i have one one or two occasions received PMs that i simply deleted rather than trying to open as i did not already know the sender. i was wondering how unusual that is.

me, i never open a PM from a user i don't already know in some capacity.

how about you?

like you, i don't typically open a PM from a user I don't already know in some capacity.

although, if I'm clicking through PMs quickly I might pop one open from someone I don't know on accident. but i typically don't respond to the ones from someone i don't know either.

I only got one and I did open it and it was about one of my blogs...someone asking about boston accents.  I thought later, I will never open another one again, even though the PM was no big deal.  I had a major 'DUH!' moment.

I have no problems reading PMs from folks that I might not know. And since I've rarely received any, here or elsewhere, that were truly rude and undesirable, I generally respond as well. As far as I know, a PM in a forum environment can't contain a virus or worm the way that an email can, so I don't see any harm in opening PMs.
  • silverwhisper said on Jun 26, 2007....
infernal: i see that's not an unusual response. :>

artemis: speaking solely for myself, i spend a good deal of time here in a lot of conversations. and frankly, if i don't already know someone, i'm more or less certain that i'm not interested in what that person has to say in private that can't be said publicly.

LJ: i hadn't considered it from the computer security angle--to me, it's simply a matter of trust.

Sure, I'd respond.  Why not?  Some folks are too shy to make public comments, but still want to have their say.  If they're asshats, they can always be blocked.

Now, if it were one of those "u r hawt lets fuk" messages, I probably wouldn't respond, unless it were from Mimi.

I've never gotten a PM from someone I didn't already 'know' around here. But if I did, I'd open it. I wouldn't see the harm. If the contents were rude or inappropriate, I'd just delete it and move on. I'm WAY too curious of a person to just delete something without reading it first. I'd at least want to see what the person had to say and go from there. I agree with what Eilan said. Some people are shy to voice their thoughts publicly. I know of one person that feels exactly like that and they've been using the PM's to get to know people in a way that's more comfortable for them.

I'm very reluctant to open PMs, even in a secure environment for computer security.  I do know that there is software that allows companies to track which emails were opened and which were not.  As it is, my oldest email adress regularly gets as many as several hundred junkmails daily.

My work email (outlook) has a feature that helps all of this.  It give you a preview of what's in the email without having to open it.  Helps me decide if I need to dump it to junkmail or look at it.
  • lioneljay said on Jun 26, 2007....

I think I would understand using PM's instead of commenting openly because I tend to be shy, not so much but on some matters. So I would understand if someone sent me a PM even though I was not familiar with them, it would just encourage me to find out more about them. Not that I would ever get a PM from someone I don't know, I am just speaking hypothetically.

if ever i recieve a PMs from a stranger i would still open it though i may not reply if i dont feel comfortable responding to someone i dont know.... there is always a thought in me that what if the person means no harm and just wants to give you a message not in publics view? i mean whats important i think is the content not the sender, because you just never know if that person needs your help baldy and is too embarassed to go out in the open....

i read each PM i get whether i know the sender or not -- i don't get much of 'em anyway. i reply to most, if only to tell the sender i got and read his/her msg. for me it's a basic courtesy, somewhat like answering the doorbell or an incoming phone call.

  • biglove said on Jun 27, 2007....
WOW, Ed...I am a little surprised you wouldn't open something from someone new....your like the SC host....I figured you to be the first one to open a new message, at the very least read it before you judged it.

I don't see what the big deal is...it's not like a PM here would lead to your private e-mail address. And there are lots of new people that do make comments and are brushed over by the conversations going on between established friendships....it can be intimidating.

I open/read anything anyone sends to me, and if it is something nasty then I just won't open anything from that person again....I agree with destinydiva...you never know who or why this person has come to you.....but that is just my opinion.
