Here's something light and fun.  I ran across this article on theater concession stands and found it interesting.  I am a sucker for popcorn, despite the outrageous price, and have been known to make an entire meal out of my finds inside the theater.  I even try to catch my movies at the local theater that serves mochas at their concession stand.

What are your 3 most favorite munchies when you go to the movies?

Mine are kettle corn, red vines and soda.

Let's see...popcorn, of course. Lots of butter. Hot Tamales. And a Coke usually. But normally, I don't get popcorn AND candy. It's either/or, but you asked for three :-)

ET - I don't always do both either, but every now and then I get a hankering for some redvines ;)
  • NotSoSinglechick25 said on Jun 27, 2007....
Popcorn - extra butter (yum!) and of course with salty popcorn you gotta have a soda (since they are hand in hand that should count as one! but since I don't have more than three....), and goobers or sour patch straw thingies.  Now, keep in mind that I have to take the candy home cuz I can't have candy and popcorn but it somehow tastes better when bought at a ridiculously high price at the theater.  I haven't heard of them selling mochas!  I'd love that but it wouldn't go great with popcorn :-P

NSSC - Yeah, I take my candy home too, since I paid gold bullion prices for it.  The local theater has mochas, ice cream and italian pastries which I'm sure is not typical in most theaters, but it is california.
  • blastfromthepast said on Jun 27, 2007....
I love Cherry Blasters, M&M's Peanuts, and soda.  And we're so damned cheap that we usually buy them elsewhere and smuggle them in!  Mochas?  Ice cream?  Italian pastries?  Only in California!
  • darklydreaming said on Jun 27, 2007....
I don't eat anything at theaters, way to expensive. I usually bring my own drink when they let you in with one, depending on the theater.
  • secretlife said on Jun 27, 2007....
    popcorn...buttered, cherry icee's, and raisinettes..
costs a fortune to take 5 to the movies and buy this stuff.
i usually leave them my debit card.

I don't eat anything when I'm at the movies.  If I eat, I get thirsty, and if I drink, I have to use the bathroom.  I don't like missing part of the movie to pee.
  • mobil said on Jun 27, 2007....

popcorn and a pop, I get so mad at the movie houses advertizing on the

big screen after paying a fortune for tickets. I used to stand up and boo

the screen. Wife didn't like that, but yes, I just go for the popcorn and pop.

  • Zayda said on Jun 27, 2007....
Popcorn and a drink. Sometimes we get M&Ms and they get poured into the popcorn.
  • mom said on Jun 27, 2007....
Well, if I go to the movies, I usually have at least one child with me and they get the food.  At some point though I usually beg for something.  I did come up with a way to enjoy treats at the theater.  I buy the kids nachos, they give me their cheese dip.  I dip my toes in the cheese sauce and then bites my toe nails. It takes a while to get used to the taste, it is like the difference between egg beaters and real eggs. The important thing is to stick just my toes and not involve someone else's feet.
  • sweet_cookie01 said on Jun 27, 2007....
popcorn... i know this is weird but also like gummis and nuts then ofcourse soda!
  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 28, 2007....
unique- My wife gets popcorn and a drink. I eat a small amount of hers and a sip of the drink. Thats about all I usually want. We used to go to movies at the mall and they had a store 50 feet from the movie with all kinds of goodies. We would stock up and put it in her purse before going into the movie.
  • beyondtheveil said on Jun 28, 2007....
    unique- What are redvines?
  • silverwhisper said on Jun 28, 2007....
i'm jealous--you get kettle corn at your theater?!

me, i'm a basic kinda guy that way: popcorn with salt & butter and a diet coke.

during the summer, sometimes an icee, but i go through those really fast, so they're only really good for an animated movie. :>

  • mom said on Jun 28, 2007....
beyond- redvines are red licorice whips
  • missb said on Jun 28, 2007....
Hmmm, don't usually eat in the movies. But if i do, it's usually popcorn or some "risoles". Dunno what it's called in english :/

As for drinking, i'm like Eilan. I always try not to drink so i don't have to go to the toilet during the movie.

    Cheers!

I love the combo..popcorn and plain m&ms and of

course a coke...I agree it's pricey and also hate to miss the movie to pee.

  • juliegoldylocks said on Jun 28, 2007....
I like M &M's and a soft drink and Doritos.... haven't had any for ages.
I have never heard of some of the things you guys have what are Kettle corn ?
    I'm in Australia.

  • evil_twin said on Jun 28, 2007....
So they don't serve mochas in all the theaters? I guess maybe that is a California thing. We can get mochas everywhere. Our movie theater has fancy sandwiches on croissant rolls too.

where we live there is a $1 (or so theater) - can get in for a buck before 6pm and $1.50 after...oof course it is not first run but we often wait for the movies to go there so we can afford to see the movie and load up on the junk.  I gotta have popcorn, diet coke and rasinets.  I will DIE FOR raisinets at a movie - even have my littlest one addicted to them!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jun 28, 2007....

Blast - I've never heard of a Cherry Blaster, what is that?  And yes, california is "special" that way.

Darkly - I wish I had that kind of discipline

SL - Love the icees, but you have to be careful not to get brain freeze. Ow!

Eilan - I hear ya!  I usually sit on the end of the row for just that reason.

mobil - you really got up and booed?  LOL

Zayda - Don't they kind of filter to the bottom of the bag that way?

mom - LOL I want pictures of that.

sweet cookie - doesn't sound weird at all.

BTV - The big purse trick is wonderful.  Redvines are red licorice usually all stuck together in a square.

SW - You have to pick your theater, but most of them here do have it.

    missb - what's in a resoles?

mommyof2 - with all the small bladders on SC I wouldn't be surprised if some of us have bumped into each other while making a pit stop in the ladies room.

julie - kettle corn is salty popcorn with a thin glaze of sugar and light butter.  Sounds gross, but ummmmmm.

ET - it must be a california thing.  It's really a different world out here.

SW - I'd be surprised if at least Seattle didn't have a Starbucks in the theater

OnAgain - We had one of those cheap theaters with old movies here for about $3, but it went out of business.  I'm not sure why, they seemed busy, but sadly I have to pay the rip off rates of $10-12 here.

I smuggle in cheesy popcorn, soda, water, and sometimes reeses pieces. I never leave any garbage there though, that would just be rude!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jun 28, 2007....
    FTR - ummmm, cheesy popcorn
  • OnAgainTonight said on Jun 28, 2007....
oh but this is a NICE movie theater!  not old and crappy looking.  it's partly because it is a small town that has like 5 or 6 colleges in a 20 mile radius...you know the whole broke college student thing! :)  Playing now are  Blades of Glory, Disturbia, Wild Hogs - there's usually a pretty good selection and generally a kiddie movie or two to take the young'uns to as well.  We go to see first runs once in a while - usually the latest Pixar movie!  But with 2 kids, it makes it much more afforable to go to the cheap theater and then eat like kings from the concession stand simply because the tickets were a buck! :)
  • boyzmom said on Jun 28, 2007....
U-I: I was just complaining that the matinee rates here were $6.75 for adult and $6.00 for the kids and you pay $10! OMG how can people afford to go to the movies?  Last movie I went to was just this week and we saw Fantastic Four, my ex wanted to take the kids and he doesn't drive so I had to take them and he had to take me to the movie also! We had a big popcorn for all of us to share, the kids shared some skittles, we each had a drink- I went with iced tea and the kids had hi-c, and my ex had nachos and pretzels. Usually I would have had something like m&ms or raisinettes though.
  • princessbitch65 said on Jun 28, 2007....
I usually get popcorn. I stop getting soda ( or any beverage for that matter) because I always have end up going to the bathroom at a crucial part of the movie. Stupid bladder!
  • evil_twin said on Jun 28, 2007....
The last time I went to the movies, it was $11 a piece. A large popcorn was $6.50, large sodas, $5.50 a piece. It's insane. I usually just wait for the DVD's these days. It's fine to pay a lot if the movie is really good, but most of the time, I'm disappointed. And for the price you paid for two tickets, you could have bought the movie a few months later!

e_t: I hear you about prices. The hubby has a summer schedule at work where they only actually work half a day on Fridays but go in earlier the rest of the week. So, we have taken to taking in matinées. That at least cuts down on the ticket price, but the price of everything else is still expensive. We do a great deal of waiting on DVDs to come out and just buying the DVD as well.
  • blastfromthepast said on Jun 28, 2007....
Unique:  Cherry Blasters are hard to describe.  They're chewy, like Jube Jubes, and have a kind of sour taste that changes to sweet.  They really get the saliva going, that's for sure!
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jun 29, 2007....
OnAgain - wow, that really sounds nice.  You're very lucky

Boyzmom - Yeah, it's a major investment to go to the movies with the kids.  Sound like you "painted the town red" though.

Princess - You're in the majority here with cutting the liquids.

ET - I'm the same mind set (wait til it's on DVD), but my BF considers a friday night movie a ritual of some sort.

Zayda - What a cool work schedule!

BFTP - Oh!  The kids eat something like that from time to time.  I tend not to since drooling is so not attractive.
  • CreativeWoman said on Jun 30, 2007....
I have a small popcorn and a Diet Pepsi.  I sneak in some sugar free chocolate in my purse if I'm in the mood for candy.
