Not everyone who Yahoo!s is a yahoo! Haha....sorry, just punning - er, funning - around, folks.

Do you use Yahoo! - for e-news or e-mail? Just curious......

Also, which are you on right now - the original Yahoo! Mail or the Yahoo! Mail Beta?

Which do you prefer?

Personally, I think the Beta is a disaster sometimes, except for reading large-volume mail, while the original may be slower with more clicks/waits but very easy to log in to!

What do you think?

I use Yahoo for email, have been doing so for years now.  I like the Beta mail, but I just wish someone can tell me how to get into the address list without going into compose mode. . .do you perhaps know how?
  • uniquely-ironic said on Jun 21, 2007....
I use the mail, news and IM with Yahoo.  I'm using the Beta, but it's a little bit unwieldy at times.
  • wombat said on Jun 21, 2007....
I have Yahoo (the original) also.  I get messages to "upgrade to Beta" but have not messed with it.  Also, when we moved in I got Internet through Comcast the other day.The technician was setting me up with a new home page and password--a Comcast hompage.  As soon as he left, I went into tools and internet options and made Yahoo my home page again.  There they were--all my familiar things on the screen.  I stick to familiar, and am hard to convince otherwise, even if it is better.

I use email Beta and directions, and I read news.
email Beta sucks, I guess that's why it's still "Beta" for quite some time. But I like the interface.

I use Yahoo for e-mail and IM.  I used to use their chat as well, but it sucks since they did away with the user rooms.

I met my husband via Yahoo! Personals back in 2001.  I have a Yahoo! email account that I rarely remember to check.  Thanks for reminding me!
  • the_infernal_optimist said on Jun 21, 2007....
My primary email is a Yahoo! account I've had for several years. I use a different Yahoo! messenger name, which matches my AIM (primary messenger) name.

    I also use Gmail.

You couldn't pay me to mess with the Yahoo! Beta crap.

Hello Bronx, I use yahoo! mail and messenger.. for the e-mail, i prefer the original one. =)
  • ninjapirate said on Jun 22, 2007....
I use Yahoo too for email and messenger and have since I started using the internet, so its been years.  I'm guessing I use the orignial, but I don't really see anything for beta anyway, ohwell.
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
SW: that's quite unique, IMHO! Any particular reason?
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
SL: same here - I have their browser loaded on my laptop.

The only quarrel I have with Yahoo is their close business link with Microsoft - which had considered/debated buying it some months ago - and their news links that seem to evaporate after a short while!

Gets quite embarrassing linking to one of their news items and finding out later on that the link leads to a dead end that even Yahoo! doesn't know how to recover from.
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
polar: hi....yes, that can get tricky sometimes!

If I recall correctly, there's a button labeled 'Addresses'  in the  original Yahoo! Mail, right  under  the Yahoo! Mail logo on the top LHS of the screen.

The BETA version has a similar arrangement in a rectangular box with several folders labeled from 'Inbox' to 'My Folders' - the addresses you need would be in the folder labeled 'contacts'.

If it's not there, you'd probably need to get the new Yahoo! Messenger installed.

    See if that helps.....
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
U-I: yes, it can be unwieldy - for such a complex tool, it lacks a totally solid feel like the original.

It's great though for scanning lots of e-mail fast!
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
wombat: hi....I agree with you - what is 'better' is a personal choice.

    will: WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

Yes, it's been in beta for quite some time now, hasn't it - since 2005 or so?

satyr: hi...I IM with Yahoo! but have never used the chat rooms - but I hear the new features on Messenger8 and the new online Messenger are great!
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
Eilan: wow, wow....a match made in Yahoo! Never met anyone it happened to till now.

You're very welcome - if 'rarely' is more than about 3 months, I think the contents of your e-mailbox may have been yahoo!-ed....!

BTW, how has it worked out with your husband - any great regrets?
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
TIO: haha...yes, the Beta can be crappy at times - can suddenly go ka-boom just with a little innocent but wrong/mistaken click!

Who knows - it was probably rigged that way so that we can watch 'SLIM CLIVE'(?) running away from or explaining something/another or demonstrating the suicide bomber's art online!

I am really looking forward to getting Gmail - I hear the features are great!
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
Lioness: hi, long time ...yes, you've definitely got great taste! ;  )
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
    ninjapirate: WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

It's unmistakable - the Beta has this preview pane that displays all your e-mails, so that you can click on which one you need to open and immediately see the contents in the second/bottom  half of the  screen below.

In the original, all the e-mails are shown and the contents are displayed in a new window, full-screen.

Unless they figure your system does not meet the minimum requirements for it, you should have gotten an onscreen invitation to switch to the Beta by now.

I use Yahoo for email, news and IM.  I use the beta mail and I have not encountered any problems.  In fact, I prefer it over the original.  I use the IM frequently and it can be quite bumpy at times!  :-)  MM

other sites do what they do but to me, they do it better.

How do you mean - quite bumpy?
  • Bronx said on Jun 22, 2007....
    SW: oh......OK.
  • minniemouse said on Jun 22, 2007....
HI Bronx.....lol...I guess by "bumpy" I mean that IM doesn't always go smoothly.  It will get stuck or all of a sudden knock you off line or just plain will not let you sign in.  Oh well!!!  Just a minor annoyance!!  :-)  MM

yeah i use yahoo. i dont like beta too... =)
  • Antimatter said on Jun 22, 2007....

I use Yahoo! Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Groups, and occasionally the Yahoo! Directory. Otherwise, I avoid it completely. I don’t use their search or e-mail service at all. I can’t stand web mail user interfaces, including Hotmail and even Gmail. (Yes, I actually pay a little money for a good, quality IMAP account that I can use with any e-mail program of my choosing, typically Thunderbird or Apple Mail.)

  • fearing said on Jun 22, 2007....
I use the original Yahoo for mail.  I didn't like the beta.  I also have Gmail and I like it better.  I like the way everything is in conversation form and I like the chat feature but old habits die hard.  I  forever return to my Yahoo address.

gmail is too good. I use yahoo for all my junk mail :) Basically i use the yahoo address for anything that requires I give an email address. gmail is for my real email (people I know personally, work, etc)

use yahoo to cam w/ family and other friends & associates, mail @ 3 locations other than yahoo.   No user rooms, chat is waste of time in yahoo.

    bloc: that's very clever.

I also use hotmail and will move on to Gmail soon for the experience.

BTW, Yahoo! has just given me a free upgrade to a limitless storage account!

One of the most useful and innovative web applications that is beginning to create a buzz is Web Mail. The application (which is used on the Internet) allows it users to access, send, receive and manage their email all through a web browser....
I have to tell this story in the hopes that somebody else won't be fool like I was. I went against my better judgement, and my father's voice in the back of my head....
True to their word, on November 11th, Yahoo changed the homepage--yet again. I was ok with that at first because I knew how to go to the very bottom of the page and click onto "Classic Yahoo Mail" to get back to my familiar page where things were...
