You know Chess is a very romantic concept for a lot of people.  It's a simple game with good and evil, there are kings, queens, priests, knights and castles.  Certainly not to be forgotten is the common man the pawn.  Not a single one of these peices have inteligence, they have parameters, what they can do and what they cannot do and there is no point in wishing that a rook can move diagonally or that a queen can jump.

The real fun of course is the game itself, even though the pawn is considered the weakest piece by many people it is vital to any strategy.  With the proper care it can become anything it's controller wants, a knight, a bishop, even a queen.  It's in control though, not even then and the player is the really the one who accomplished something when a pawn becomes topples a knight to become one himself.

There is nothing that happens without a purpose in chess either, there are sacrifices, there are strategies and fun is had by all.  I imagine that it must be nice to be a chess peice, to have no responsibilities of your own.  To know that everything that is, has or shall happen is part of a grand plan that you are too short sighted to even comprehend.

As romantic as Chess is though I'm not a pawn, I'm a man.  So is each and every person reading this but many of you prefer to be pawns and I pity you.  I know better than to hope but I wish my words would get through to the pawns, knights, rooks, bishops, kings and queens and turn them into men because there is no grand plan.  There is what we make and we can't do it alone.

Thanks.  You know it's weird I never expect you to agree with me on these kinds of things because I always expect you to be a radical right wing religious zealot.  Now before you get all mad about something you have or haven't written it's because you name.  I know your name is Paid in Blood.  Thing is the geek in me keep reading Palidin Blood.  Stupid Dungeons and Dragons.

Great post Sean.  I used to enjoy chess quite a bit.  Back in the day, I was quite good.  The thing about chess is the more you play, the better you get.  Ever play Chinese chess?  The king's confined to the bottom center squares and has two retainers to protect him.  It's a cool game.  You should look into it if you haven't seen it yet.

I think I played Chinese Chess once, I used to like the game.  It's one of those things that like you said the more you play the better you get.  Which made it really annoying for me personally when I started finding new people to play with and was getting trounced repeatedly.  I don't mind loosing but this was bad, like he'd find ways of tricking me into variations of the three move checkmate.  Eventually it was like, yeah fuck this.

I love chess......and I once came up with a theory very similar to yours....
i agree whole heartedly.....and I'm most defo not a pawn anymore....yet I spent a lot of my life unhappily being a pawn..... I say pawn....because thats the one where I get to become whatever someone else wants me to become....if they manipulated me the right way......and I was certainly heading for a someone elses me.......  then I woke up...and decided I'd been a pawn for too long..... I love reading things in this kinda context......  so much insight.....explained through a concept we can understand......I think your words might just get through to the pawns.... :-)

SR: fabulous stuff - great post.

Chess has always been an excellent mental stimulant, especially when playing against a chess computer - you can set any player level to correspond with whether or not you want to feel humbled/challenged, you want to erase your sadness/arrogance, or you just want to try out moves that seem new.

With one on one play with another human being, the game gets boring when a pattern is set - some players just can't seem to be beaten by others on any given day!

The lesson, as you rightly pointed out, IMHO, is that how we live our lives depends entirely on what we choose/decide to do -  no matter  whose ox is  gored.
