it's a relatively easy question folks...

what's your favorite cereal? if you don't have an ultimate favorite, what are your favorites? are there any you avoid at all costs?

I'm a definite Shreddies fan, although I don't eat cereal much.  I have have been known to take shredded wheat, pour boiling water on them, drain the water off and then add milk.  Makes kind of a hot wheat mush.  Sounds gross but tastes great.

I have a box of cereal on the shelf called kashi go lean.  It's like eating styrofoam packing peanuts.  Awful.

I don't eat cereal very often but my favorites are Cheerios and Special K.

Big cereal fan here! My all time favorite is captain crunch....that's right i said captain crunch! preferably with crunch berries....but I never eat it anymore :( I try to eat healthier cereal with lots of fiber....raisin bran....shredded wheat....grape nuts....but occasionally, I will treat myself to the captain!

I like most cereal out there but hands down my favorite is fruity pebbles. Have loved em since I was a kid sitting in front of the tv watching cartoons.

This is probably terrible but I love frosted flakes, cocoa pepples, and captain crunch.  Wow, it's been a long time since I've had some cereal.  Maybe a box of captain is in order.....

I'd prefer something quick for breakfast like a  Nutrigrain bar, I like oatmeal so those oatmeal cereals are my favorite, don't remember what it is called. I like the ones with raisins too.
  • Expendable said on Jun 30, 2007....

Granola. Mmmm. I really like the ones with bits of fruit but I don't mind putting in my own banana slices.

  • botoni said on Jun 30, 2007....

  • evil_twin said on Jun 30, 2007....
I love Honey Bunches of Oats! And I feel like I'm a grown up eating it, as opposed to eating Fruit Loops (which I also love).

Hi, It's a tie between shredded wheat and granola, but we haven't had shredded wheat for years. When we eat cereal it's usually a snack, breakfast tends to be tea and maybe homemade soy yogurt.
  • sweetsoul said on Jun 30, 2007....

It's a toss up between Shredded Wheat (no hot water poured over it please) and Cheerios - the regular kind.

Mimi...I don't buy it often but I love Kashi cereal. Not sure what kind it is though.

I have been eating healthier in my old age. I prefer Raisin Bran these days, its good for my heart and keeps me "regular". At least that is what the box claims. When i was a kid i really enjoyed coco pebbles, or maybe i just really enjoyed slirping down that incredibly "chocolatey" milk after i was done with the cereal itself. I also liked Lucky Charms in my youth, it was a job to eat the flavorless "pellets", but eating those "pellets" made me truly appreciate the marshmallows that i had left for last. I thought of the wonderfully delicious "blue moons", and green clovers" as my paycheck for the "hard labor" that i had just put in...

I'm the king of cereal, folks.

CW, it's not the carb, it's the fiber. If the fiber content is 3 grams or more you can get away with it...5 and you're golden. Puffed whole grains with no sugar like Kashi 7 grain don't count. They have less than 3 but are so low cal that the fiber they have is still a good balance.

MissMimi, GoLean is pretty nasty. You'll need to partner that stuff with a tasty cereal to choke it down.

Combining cereals is the best way to get a good diet going. Mix a sugarless grain cereal with a favorite cereal of the same grain. Dilute your Lucky Charms with as much Cheerios as you can stand and still enjoy yourself. As a bonus, mix in Trader Joe's FiberO's instead for powerful morning food.

Mix puffed corn of Barbara's Puffins (found in the health food section with your Golden Grahams or Captain Crunch (which are primarily fiberless corn meal)

GoLean Crunch is just like Granola but higher in fiber. It's too sweet on its own. Mix it with Shredded Wheat w/Bran for a good recipe.

Kashi 7 grain goes with almost anything, but Post Great Grains is a recommended partner for Kashi.

Finally, Raisin Bran typically contains a surprising amount of sugar coating the raisins and mixed into the flakes. Add Uncle Sam cereal to lower tech sugar content without losing the fiber benefit.

If you like Total, and you can find it, try Trader Joe's Heritage Flakes. Their Flax Plus flakes are nearly as good. TJ's has tons of novel cereals with good fiber content and they introduce new ones all the time. You should see my pantry.

did you ever put crackers, broken up, into scrambled eggs?  like ritz crackers.  my wife cooks that for us.  then there's french toast.
  • Eilan said on Jun 30, 2007....
I'm weird.  Kashi GoLean is one of my favorites.  I also like Frosted Vanilla Mini-Wheats.

My current favorite is Rice Krispies with Strawberries.
  • MissMimi said on Jun 30, 2007....
Eilan, I'll send you my box.  Now I like kashi go lean crunch but that's a different kind.
  • fracture said on Jun 30, 2007....
Grape Nuts, hands down. I couldn't say why. They are like chewing little pebbles, but I love em.
    ;0)
    fun question
  • Eilan said on Jun 30, 2007....
Mimi, sometimes I mix it up in yogurt.

I'm weird about cereal.  Most of the time I eat cereal dry as a finger-food snack.  I don't ever drink the milk that's left over after the cereal's gone.  Disgusting.

Anything with bits of fruit, nuts, coconut--whatever--in it.  And Raisin Bran.  I don't think anyone has mentioned how outrageous the cost of cereal has gone up, (unless I overlooked it)  I am a stingy shopper and I sometimes just get the off-brand cheapest stuff, like store-brand raisin bran, when my eye is on the $4.99 box about the size of a  notebook.

  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 30, 2007....
Ed- I've never met anyone who didn't like any kind of breakfast cereal so I'd have to say yes, that's at least a little weird.

You are a foodie, remember?- think of all the things one can put into cereal.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Jun 30, 2007....
I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but Honey Bunches of Oats w/almonds is good, too.

Zayda, I have a story for this one.

In my final year of school, my biology class of six went on a school trip. We were so excited: it had been years since we had travelled away and stayed somewhere strange, all together.

Our teacher was bringing our food, and was enquiring about what breakfast we would like. He asked about a suitable cereal: we all, in a half second, nodded great big yes-es to Coco Pops.

He started to laugh. He told us that the night prior to his class, he had asked his wife for suggestions. She had said Coco Pops, to which he responded: "Darling, they are eighteen years old!"

Yes, we were. But we wanted them still!

Zen 'Perfect Balance' Cranberry and Ginger cereal.  Has little wheat in it and is made from raw brown sugars, millet, honey, soy and nuts.
  • Suddenrain said on Jul 25, 2007....

I'm not a breakfast person, but if I do eat it, it's oatmeal in the winter months and rice krispies or corn pops or crispix in the summer months.
