Inspired by the wonderful MissMimi's post about her new tattoo I find my mind wandering to  tattoos and whether that is something I could explore myself.

I've toyed with the idea a few times in the past and have many friends with tats some of them gorgeous, some less so and some that make me wince but haven't ever gone through with it. Probably 'cos DH is anti them in a very big way and my mother, well she definitely wouldn't approve. Added to which it doesn't really fit with the professional image I have to present at work. Having said that tats don't have to be where they are easily seen...

Now, I'm not making any commitment to getting a tattoo done and tbh I'm almost certainly far too cowardly to do it but what kind of tat do you think would suit me? And if you don't think one would why not? And if you think they are violations of the body then I'd like to hear that too with an explanation of why.

    hey Alyss~~
I don't know you well enough to say if a tat would suit you
or not, but just wanted to say, I love mine. I got it like
7 years ago, after going back & forth with it for a long time.
These days, tats aren't just for bikers anymore. And there are
lots of tasteful designs, and places on your body to put them
if they can't show at work.
Also, there is a special concealing make-up you may use to
cover them for certain occasions when they might not be
appropriate (for instance, my friend had a really beautiful
tattoo of a fairy on her left back shoulder area. She was
going to be a bridesmaid, and the dress she was to wear
would really show the tattoo, so she just concealed it for
    the day.)
You mom not approving is another story!!! Yikes!!
    Good Luck

you know who you should ask, alyss. :>

you are in the process of bringing your external and internal lives in sync, and i can easily see how this might represent a symbolic capstone of that process.

You know Alyss, personally I don't think it's for someone else to say what kind of tattoo would suit you. That is something you have to determine for yourself.

A tattoo, the choice and selection of the design, the placement of the tattoo is something very personal. So it's not for me to say whether a tattoo would suit you or not.

I can say that if you wanted to get one to represent a certain aspect of your life, or to symbolize an event or a change, then I think I know you well enough to say that you would get a tattoo that you think best fit that aspect of your life or best symbolized that event.

I have a feeling you would pic the tattoo that bests suits you because you would research the meanings of particular signs and symbols and what they represent.

I personally have a tattoo. When I got it, it didn't really symbolize much of anything except breaking out of a shell I had been in. Well the act of getting the tattoo represented that. But it came to represent so much more. So, no, I don't think they are a violation of the body.

They're right about tattoos being highly personal, so it should be your choice.  I wouldn't get one until you have a really specific idea about what you want and where.

I have one, and it does have personal meaning to it.  I have it where it's easily concealed and unlikely to suffer too much from old age.  I'm even considering adding to it now that I have reached another milestone.

What kind? If you want my opinion....I'd say a nice butterfly, the change of from what you were to what you will be....

I'd say go for it, especially in light that all the folks that dont like it in your life....

alyss.. hi... i think its okay to have a tattoo even if you are an office person, i mean you can have it in discreet location right? and the kind of tattoo for you should be something that goes with your personality and since its permanent it has to be something that you really really like... so as not to have regrets about it later on...

one thing to consider.....get a piece of silly putty....smash it down on the sunday funnies in the newspaper....stretch it....and then think about where exactly you want something that looks like that in 30 years! ;p
  • MissMimi said on Jun 29, 2007....

Well, Alyss, do it only if YOU want to.  And I agree with carm on this.  Part of me really hopes you get one precisely because of the ones in your life who disapprove.  (How very passive aggressive of me.)

I think a tattoo would suit you just fine, but the only person whose opinion matters is you.  As far as the pain goes...  If you want to get all symbolic about it, if you get a tat to honor the rebirth of your spirit and the start of your new life, think about the fact that every "birth" comes with pain.  And the pain isn't so bad honest.

When I met my bride, she had two tattoos; a rose
on one shoulder and a butterfly on the other.
She was a school teacher and kept them hidden
so you only saw them when she had her shirt off.
Tattoos are the fad but like everyone said,
"They are forever" so really think about..

Alyss~ I enjoy my body art very much. But it isn't for everyone. If you do it, it should be for you. It should be something yo will enjoy looking at for the rest of your life. Something personal.
For YOU. I think something like a single modest calla lily. They look so delicate and yet even the petals are strong and vibrant. Through every stage of their life they are beautiful.
    Like you.
  • Alyss said on Jun 29, 2007....
I am considering it, just as I have done before and not gone through with it, but I don't think that now is the right time for it. Maybe something for once everything is finalised.

I understand the symbolism of the butterfly but it doesn't quite fit somehow. And the lily, it's a beautiful thought for which I thank you but again it isn't quite me.

The idea that I've been toying with is something Celtic and tree related ( I have a strong affinity for trees & things Celtic) so maybe something like this.

I got mine three weeks ago to treat myself for my birthday on the nape of my neck under my hair. Still professional, but I can show it off on weekends with my hair pulled up. Although I would make minor changes later once it's fully healed, I too love my tat -- Only one, modest, discreet, but symbolic of my soul.

Here is an impromptu poem I wrote about it in my blog: Inked

    Enjoy.

Ooh, Alyss, very nice!  I like that very much. :)
  • Zayda said on Jun 29, 2007....
Oh, Alyss, I really like that. It's very delicate looking but it's also very strong at the same time.
  • carmachu said on Jun 29, 2007....
    You asked for suggestions....*shrug*

Quite fitting.....I would say. Your design I mean.

Aw Carm it was a good suggestion, it really was and I thank you for it. I have just never thought of myself as a butterfly is all.

I'm much more like that gnarled, wrinkled tree.
  • mommyof2 said on Jul 03, 2007....
If you get it in a fatty area and not boney area it will not hurt as bad, yes they do fade but it's something you have to maintain, they can fix it, just costs like everything in this world.....we need to talk cuz I need your advice too.
  • Alyss said on Jul 03, 2007....
Maybe I will, maybe I won't but I think not yet is the decision I've made about it. Too many things happening right now and I don't want to make a mistake about it!

mommyof2 am on my way over right now...

The topic of tattoos came up again this weekend and I am still thinking about it. I still very much like the celtic tree and the suggestion of a butterfly has appeal also. ;-)
  • silverwhisper said on Jul 14, 2008....
have you given more thought to location?

    ed
  • Alyss said on Jul 14, 2008....
Yes. Can't be anywhere it couldn't easily be covered for work. It can't be placed anywhere near my surgery scars 'cos realistically there might be more scars ahead.

And I'd prefer it to be where I can see it myself.

Not got much further than that. ;-)

The celtic tree of life could be done in such a way as the branches could form a butterfly. That would be beautiful, complicated and essential. Just like you.
