Back to "Jesus Camp"... I didn't plan on writing so much about it, but I just discovered the scariest thing about evangelical fundamentalists.
In the documentary, I was surprised to see a mother make her kids hold and isreali flag. I could not see the link between evangelists and Isreal. I made researches and... Wow... This is just plain scary.
Here, in France, conventional wisdom (always question conventional wisdom...) makes people think that if the USA are supporting Israel, that's because they have an important jewish population. I have no problem with the existence of the state of Israel. I have jewish ancestors, and if I don't support Israel's policy on Palestine, I do not deny the right for this country to exist.
What I just found out is why the USA really do support Israel and why they don't support the peace process with Palestine. According to fundamentalist christians who, as I said earlier, are taking over politics, the reinstatement of Israel as a country is announcing the Apocalypse, the end of time and Jesus' coming back. As far as I am concerned, they can believe what they want. But the fact that a belief should influence the world's peace and the well being of individuals who don't even share that belief is not to be tolerated. Who do they think they are to jeopadize peace just to make sure that they can take what they believe in litteraly? How arrogant is that?
If I learned something about fundamentalists (of any religion), it's that they can't just mind their own business. They seem to have a pathological urge to mess with other people's lives. Why can't those people just keep their beliefs to themselves and leave everyone else alone? When it's about door-to-door proselytism, it's annoying but at least, it's not really harmful. But this is more serious. Last time a nation decided to rule the world according to hateful beliefs, everyone knows what happened...
