My 2 best friends and I head out once a year to reconnect, chill, eat, shop, hang out, be best friends.  Two of us fly from here, one from the other side of the country.  We choose our destinations based on whatever tickets are cheapest, which is a fun way to pick where to go!  We have ended up in several neat cities that way, some that we probably would never have chosen any other way.

Who else does "Girls' Weekends" or similar?  Do the guys do anything like ski weekends, or something like that?  How do you choose your destinations?  Same every year, or different each time?  Do you stay close to home, or far enough away (like we do) that there are not "call backs" to ruin the weekend?  (OK, I would fly home for an emergency, but my husband can handle most things and my being far enough away that it isn't a two hour drive encourages him to "handle it".  Just my thoughts...........)

Well, SC... let 'er rip!  Can't wait to hear about your weekends away (or longer?).

Taz - My girlfriends and I used to do this.  We went to the beach every year but then everyone started having babies and no one wanted to haul a bunch of youngins to the beach.  That is not fun on a girl's trip.  We have gone out of town recently and house-sitted for a lady we knew that lived at a lake and had a pool.  We took all the kids and had a blast.  Now we settle for going out to eat about once a month.  Some of the girls are about an hour from here so we meet in a small town about halfway.  We go to the same restaurant - it's a restored soda shop with lots of history.  We go so much the owners know us.  I won't call it relaxing though because of all the kids.  Eating with 6 children is never relaxing!

    Fearing,
That is just the thing... we do a "no kids, no husbands" weekend, which really provides a get-away.  Love the kids a ton, but need a break occasionally... know what I mean?  Makes me a better wife/mom, I think.  My husband does a ski weekend with the guys every year or so, and it is good for him, too.  Do you have anyone who can watch your kids... are your kids old enough for you to get-away?

Taz - my sister-in-law and I were just talking about this.  Last week that group of friends met at a restaurant - kids in tow.  It was awful!!!  Like some sort of punishment for crimes committed.  We are going to take a stand and say 'we love you guys.  we love your kids and we love our kids. we enjoy spending time with you but we ain't bringing youngins anymore!!!!'  Why call it "girl's night out" if we have to haul a passel of kids with us when we go?  We can't carry on any type of conversation.  We can't enjoy the food because by the time we cut up food, get ketchup, more drinks, get up the spilled drink, refill drinks, more ketchup, sit on the edge of my seat, run to the bathroom, miss half the conversation, answer no less than 40 "Hey Mooommmm", talk around subjects you don't want repeated BY the children, shell out $20 for a meal you didn't get to enjoy in the first place and go home more tired than you began, put the kids to bed late which means they'll be cranky the next day...........I could scream!!!!  Multiply that by 4 or 5 kids at any given meal - all ages somewhere between 2 months and 8 years old.  I'd rather stay at home and call them on the phone.

Sounds to me like you and your friends are "ripe" for a weekend at the beach again.  It is a pain to put together all the childcare, notes for sitters, etc... but sooooo worth it!  My buddies (there are 3 of us in all, and only 2 have kids) have done Boston, NYC, San Antonio and New Orleans.  The rule, that makes it ever more interesting, is that we never can pick the destination prior to planning.  What that means is: we just go on the internet, find where the cheapest flights are going and we just buy 'em and go there!!  We have had lots of fun and discovered new places that way.  Ya gotta try it!!

Glad that you are "putting your foot down" re: the kids.  We are need to chill with our friends.  My friends are like the sisters I never had.  I just have to hang with them on occasion.
    Cheers,
    Taz
