In 1974 I was assigned to the 8th Air Force in Guam. The flag had been struck in Vietnam and all the assigned people were returned to the theater after it was determined it had served its purpose.

I was very fortunate to meet and talk to Major general Kelly who was in command at the time. Our conversations were wide ranging and informative.

He had been a pilot of a B-17 over Germany. His missions exceeded the 25 necessary for rotation back to the states. He stayed on because of the heavy losses sustained by the "Bombardment" wing. He was a large man and imposing but his demeanor was very inviting and cordial. This from a man with more on his plate than any individual should have had.

I wish I'd have had the time to talk more and to talk with people like Curtis Le May when he was at Forbes Field in Topeka Kansas. SAC was his baby and he never forgot what a value the B-47's and KC-97s were.

I have me many people that I wish I could have spent more time with. Brig . General Patrick Halloran. SAC.

Mostly it was General Schwarzkopf... I have misspelled his name because I never did learn to spell it. I spent 45 minutes with him in a single room and no one knew who he was. He lives in Telluride, Colo and was on  his way there after a speaking engagement in Montreal, Canada. He talked to me like I was a long lost buddy. He was warm and inviting.

I'm lucky that my jobs took me in the proximity of many people like that. The Smothers brothers. (that's a LONG story). Phil Michelson and many more. Most were very nice with the exception of Tommy Smothers.

Oh well...more laters..JD

They crossed the border at Rainbow bridge at 0300 in the morning. It was a wet and shitty night. The bus came to a stop..I boarded the bus for a routine inspection. When I talked to the driver he told me to keep it down as "they" were sleeping.

I asked him if he "knew" where he was. He appeared groggy and smelled like booze. Turned out NOT to be though but I thought then I'd have a look through the buss.

Well don't you know Tommy came apart at the seams demanding to know why he was being awakened etc . Well bad went to worse and  I dumped the entire bus out.

Tommy never shut up all the time three of us went through that bus. It was probably 5 AM before it was allowed to proceed. Tommy was still cussing an hour later. Oh well. They wanted my badge number..so I gave it to him..1789..It was on all our badges. It was the year Customs was initiated.

Over the years hundred upon hundreds of complaints were made against badge number 1789. The number was never activated because of that reason.

Hey Cops...... here's one for you; I was working for one of the Air carriers at the time, it was early morning & I was standing with several of the young ladies working the boarding area at Washington National Airport. Paul Lynn the comedian had just walked up with a few of his people. The girl next to me almost wet her pants, she thought he was the greatest thing since Elvis. Well she when up to him to get his autograph & low& behold he called her every dirty name a person could think of without looking up more in a dictionary. The poor girl was in tears, as for me, well I've had to deal with alot of celebrities & they cover the spectrim fom nice to total assholes, just like the real world. Take care BST
