13, 2007....
wait a sec: i'm a food snob? when did that happen?

    ed
  • lioneljay said on Jul 13, 2007....
Z, where do I buy tickets to this exhibition? :p

SW, you're in no danger of being a true food snob so long as you continue to insist that NY pizza is both edible and superior to anything above Cheez-Whiz in the food chain.
  • silverwhisper said on Jul 13, 2007....
ah, but you see LJ, i'm quite correct about NY pizza. that aberration you favor is unclean--unclean, i say!

  • lioneljay said on Jul 13, 2007....
What, you're seeing cloven hooves in my pizza now? You might want to get those specs checked out, pal.
  • silverwhisper said on Jul 13, 2007....
nay, sir: the cloven hooves are imprinted on the very crust of that unnatural thing!

    ed
  • lioneljay said on Jul 13, 2007....
Well, at least it has a crust. That which you besmirch the word by calling it "pizza" is barely supported by a limp cracker. Oh wait, I just got a flash of inspiration. NY pizza is where the rock group Limp Biscuit (sic, so what!) must have gotten the inspiration for their name. :D

I take the tram and then transfer to the subway.  I find that standing... on both the tram and the subway.... allows me to earn brownie points with the elders as well as relieve the stress on my hemorrhoids.  I eat lunch at Subway, but I sit down for that.  It seems that the sharply contrasting flavors of the jalapeno peppers and the horsey sauce take my mind off the roids long enough to take a load off.

Do you think I should switch to a Mac?
  • lioneljay said on Jul 13, 2007....
Kruuyai, I'd lay off the Macs if I were you - for any number of reasons. Subway does a good sandwich imho. I often get the veggie burger sub with hot giardinera.
