How was childhood different years ago?

I was reading gingersoul's post about things that she will miss when she leaves Italy (home).  Got me to thinking...

What do you remember fondly from your childhood that is no longer available today, or has vastly changed in our more modern world today? 

For me, it is kids being outside all day playing with friends.  I never remember being afraid of being taken, no one ever really had to coach me about what to do if attacked, etc...  I ran all over the neighborhood or campground with wildly free abandon and never, ever, not-once do I remember a scary incident.  Hmmm....

    Yes, we used to run around without fear of being snatched.  I also remember having a lot of extended family close by.  We knew our cousins like our siblings.

    honestly, the thing i miss more than playing outdoors is the ice cream truck.

    Oh, Ed...
    The ice cream truck!!  I STILL feel the urge to run when I hear the music of the ice cream truck!  We do have an ice cream truck that visits our neighborhood, usually Sunday evenings.  My kids know that I will never, ever say "no" to ice cream from the ice cream truck.  Oh, yea... the memories.
