This post is not aimed at those of you fortunate enough (or unfortunate enough, in some regards) to be living in the Eastern time zone. For you, NBC has decided that you're worthy of seeing Wimbledon played live. For others such as myself, NBC gives us the middle finger. You see, NBC in its infinite wisdom has decided that they will show Wimbledon live here in the U.S., but only on the East Coast. Everyone in the Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones are treated to tape-delayed tennis, which is extremely exciting....
I am a huge sports fan, I watch basically all major professional sports (even golf, call me crazy), but the one thing that I cannot stand is watching any sporting event tape-delayed. Yes, I understand that almost all sports are tape-delayed now for censorship reasons, but there is a huge difference between a 5 second delay and a 1-3 hour delay. I won't even record a sporting event and watch it later, because I know that it's already over, and even if it's not possible anyway, you just no longer feel like you're participating in the event if you're not seeing it live.
NBC as a network is already having serious ratings problems, so I don't see why they feel it's a good idea to antagonize the small sports-watching market share they have by catering only to the East coast and force-feeding everyone else a delay. Do they not realize that there are about a million ways a person can find out the score online and thus not have to sit through the delay? Not to mention the fact that you aren't treated to one single match on TV, but you are subjected to jumping from match to match, letting you see at best 1/3 of the match that you are most interested in.
It is my sincere hope that NBC will discover the folly of their ways (which is unlikely because they've been showing Wimbledon this same way for years) and give the entire U.S. live coverage.
