Last weekend my brother in-law got married to a girl he met on an online dating site, not sure if I can say which one? The "older", perhaps wiser and more conservative members of the family of course had their doubts about the nature in which they met at first, and maybe still do. But he's so happy and in love...it's written all over his face :)  He's 37 years old and this is his first (and hopefully only) marriage. He said he had begun to do some serious praying about finding someone to share his life with because he was so lonely. He started seeing ads and commercials for this site over and over again, and saw it as a sign. Joined the site, met her and the rest is history. The wedding was beautiful, and just seeing how happy he is was just  so heartwarming.

All this got me thinking though... about online dating and how many people out there either know of someone who has dated, even married someone they met online or dated someone online themselves. Have you ever? Would you?  I'm sure we've all heard our share of scarey stories about meeting people online, so I just thought I'd share a happy story with you :)

But I'm curious....have you or would you ever do it yourself? Why or why not?

I know someone who married the man she met online. They're very happy together.

I dated one person I met online for about eight months. We never got to the face-to-face meeting point (living on different continents with hectic schedules made that prohibitive, and I was more than a little hesitant), but we shared letters, long phone calls, and many late nights online. He wasn't the one, but it wasn't a bad relationship.

    It can work.

my family has a lot of experience with relationships that began online.  my son met a girl in a chat room and ended up being together with her and having a baby together.  she's nuts though, so don't go by that.

my older daughter met a guy in a chat room and went to england to live with him for years.  she broke off their engagement but they remain best friends.  in fact, he is visiting her now, here in the usa.  he's nuts though, so don't go by that.

the same daughter did eharmony and met a guy recently who has a normal job and seems normal enough.  too soon to tell.

my younger daughter met a guy in a chat room, never met him, but loved him from a distance.  i consider the relationship meaningless because they never met, and you put your best foot forward online, and she overrated him.

i met someone in a chat room and fell in love with her.  never met her, never will.  i have my life, she has hers.

i was missing her very much, and my wife suggested that i stop being sad and join an online penpal club.   so i did.  i thought i was arguing with a woman in the penpal club, but next thing you know, she's telling me she loves me.  she came here to meet me, and she jumped right on top of me and used me like a toy she bought at toys r us.  that was all kinds of fun.  it served my wife right because it was the first time i ever cheated on her, but she cheated on me plenty.  i'm glad it happened.  The online girl wanted to marry me but it didn't seem right for that.

i also made a good friendship online with a lesbian girl.  i still consider her a good friend.  if i was more of a phone person i'd talk to her more frequently.

I have met guys online but only dated one and it didn't turn out all too great.  I like meeting the guy face to face.  It doesn't seem natural to me.

I don't know how you can "date" someone online without meeting them.

I have met guys from online and thru the phone chat. Other than the obvious precautions you should take, I don't think that there is too much of a difference meeting this way or in a bar. Or grocery store, church or whatever. To me, I look at it as I got to know you first, instead judging your appearance first. Sometime that can be a good foundation....

ps...I think you have to be weary of weirdos.....but look at it this way....for thousands of years...some people lived their lives just making do ....never finding their true soulmate...hey if your soulmate happens to live in England and you live in Afgahnistan what are the chances of bumping in to each other??  With the www....  that chance becomes more viable....... tho it also means weaning out more weirdos in the process!!!!

pps mr7 that was very interesting reading :-)
