I recently caught the show over in the Artemis thread. She asked a question, got a few serious answers and then got attacked by the sad and pathetic bottomfeeders that are required to exist to make us appreciate that not everyone is like that.

I found the irony of someone FALSELY accusing Artemis of being someone else in hiding, while using MULTIPLE extra accounts galling in the extreme. Also, attacking a rape survivor using a handle like WoomRaider is disgusting. That's not clever. That is vile and cruel.

Silverwhisper does not have time to be anyone else, btw. Unlike those who attack him.
He actively reads more people than most of us even acknowledge. Daily. As well as doing his job and haunting other forums.

I don't understand why people have to be so hateful. I really don't.

LG....I ve not yet seen the post you re referring to here but I agree whole heartedly with you sentiments. My SC time is meant to relax me and drama dont do it!

Hi LG - I actually just got done over there and I gotta I'm pretty disgusted by the whole thing.  She's decided to leave SC and I don't blame her, evertime I run into the bottom feeders on another post, btw they never have anything good to say have you notice, I consider just packing it in myself.  Who needs that kind of agrivation?  Botoni is right, it's all about relaxation.

You know, part of me is sorry that I responded to the bottom feeders, but as a rape survivor myself, I simply do not have it in me to stand for that kind of crap.

I'm tired of it.  I looked at that post tonight, and I'm sorry I did.  I have no idea what else to say because it just disgusts me.

I just finished reading the thread in question after having ignored it as soon as the attacks began. I'm not quite sure what motivates such people to behave that way, but it's revolting. That the argument devolved into a discussion of alts by alts was ironic but not funny. I'm >< this close to disappearing from SC myself. There doesn't seem to be much for me to say (that's my thing and has nothing to do with SC) and lately there's been more than enough crap like this to make it easy for me to stay away.

Too bad, really. I like online communities when they remain mostly civil.
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Jun 26, 2007....
It's been a while since I've been that thoroughly disgusted. I can't find anything coherent to say about it, and I already spoke to Art, so I'm going to just try to sandblast those words out of my mind and hope that the revolting "people" who get off on that crap either fall into an abyss or by some miracle eventually become decent human beings.

In my foolish curiostity I went and read. What terrible drivel is spewed in that post! I feel awful for Artemis. I m not leaving yet but I ve cut back on posting as often as I have in the past partly because that kind of stuff makes SC a less pleasant place to me.
  • Zayda said on Jun 26, 2007....
Simple, Eilan, the apologists will say, but they (he) hasn't done anything to me personally, just as they have in the past.

You all, each and every one of you, wanted this community, to be wide open, unrestricted and uncensored.  Well, its a two way street.

When I first joined, I came to lov this community, support it, protect it. When some jerk started masturbating for our jr. soul cast members, children visiting, schools and libraries where children used to enjoy SC.... I confronted him, remember ?

Each and everyone of your names above are listed on his site in support of porn.
Each of you have attacked me, repeatedly.

Remember, the first female attack on me came from Zayduh, kinda blind sided me too, ya know, from behind.  I didn't even know what a Zayduh was then.

The first male to attack me was, Silverwhisper.  This because I answered a post,
{ ironically it was not even SW's post} the question:  What do you find sexy ?  I simply said....I find those of my own race sexy, white.

SW jumped like a rabid bitten animal on me, calling me foul names, trying to intimidate me.....good luck w/ that.....anyways  you all started on me, until that moment, I had never uttered a bad word to anyone.

Then TNP...you all know this is a project in the works for me, pet project if you will.

Anyways, you all wanted this place wide open.  Well its a two way street...and guess what....not everybody is driving the same car, or shopping for the same things, but thats fair right.....

unrestricted and uncensored.....wide open....how ya like me now ?

Can ya hear me now ?  How about now ?     Don't dish it out if ya can't take it.

    Jessi.

  • NotSoSinglechick25 said on Jun 26, 2007....
Personally Jessi, I don't like you.  I find you rude, foul, and disgusting.  And furthermore I didn't post anything about TNP and I've never attacked you.  But I have seen where you have repeated and without compunction attack others with no provocation.  I'm tired of it.  I'm tired of all of you that do it.  Have your own opinions but keep your ranting and ignorance on your blog where we can ignore it if we so choose.

And this justifies your treatment of Artemis, who sure as fuck has had nothing to do with you until recently, in what way?  Because you can?  How classy.  You don't deserve to be called trailer trash--you're lower than that.

And although I'm one of Cam's "support porn for children" poster moms (LAWL!) I didn't post in TNP's blog.  Ever.  Never even looked at his pics.  Prove that I did.

If you cannot phrase your thoughts in some semblance of maturity, don't spatter the filth here.

Now then. I've never even heard of you. Neither had Artemis, who by the way, STILL is not an alter ego for ANYone. I don't read TNP because I don't like him. I don't read Cops, because he and I disagree on a very big life philosophy.

I don't attack them. I don't harrass them. And I DON'T accuse others of BEING them. I simply ignore their existence.

And you know what? I get lots of attention without being hateful and spitefilled.

  • boyzmom said on Jun 26, 2007....

If you want a community dump where adults of that walk wish to congregate, maybe someone in the circle of egomaniacs within which you exist, should be able to devise a method to view your wares, for lack of a better word, in a properly secured Adult Only viewing area.  Who says it can not be done ?

We've been adamant on allowing everyone to speak because of the fact that users can block other users and police their own plot of space on Soulcast. When new users start leaving we have to reconsider. At this point we are reviewing the situation.

One question that immediately comes to mind, why didn't she block them? It's only 3 or 4 accounts. Would this problem not have been solved with some deleting and blocking?

    TO SOULCAST

You might be right but consider this:  There are some that totally abuse the entire blog system with pornography and what have you.

When it comes to attacking others on the blog it seems there are a few here that seem to think the "run" or "own" this entire place.

It is as frustrating to the oldsters as it is the new ones.

If you are inclined to pursue changing the entire program then it would seem that an entire review be done to see who the main culprits are.

It's not for me to say or name names as I am as guilty as the next.

If you are going to set rules..then set them !

Don't take the loss of one double SN and use that as an example. That's as wrong as can be. There are truly some nasty people here that have way overstepped the bounds of decency.

If you intend to impose censorship, then feel free to lose 2/3rds your viewership.

Rules are rules just be VERY clear what is a rule and what is implied.

    JD the Cop

PS. I am in agreement with standards but the standards so far are terrible.

  • SoulCast said on Jun 27, 2007....
We have no enforced standards at this point, but we are wondering if it's time. Let me start by saying that we have no problems with adult content. What we have a problem with is the harassment.

Keep in mind that many of the people behind soulcast have accounts and are active users. We know what goes on around here!

We do not want to enforce rules, but we may be forced to take that course of action.

  • silverwhisper said on Jun 27, 2007....
SC: this is hardly the first time a user left due to abusive behavior by others. surely this can't possibly be news to you? others most certainly have.

why not block the users? b/c not everyone spends the kind of time here that other users do. and considering the user in question was being insulted for being raped, i really don't think that's the question to be asking. i'm fairly certain that's not an atmosphere you want promulgated here.

spending time on SC is something that all of us like to do--if it weren't, there wouldn't be anywhere near as many comments here. but allowing what's happened to go w/out implementing any changes whatsoever most assuredly sends the message that in essence, people shouldn't feel safe baring their souls here--that they shouldn't feel safe soulcasting.

I think it's right that you should have an issue with harassment, as it no longer deals with your first amendment rights of saying anything stupid that you want, but you are starting to infringe on other people's right to do the same.

I applaud you admins for looking into this situation and hope we can go back to being the happy little community that we once were.

As always, your guys/gals are doing a bang up job and I am glad to be a part of this group.

You bring up many issues that I could discuss at great length.

You'd have to define safe. Anytime something is published it is open to criticism of some form even insults. Look at Anne Coulter! Ultimately we don't believe it's possible to prevent insults.

We hope the anonymity adds a layer of safety, and the ability to delete and block is there to stop harassment. Soulcast is a very large site. Larger than the vast majority of message boards and we hope it gets larger. There is no way we can arbitrate disputes between different users across the whole site. We want to give users the ability to police their own part of soulcast. We'd love to hear suggestions along these lines.
  • silverwhisper said on Jun 27, 2007....
you want suggestions? i've got a few:

    1. cool-off period on new IDs. allow them to post blog entries but don't allow commenting for a little while. part of what happened to artemis was ganging-up of alts. slow that, slow the snowball effect. while this does mean newcomers will have a slower start in getting known by more-established soulcasters, if you make the delay something like 60 mins or the like, i think that's fairly reasonable.

    2. require as part of the TOS that multiple user IDs on SC be registered with you. this gives people the freedom to have alts if they like, but also allows their conduct to be observed more closely. violation = summary suspension of account, maybe a drop in their comments or blogs/day. that's a standard i'd be more than happy to meet and i wager that's true of everybody who's commented thus far.

    3. create a more clearly-defined standard by which harrassment/stalking is identified. i've obviously disagreed in the past with how certain, related cases were handled in the past--the current TOS employs a certain measure of ambiguity and it's within that ambiguity where the issue has happened, is happening now and barring change, will happen again.

that's off the top of my head. if i think of more, i'll add a few.

Being able to block users and delete their hateful comments does not erase the experience of being verbally attacked  - which is incredibly disgusting because it was about a physical attack, doesn't matter how long ago it happened.  The only result from blocking and deleting these hateful users is not warning other members of their agenda on this site.  If you read any of the blogs and comments posted by these users, the goal is fairly obvious and downright pathetic.  What happened to Artemis should NEVER happen but has occurred quite frequently since I've been a member here - approximately 4 months.  Something needs to be done about these users.

Further, blocking and deleting doesn't always seem to work properly, especially if you delete every comment someone made.

I have a user that I have blocked; they are on my blocked user list, yet they posted to my blog about 6 hours ago. I saw their comment within minutes of it being posted and right beside their userid it said, "you have blocked this user". Yet there their comment was on my blog.

The only thing I could figure was that because I had deleted their previous comments, they were still able to post. So, I unblocked them, reblocked them, and left their comment this time to see if that keeps them blocked.

Spoken as if you wear a halo there Weasel. You are far from above the fray and nuances of SC.

I say and ask again that if you IMPOSE any form of censorship ( from the point of view that you own the thing) that the heavy hand be laid on perfectly and with equanimity.

Again, while I am amidst the fray and never claim to be innocent I hate to see others attacked at random for no other reason that they do not agree with some of the um..well..the private a close knit cliques.( alleged owenership of SC)

Please give us an over view of what YOU see as , a problem or a probable outcome of your comments.

I hate to see the halos come out and self serving statements and comments.

What do you have in mind and what is your perception of the problem?

Is this one person speaking for all or all speaking as one?

I subscribed because it was free. I enjoyed a modicum of enjoyment and innocence up until the time I got attacked for a counter view. After that well the record speaks for itself.

YOU tell US what to do..how to correct and please don't say just employ decency because there are some that don't understand that concept.

Has this gone to a Government agency..YES. Some of the things on here go well beyond the norm as I am now very SURE you are aware.

I am not an employee so I can speak my mind, that is not a self-serving statement but Lord do i wish i was. Got room?

If you are not stupid..and I am not stupid..what is the problem here and who is WE? It sounds like the same person to me.

I think you have overstepped on this one issue since it was an adult conversation and no profanity involved at all.

You took it personally as i did when you insinuated that I was not capable of understanding the concept of one voice etc. Not a nice post at all.

You may feel the power, as I said when it was deleted but do you have the maturity to deal on my level? No. No you don't obviously.

This is my last word, now feel free to say anything you wish.

this was at one time a very productive and happy community until a few allowed it to get to a harassing blog such as GuboJumptooth or what ever it was and sr. Bloc with his attacks and mobil I never heard of some of the people that attacked me and don't care.

It is unwarranted your taking the view that everyone is a child in mind. Very wrong. Please contact me a JDDollar2@AOL.COM  IF you wish to continue this conversation. Comments welcomed.

As you all know we limit the number of comments a user can post. New users are allowed fewer comments than regular users. One idea we've had is to reduce the number of comments a person is allowed for a given day if they get a comment deleted. Each deleted comment will reduce it further. New users aren't allowed many comments so fake accounts would feel the effect more.

What's to prevent abuse by deleting comments just to purposely reduced the amount that someone can comment.  There are some users here who delete any comment that disagrees with their viewpoint, even if the comment is civil. So, what's to keep someone or several someone's from deleting every comment that Silver, for instance makes, in a given day just to purposely reduced the number of comments he can make simply because they don't like him?

  • silverwhisper said on Jun 27, 2007....
SC: yes, i thought that might be the reasoning.

super z: that would require quite the conspiracy for a well-established soulcaster, but perhaps more importantly, i see it serving as an inducement to diversify one's commenting portfolio, so to speak. more diverse commenting is presumably better for the community, no?

"What's to prevent abuse by deleting comments just to purposely reduced the amount that someone can comment"

Someone can only do that if you comment on their blog. Second, the reduction isn't permanent. It will actually increase the number of comments the system thinks you've made today in effect reducing the comments you can make; just for that day.
Once someone abuses that I would hope people will stop commenting on their posts.

@ Soulcast - I'd like to chime in here.  I'm fairly new and I feel I have behaved in my actions towards others.  I like the ideas offered so far BUT limiting the comments to new users could limit me too.  Isn't that restricting everyone because a few don't know how to play nice?

I don't have a problem AT ALL with uncensored blogging.  I don't read what offends me.  Attacking and/or harassing others is an entirely different ball game in my book.  I recently pulled a post because of this very issue.

I also have begun to re-think what I write in my blog in fear of being attacked.  So much for uncensored blogging.  I am already censoring myself.

There has to be another way.  Could personal attacks (not disagreeing with a view point) be flagged in some way and then reviewed by SC?  I've read things written here that in my opinion were blatant threats.

there already is a comment limit, but you dont' see it :) It's to limit spammers. If this plan works out as I hope then it won't affect new users. If it does we'll remove it. The last thing we want is to restrict legitimate users.

"be flagged in some way and then reviewed by SC?"
We don't want to review it, that's the catch. We can't keep up with the volume of such a large site and we don't want to play the role of thought police on every dispute that occurs on the site.
  • LadyGamer said on Jun 27, 2007....

I like the idea of deleted posts limiting the allowed posts temporarily.

I LIKE having an uncensored site in which to blog.

I LIKE saying what I like when I like, I sure don't get that anywhere else.

But I do understand .....and here is where I think a HUGE difference occurs.... I DO understand that many people are not as strongwilled as me. I opened this post because those who attacked Artemis cannot possibly do to me what they did to her. I don't personally care one iota what those who have proven themselves without value to me have to say about me. They don't know me. If they did...and that wouldn't be difficult with my uncensored blog laid out for all to see.... they would know that painting me with a group brush won't stick in the least.

I am unique. I am magnificent. Anyone who doesn't get that can suck it. *winks*

    Ahem...back on topic.

I'm curious why people keep screaming that everyone is everyone else. Does it matter?

Now we have to have rules for the rules that rule.

When the ownership comes on and takes the helm it's like a bunch of children pointing fingers and saying " No me daddy".

    What a crock. !!!

I am disgusted to the enth degree. I have admitted my involvement and never backed off same. I have been in conversation with SC and they have found me at fault for stirring the pot. So be it. So what?

My feeling is I have lived up to the "code" what ever that is. I am beginning to find that the code or conduct of "rules" are those that are manufactured to fit the circumstances.

If i get kicked off it is for telling it like it is..not for anything you mealy mouthed people have said or done. it is because I refuse to subjugate myself to the whims of the many and I believe that censorship should be part of the Government under Marshall law..not on a private blog. We are about to test that theory. If I'm gone, I am gone..song chapter and verse.

    Great idea.

Here's another - as a part of the registration process, can you collect birthdates, then set your system to block access to posts with "adult content" for anyone under 18? Just a thought. There would have to be a list somewhere of "adult content" tags. And you'd have to collect birthdates from all the current users.

Or maybe a checkbox in the edit post window to mark it as adult content? Separate from the tag system?

It's not infallible, kids could put in a false date. But it might fix some of the issues over adult content.
  • Eilan said on Jun 27, 2007....
Expendable, that's not a bad idea.  I frequent a site in which people have to be at least 18 to register and you're right--it's not infallible.  Every so often someone will lie about a birth date or otherwise slip through the cracks.

On Artemis' blog, I was one of the first commenters to politely ask Hottips not to use an example from my comment to support her abuse of Artemis or anyone else. From there, it snowballed out of control, and I realized what Bloc and LadyGamer did and posted the following anonymous comment. I posted anonymously then because at the time I felt to attach a name would only incite further the abusive parties and sink poor Artemis' post deeper into chaos and hoped that people would get the hint and simply stop acknowledging the abuse. From this, that hasn't happened.

I recommend no one even acknowledge any of the posts on anyone's blog by these offensive members and delete them immediately throughout the entire site and they will soon lose interest if they have no one with whom to wage their online battles.

To acknowledge them beyond the words I type right here, right now, is simply a waste of effort and pointless. It's what they want. Acknowledgment for their bad deeds. Stop and they will go away.

I too like the freedom of speech here and uncensored blogging. I come from a journalism background, but with those freedoms comes responsibilities that some simply respect.

So, in light of simply ignoring the actions of the few bad apples or disrespectful persons, YEAH, maybe some constraints are necessary.

I like the deletion of an offensive comment directly affects their ability to comment more in some incremental fashion. If they are restricted daily or incrementally, then perhaps the rest of us would get some reprieve and IT would certainly make the offenders think long and hard about what they are going to say. Maybe their comments will become more useful contributions rather than blatant verbal and often racial abuse.

Your conversation with me was very informative and measurable.

    Your background was Journalism.

Mine was military. I was in the service of this country getting shot, stabbed and shot down in an aircraft. Dragging my ass through the jungles with a busted up back. I flew all over the world taking on assignments on a volunteer basis many of my colleagues got killed..that means shot or blown apart. I jumped into jungles, deserts and into the black of night..I was decorated many times...

why did I do that? Just so you..I said YOU could have the right to say what ever the hell you want to. You have the audacity and temerity to call me a rotten apple?

Go back to the priest or Rabbi you kneel to and tell him that tonight you met a real man and he was NOT you.

You know something, is that a lot of good people are leaving Soul Cast, people that have been here for a long while. They feel caught in between and are having to choose sides. It all makes me so sick that it is happening, if we all decided to just be civil to each other, no one has to like the other, we don't even have to trust the people we don't want to. I don't think that Soulcast will ever really recover from this, too much anger, and cruel words exchanged. It is all too easy to say ugly things to each other when we don't have to look at the person we are saying them too  to see the hurt in their eyes. People come on here to bare their souls and are praying they won't get attacked, it shouldn't  be that way.  Without the safety and feeling that this is the best place, people don't want to share anything.  Then you have the mindless chatter that is usually the reason for my posts.   When I go to post something that is close to me, I really have to ask myself if am I prepared to be scoffed at. I don't want to see this go down hill, especially when we have the power to fix things but all parties have to agree and make an effort.

I trust people to do what they do.  No more, no less.  It's when people go above and beyond that I get surprised.  I know I can trust Coldie or Willbrich for a good joke I can tell my non-SC friends.  I trust LG for a good bit of snark, unyielding strength for her daughters.  I can trust Z for her candor, her perspective.  I know I can trust mom to add a dose of humor in every situation(so important to me), I know I can trust ed to throw in his two cents.... everywhere.  I know ed's a rich man.  He may or may not be financially, I don't know, but I do know that he has a rich life.   CeeDub for her genuine ability to care for others, her kindness.  Even though bloc and I don't see eye to eye, I have a profound respect for the way stands up for what he believes in.  I trust Hunter's wisdom.  Hunter's my pastor and he doesn't even know it.  It's fitting that a renegade preacher has a renegade flock.  I trust Secret to be supportive, always there to lend a sympathetic ear.  I miss Happykat for her special brand of snark, I miss JadeLondon before she was outed, I miss ALIENated and TNP before they were replaced by pod-people.  Or were they robots?  A team of robots maybe?  I don't know.  I'm still working on that theory.

On the other side of that very same coin, I also trust copsuntied to do what he does, and his ilk(332001, ChefK, Kevin....  remember them veterans?).  Once the purpose, or the intention behind the blog is established, I have most of time found those to be consistent with the behavior of the blogger.  This way, the question, "Why do you blog?" becomes more poignant than ever before.

Many of us are here to vent, laugh, cry, scream, shout, connect, celebrate, mourn, remember, forget, all at the same time.  Others are an essential part of this equation.  We make ourselves feel better, we break our hearts, we deal with it all together.  We need each other to do that.  It makes us feel connected in the most literal way, less isolated, less like a voice in the wilderness.  Some of us are here only for amusement.  Because it pleases us.  This blatant disregard of others in searching for self-gratification bespeaks of utter desolation and loneliness to me.  Some of us are here only to make fun of others, because that's the only way we feel good about ourselves.

So in this regard, it is indeed a great shame that a voice like Artemis, who wanted to connect, who wanted to open up, share, heal and celebrate with us was silenced by a smug, self-satisfying bully.

My apologies for being so long-winded.  But by now, you trust me to be so, no?  ;)

Someone, I don't even remember the name said I dropped bombs on children and other civilians. Wrong identity, I was not in the aircraft that did that. Kill innocent people. I don't really know but if one of your family members were there and you survived, I did not do such a good job.

My location of activity was NOT just in Vietnam, Twit, it was around the world. I did things you simply have no concept of and never will. With a closed mind such as you. you will never ever grasp the reality of the world. You have not even been to another foreign country except a guided tour to Mexico or Canada. Don't preach at me twat, you are able to have you voice on this net because of the thousands that went before me.

Oh, by the way, did you know when we bombed the SHIT out of Berlin we killed more civilians in one week that we did in all of Vietnam? Did you? Huh?

Go screw yourself and your liberal thinking...

Did I say I did it all single handed? NO !! I did it with thousands of others and if you are so interested why have you not joined the military and fight for YOUR country so you can continue to have the rights and privileges you enjoy now.

Sing to Hitler, the kaiser,  etc maybe even Sadam is of interest in your Prayers?

How about bin Laden? Do you include him in your prayers? You are a freak if you think freedom comes without a cost.

The battle of Berlin cost 40,000 to 100,000 civilian lives.

The USAAF 8th Air Force under the Bomber command excercised day raids over the area.

    Read below...

    Battle of Berlin (air)

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Jump to: navigation, search
For the Soviet assault and capture of Berlin in 1945, see Battle of Berlin.

The Battle of Berlin was a British bombing campaign on Berlin from November 1943 to March 1944, as well as other German cities to prevent concentration of defences in Berlin. It was launched by Arthur "Bomber" Harris, AOC of RAF Bomber Command in November 1943. Harris believed this could be the blow which broke German resistance: "It will cost us between 400 and 500 aircraft. It will cost Germany the war."[1] By this time he could deploy over 800 long-range bombers on any given night, equipped with new and more sophisticated navigational devices such as H2S radar. Between November 1943 and March 1944 Bomber Command made 16 massed attacks on Berlin.

It is generally accepted that the Battle of Berlin was a failure for the Royal Air Force (RAF) as it was not the knock out blow that Harris had predicted and during the battle, the RAF lost 1,047 bombers, with a further 1,682 damaged, and well over 7,000 aircrew, culminating in the raid on Nuremberg on March 30, 1944, when 94 bombers were shot down and 71 damaged, out of 795 aircraft.[2][3][4]

There were many other raids on Berlin by the RAF and the USAAF Eighth Air Force in the strategic bombing campaign of 1940–1945 and this is reflected in the RAF battle honour which is for bombardment of Berlin by aircraft of Bomber Command 1940–1945.[5]

I don't CARE if people have multiple accounts or who might be whom. Using multiple accounts to get around being blocked is underhanded and mean, in my opnion, but really unstoppable unless one traces accounts back to IP addresses and that would be a lot more spooky than having to block multiple accounts.

I'm no longer a member of this community, but here is my opinion, for what ever you feel it's worth (yes, I know, it's an odd place for me to resurface -- it's a momentary anomaly, I assure you).  I can respect the principles that the operators of Soulcast are trying to instantiate and maintain here:  uncensored, free expression.  But that's how you build a forum, not a community.  A community implies a set of standards and a certain regard for your peers, standards that are acted upon and maintained by that community.  Soulcast thus far seems to basically be in a state of anarchy, in the most vacuous, teenaged sense of the word;  long on entitlement and personal prerogative and short on the sense of community responsibility required.  I have no interest in a community that abides, supports and shelters as ridiculous and despicable a person as copsunited.  My faith in human nature suffered almost daily when confronted by how easily he manipulated and played everyone here and was able to march on.  Dissent or difference of opinion is one thing;  copsunited isn't about dissent, he's about hurting people and messing with them for his own amusement.  The impotence of this community, its members and its operators and its unwillingness to police itself is why I left.  I look in periodically, because I have friends here, but I can't even really do that much anymore, because frankly, this ridiculous display compromises my respect for them too and I don't want to feel that way about people that I care about.

People say block and ignore.  That isn't the answer and it doesn't work.  When someone craps on your kitchen floor, you don't ignore them -- you throw them out.  After attempting to address the matter directly and then 'officially', I've ended up doing the ultimate block and ignore -- I've bailed on the site (I'll terminate my account as soon as Soulcast allows me too).  I got tired of the answer to copsunited's clear and obvious line-crossing abuses always being block and ignore.  At the end of the day, this place just isn't worth it anymore.  I think it's sad that nobody wants to build and defend an actual community.  The internet is chock-full of places where people can vacuously spew shit and see who and how well they can bait and stir the pot.  This place seemed like an actual community.  The failure of that isn't copsunited's fault -- it's everyone's for letting it continue.  All of the outrage, all of the ire, all of the drama -- it's vacuous hand-wringing.  You are unable or unwilling to do anything about it.  If you're unable to, then you need to go somewhere where you can do something about it.  And if you're unwilling, then you really have no complaint coming to you.

    Sorry.

I know I'm stepping on toes and probably hurting feelings.  I also know that I'm an outsider and that this really isn't my business anymore.

    But there you have it.

    Sayonara.

Chimera: I have to say that this afternoon, I was thinking the very same thing. I even said that to a mutual acquaintance of ours. I'm beginning to think it's time to bail on Soulcast altogether.

Frankly, Soulcast, while you may have some good ideas about what can now be done. I honestly think your efforts to do something about Copsunited are too little and too late.  Something should have been done the first time he launched a racial attack against other members. Something should have been done when he, Hottips, and Cam commented in one of Cam's threads and threatened bodily harm against TNP.  But nothing was.  And really, your asking him to not attack anyone carries very little weight with him as he continues to attack people in comments on blogs.
  • SoulCast said on Jun 28, 2007....
We've always seen soulcast as a cloud of many overlapping communities, not a single community. Imagine a cloud of vin diagrams. There are far to many of them for us to manually police and we do not feel it is best for us to do such a thing if we could. We want to empower users to police their own area of soulcast. This is the vision and it's not changing.

You ask that we delete his account for racist comments. That's well within the range of free speech, but let's forget that for a moment. Have you asked us to delete the accounts of those that have claimed all muslims are terrorists, that mexicans are criminals, that women are mere objects? What about those that say everyone that isn't x is a heathen and will burn in hell? Where along this chain would you have us stop deleting accounts?

More importantly, where would we find the time? There are over 70k accounts on soulcast and there are a myriad of disputes everyday. We can not arbitrate such volume or there would be no real work done on soulcast!

We can delete a users account, but it's not possible to prevent them from starting another. Some of you seem to think there is a way, but there isn't. I'll make a wager with anyone that thinks they can stop me from posting on a public forum! Some of you may say, "but you are a computer expert". This is true, but it doesn't take an expert to quickly learn how to do such a thing. A few google searches will suffice

It takes less than 5 seconds to delete a comment, and it takes someone far longer to write one. It's highly effective if people would try it. It's true that this is a game of whack a mole, but it's also true that deleting accounts is a game of whack a mole. Why do you think centralized whack a mole would be more effective than empowering everyone with a mallet?

Honestly, deleting a users account simply removes their comments. They can easily pop up again whether we're deleting their comments or if you are. I'm sure that all of you are far more efficient at it than we would be.

SC: that's because it isn't a mallet. at most, it's a rubber chicken.

you seem to misapprehend the core issue here.

the issue here isn't one of racist comments, which would actually have been a problem under a former version of the TOS, which i notice has been modified to be more toothless than before.

no, the issue here is about an obvious pattern of behavior, a pattern of which nobody but the very stupidest could have remained ignorant, which cannot be interpreted as anything other than a violation of section 7S of the TOS in a multitude of ways. sure, you can throw up your hands and say "any action we take is meaningless", but that to me is about as sensible as asking "why vote"?

bouncing a user who's cost you several others already--and will cost you more in the future due to continued inaction--is about as clear-cut a cost/benefit analysis as you're ever going to find. if a community full of people like that is what you want, then by all means please continue taking no action b/c that will be the inevitable result.

you say it's a meaningless action. you're absolutely wrong. i don't know what you had in mind when 7S of the TOS was drafted but if the behavior we saw in artemis223's blog entry could possibly be characterized as anything other than harrassment, you need a new dictionary.

several users have asked that you simply enforce the TOS. they're right. not b/c i dislike CU, "hottips" or whoever, although that's certainly true and that too should be blindingly obvious to anyone, but because if you refuse ever to enforce the TOS, you set the legal precedent that you are permitting the TOS to be violated, and legally, that's something you absolutely cannot afford. your corporate counsel will tell you the same.

every single time you permit the TOS to be violated, you reduce its impact and viability as a meaningful legal protection, but worse, you set into motion inevitable speculation as a consequence: "well, if that didn't get someone bounced, well, WTF will?" and at some point, someone is gonna wanna find out.

i've been wondering that myself ever since i was so bitterly disappointed about how you chose not to act about hunter.

Which is precisely why I think that blocking does not necessarily work--and why I generally do not do so. If someone is bound on doing harm, he/she will find a way. It's a damned shame, but I suppose that is the price we pay for having our anonymity.

Don't think by any means that I condone it. Having been the victim of hazing, I completely realize the impact spiteful words--opinions, if you will--can have. And having my own conflicts within my home life, it saddens me to see one of my few escapes so marred. And some may think I sit the fence--but I simply wish to avoid the fray, to be the social butterfly that my present reality does not allow me to be.

I cannot say I know much of Artemis, but I can imagine that she wished something similar--to lift a few burdens from her shoulders, to find a little kindness.

Anonymous should not equate to asshole. Even the harshest of opinions can be better phrased. You know, employ a bit of tact and diplomacy. Point out flaws, if necessary--but do we need to resort to name calling?

Alright, alright--I'm stepping off my soapbox. :)

I see how people here will stick up for each other and think that a short-term solution to the problem is a good idea, a long-term solution would take more time to initiate so focusing on right now with so many people upset is a good thing. If the same sort of things happens in a week or a month, I am sure SoulCast would consider more long-term alternatives.
  • D6fer said on Jun 30, 2007....
thats what I thought.....I think the best policy is to ignor bad behavior....if you have a real problem with someone....block them......I guess if I could make one suggestion it would be that if you block someone that they will become invisible to you....not only on your posts, but on all posts....I think the problem will solve itself then.

carm: would you have been happier if they didn't do anything?

guys, here's why blocking & deleting doesn't work.

i'm assuming that we all like this place better when a flame war isn't raging across a dozen blog pages. if that doesn't describe you, you probably haven't been following this discussion, though.

    1. nobody wants to keep writing "here's why [x] is a bad person" blog entries because all it will do is re-ignite a flamewar. and you would have to keep writing them so newcomers see it.

    2. blocking & deleting a given user's comments will destroy the evidence of why that person should not be listened to. it's the very specific reason that when "hottips" when racist, i specifically asked ms bradford not to block & delete her comments. it's why when CU went on the attack in my own blog pages, i let the comments stand. deleting destroys evidence.

the net result of the foregoing: there's no reliable information for a newcomer to use when trying to figure out who a given soulcaster is, what he or she is really like.

soulcast: thank you. i'll refrain from saying more.

Doing something half ass, or half heartedly or taking forever....is not always better than nothing. Its taken what, how much complaining to enforce the terms of service in this matter, how much jumping up and down?

But if we delete the offensive comments and ignore the offending member, they are not getting the attention that they are craving.  If we block them, they can't make anymore comments that could hurt someone and I think ultimately that should be the goal, not gaining "evidence" against people like we are going to prosecute (or persecute) these members.  I don't think gaining "evidence" of bullies bad behavior should be the purpose of this site, if we don't give an outlet for their filth, they will go somewhere else or just keep it to "their space."  From reading everything, I just think this has gone on sooooo long.  Can't we all just get along?  :-D  MM
  • silverwhisper said on Jun 30, 2007....
carm: i disagree. in this case, it's done something.

mm: some people aren't worth "getting along" with. and that's the simple truth.

  • Expendable said on Jun 30, 2007....

mm: It's more like some people don't want to get along. Pushing people down hoping that they'd stand out, only what they're really doing is sabotaging themselves.

"what is to stop someone from signing up with a false identity?"

Nothing. It's very easy to mask your ip address even if we tracked such things.

    @d6
"if I could make one suggestion it would be that if you block someone that they will become invisible to you"

This is a good idea. Unfortunately, it would take a while to implement and would most likely affect performance. We are brainstorming ideas for the long term, that don't involve our direct action, so keep the suggestions coming.

    @sw
"nobody wants to keep writing "here's why [x] is a bad person" blog entries because all it will do is re-ignite a flamewar"

Do you have to? Won't the person's actions say all that needs to be said?

"there's no reliable information for a newcomer to use when trying to figure out who a given soulcaster is, what he or she is really like."

Maybe we can remedy this. What if users could see how many other users have blocked any given user? Sort of like the ebay ratings.
  • Zayda said on Jun 30, 2007....
    @SC
A person's actions/words should speak for themselves. Unfortunately, in the case with Copsunited, he deleted his blog several times, so much of the evidence of the ilk of his character wasn't there for people to view. So, there weren't actions there to fully look at.

And well, much of what he did, including the harassing of a rape survivor was touted as being okay by other users because he should be able to say what he wanted to. So, people's actions/words don't always say what needs to be said.

    SC quoth:
Maybe we can remedy this. What if users could see how many other users have blocked any given user? Sort of like the ebay ratings.

Part of me likes this idea, but there is also a drawback in that some people automatically block anyone who disagrees with them while others block almost everyone who disagrees with them, no matter how civil the disagreement. This could be evidenced in CamDaMan's post "CamDaMan vs. the Naked Professor" blog before he deleted the whole entry. He/she/they would delete comments that disagreed with their point of view and then block most of those users as well. Anyone who disagreed also became labeled a pedophile, and now there are comments going about about how any user who supported TNP's right to free speech is a pedophile.
  • Expendable said on Jun 30, 2007....

@SC: If part of that includes linking to the posting where they were blocked, sure. Or if you're able to add a comment as to why you're blocking them - and the person being blocked can comment too, just like ebay.

  • silverwhisper said on Jun 30, 2007....
SC: no, they won't if that user's comments are deleted. and yeah, what super z said was spot on.

Here’s a modestly simple proposal: let’s think of each individual blog site as our own house. When you visit one of my posts, you’re in a room in my home.

Even the rudest among us would be reticent to shout a person down in their own home. Most of us behave ourselves when visiting someone else’s home, even if we don’t like them.

Of course, in my own house I’ll feel free to say and do whatever I want to, including running round naked.

If you’re not having enough neighbors drop by your place, make more social calls and behave yourself so they’ll want to visit your house.

But please do not vandalize my house, do a home invasion, crash my party or trespass uninvited.

  • LadyGamer said on Jul 01, 2007....
I think that is a very good way of looking at it TNP.
  • bloc said on Jul 01, 2007....
tnp is right on. You kick them out of your house when they are rude and you don't visit their house. Zayda is right as well. It will be possible to abuse any system that's put in place. The simplest solution is the best solution. Block, delete, ignore.
