I usually am pretty good about cutting myself slack in the behavior and appearance area, but today I'm bummed out.  I brought my daughter to work with me and had the company wellness coach do a body fat % on her.  Granted, she's all "fang and fur" (very thin) but I was hoping that she wouldn't be impossibly thin.

She's within normal limits, but I'm OVER twice her body fat and this makes me very sad.  I know I'm older and other pathetic excuses, but I miss being thin like her.  I know I can diet and exercise, but at present feel pretty bad at how I've gotten in this shape.

How do I break out of this so that I can enjoy my day?!

you tell yourself that when you were her age, you had the body of a teenager...but you aren't a teenager anymore.

then you eat yogurt for breakfast and salad for lunch...and take a nice walk to burn it off.

one day at a time ui...that's how to make any kind of change.

QT - you got it.  I'm actually working with the wellness coach on that same issue.

Uniquely you have to also take into account that body fat percentages vary depending on your age.  For example the normal range is a bit higher if you are older.  When I lived with my ex husband we had some scales which had body fat percentage on them and the chart which came with them gave a guide to ideal percentages for women and men at different age ranges.

The other thing to consider is that checking your body fat percentage and then beating yourself up about it can feel very similar to weighing yourself on the scales and finding you have gained x amount of pounds since last week/month/year.

I have discovered a philosophy of learning to love your body as it is now.  This is about never dieting again and to me it sounds like a breath of fresh air.  I would encourage you to check out the website www.beyondchocolate.co.uk

Yes its a UK website but anyone can get information from there and I understand that the members include those outside of the UK.

hmmm when i was younger and even after i gave birth to my daughter i use to slim... very slim you may say... i was only 100 lbs... my waisline was a 25 or 26 inches... and i am 5'3" in height...

now that i am 3o, i am 110 lbs... and my waistline is 29 inches... i use to be bothered by it but then i realized i look better... i dont look to frail, i look healthy, my skin is smoother and much more glowing...

i am a pear shape so no matter what i do to slim down my bottom half will not be of proportion to my upper half... but you know what... it doesnt matter much to me anymore... because whats important is that i maintain a healthy diet and a positive outlook in life... when gain weight i tell to my self... hey i am 30 and i have a daughter so what if i gain a few pounds!!

i am still in the normal weight range anyway!....LOL...

u-i, think about all the things you know that kid doesn't. like kegel exercises. :>

seriously, though: figure out what your plan would be to lose weight, with walking and exercise, portion control, no snacking, etc. do you have the time to make those changes not just for a while but on an ongoing basis? what would you have to give up for that to happen?

i think that understanding the costs are important in getting some perspective on this.

sweetlady - I'll have a look at the site.  I do love parts of my body, but others parts ....ugh.

sweet cookie - I don't think I want to be as thin as I was before kids, but I'd like to be at a more reasonable weight for beauty and for health.  My target weight is only about 15 pounds away now.

SW - I started on a more structured diet system which I intend to make a lifestyle about 2 months ago.  I'm making progress, but at times just get frustrated at how slowly it's going.

Unique.....there are so many websites focused on healthy lifestyle and weight loss. Just browse around and pick the one you like ...then think what do you like to do as exercise; walking, jogging, swimming? Dont do anything you dont like ...your body will rebel with injuries that will slow you down.

Once you have an idea of your comfortable area go for it but starting slowly and sistematically. Its better doing 10 minutes a day but constantly that two hours of gym once a week...There are tons of tapes for working out at home...

The diet is trickier....dont buy anything that is bad for your body. Just dont have it at home.

And its never too late to start....but its true that age can be an obstacle because our body reacts differently and fat is deposited differently......still I am in better shape now that when i was a teen ager. I still wears my wedding gown even though during my pregnancy i ballooned .....

Also, 15 pounds are not too much weight...only remember.....the fatter you are the esier is losing weight....the closer you are to your ideal weight the slower and difficult is shedding pounds...i dont care when i see these heavy people of 300 pounds shedding 20 of them in one week..

that is easy,  the last 5-10 pounds are the most stubborn to go...good luck...;-)

Tell you those things they use are very imperfect. They have to put your weight and age in it and the older you are the odds are more against you.A person same height and weight but youger gets better fat resents in those things. Now I don't kow your age but I know those machines are not always telling the truth.

Ginger - I'm adding in more exersize in sneaky places such as parking further from my building at work, taking the stairs whenever possible and such.

Skald - That machine makes me think bad words!

u-i: i know you know this but i think you could use a reminder: change is hard. this isn't a short-term fix but a long-term solution, and the most lasting changes are always like this. you'll get there: just be patient with yourself.

SW - youre right, I do know, and I probably should just relax a little more and be patient. (which is such a foreign concept)

The longer you just sit around and do nothing about it, the worse your going to feel. Get your but out there and act like a kid again. do things that you don't think you can do, drop the weight. Why do you just want to "feel" like you did back then when you can "be" what you "were" back then. get out and do somethiong about it... NOW!!! GO!! another words quit reading this, stand up step away from your computer and go for a walk. it's a start. Eat lots of turkey sandwiches, drink alot of water, you will see the weight come off faster than ever with out drugs! thats what I did. oh, yeah, screw subway too! yeah, they are good but who can afford to eat there 3 times a day, everytime I go there I spend 8 or 9 bucks. turkey sandwich( watch what you put on that sandwich too) and drink alot of water.

I am a big woman. Sometimes I feel good about my body. Sometimes I am not so satisfied with it. To be honest, I prefer big body. Big and curvy body is sexier than the skinny one. So most of my friends are big ones at largeplace.com. I like to chat with them.
  • uniquely-ironic said on Dec 27, 2007....
cutebig - I'm not opposed to having extra padding, but I'm afraid that I am unhappy with the amount of padding I'm sporting now.  I'm always going to have curves.  I have a large chest.  I'd just like the composition to be more muscle than fat.
