It seems that if you make the mistake of bringing a knife through an airport security checkpoint you instantly lose your constitutional rights.  At least that's what the TSA goons quoted in this article said.

A 57 year old woman shepharding 37 kids on a trip to Disneyland mistakenly leaves a bread knife in a carry-on cooler full of sandwiches for the kids and the TSA tells her not only does she have to pay a $500 fine, but that she has committed a felony and will now go on a terrorist watch list.  When she asks about her constitutional rights they inform her that she has none.

I'm not suggesting that there should be no fine for attempting to bring a weapon on board a plane, but the suggestion by the TSA that this woman all of the sudden had no constitutional rights make the hair on the back of my neck stand up.  We all have constitutional rights until they are deprived through due process, something that has been seriously eroded by the current administration.

Is anyone else creeped out by a statement like this?  Does anyone care about their constitutional rights anymore?

I'm absolutely creeped out by this.  This is horrible.  I wanna say it's just as bad as airport security strip-searching unknowning travelers with x-rays, but I'm having a hard time deciding which is worse at the moment...

And, for fuck's sake, it's a bread-knife!  With sandwiches!  That's nothing to lose your basic rights over!

I'd completely forgotten about that new x-ray technology and how very literally invasive it is.  Did they actually implement that?

I'm just appalled that statements like that don't get people in more of an uproar.  The more I observe the more I understand how it's possible for really rotten leaders to come into power.  People lose sight of the truly precious rights all too easily.

that's revolting, kelly. and sadly, some people are willing to accept that the ends justify the means enough not to care how they reach the result they want.

those watchlists are way over the line in my eyes for a simple reason. There is no due process. There is no way to say "show me why I"m on it" or to say "hey can you take me off. I'm here's proof that I'm not a terrorist".

This is the type of tool that can be easily abused to harass people for purely political reasons. "We don't like the ACLU let's add them to the watchlist to intimidate them."

A few years back, I forgot to take a pocket knife off my key ring before going through a security checkpoint. They offered to check it with my carry-on bag (which included my laptop and in-flight reading material), but I declined and allowed them to confiscate it. There was no talk of a fine or a security threat. Surely a woman distracted by 37 children who forgets a bread knife in a cooler full of sandwiches is no more threatening. That’s ridiculous.

Antimatter, just how many years ago was that?  Post  or pre 9/11?
  • Antimatter said on Jun 28, 2007....
It was definitely post-9/11. I don’t remember exactly which trip. It was probably 2004 or 2005, around the time that article was written.

    In fact, I just noticed that my incident was at the same airport. :}

    Now that's interesting.  :-)

hmm....guilty of a felony? Is it customary to have a trial first?

Well, it used to be.  Ah, those were the days....  We used to pull the Constitution out of the garage and give a good washing then wax it til it gleamed.  We'd stand there all proud as the neighbors nodded their heads in admiration and approval of our hard word.

But nowadays it stays parked in the garage, gathering dust.  I hear Bush and Cheney even put it up on blocks and pulled the radio out of the dash.

That's just simply ridiculous. And yes, it completely creeps me out that she was informed she had no constitutional rights.

super z: and yet, some blind apologists will go right on insisting that's the case.

While I believe what the TSA does is a bunch of crap....so is this statement. Yes, these rights are being eroded, but just by the current administration? If you read history, I'm sure you could see these rights being eroded throughout the last 100 years or more. Read, learn and take in the big picture. Do not be blinded by your obvoius contempt for this president.

and you should not be blinded by your obvious desire to give the current president a pass.

People willing to sacrifice freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both....
I was just reading a blog by a slave/sub and I wonder if they are being treated right. of course then I think well, they're a slave. But don't subs and slaves get to have rules that apply to them. i know so little about that world and yet I find myself...
