Today I reached one of those "milestone" days as a mother -- that may seem trivial to others....but I'm smiling at the outcome!   My son, who it 10, is into very competitive sports -- football, soccer, basketball, and most especially baseball.  He is very athletic and usually dubbed as "one of the best on the team" by other teammates and parents and is always chosen to be on different "All Star" teams.  Of course, I am his number one fan!!

Well, my daughter, age 8, is the "girly girl."  She is not an athlete by nature -- we have encouraged her to play soccer and was bored.  She will not play softball or basketball...just has no interest.   While she is on a competive dance team, and is succcessful at it -- quite frankly, I am a MUCH better "ballpark mom" than I am a "dance recital" mom.  All those little girls......ahhhhhhhhh!!  the drama....But we do it for her anyway -- and am so proud of her accomplisments.

My hubby and I are both golfers and have had both kiddos out on the course with us since they were toddling.  Of course, my son is naturally pretty solid at age 10 and loves to golf with us.  My baby girl....however.....just likes to "drive the cart."  We have always wished we had picked up the game as children so that we would be better today.  And would love for the kids to learn a sport they can play well up into adulthood.  A bigger perk:  its something we can all do as a family.

Today was the first day of "Junior Golf" at our local Country Club.  $5.00 for a morning of golf, lunch and an afternoon of swimming -- not bad for a day's entertainment.  My son was automatically on board (as this was his 4th year to participate).  Little girl, however, was much more of a challenge.  We have been "encouraging" her to just give it a try -- knowing that if she would just go once -- she would love it and choose to go back.  Nothing doing.

Being her mom, I suggested asking a friend to come along........she began warming up to the idea -- but basically didn't want to discuss it at length.  Balked when I made the call to register her.  Finally -- a light bulb went on.....I took her shopping!  Purchased a darling pink collared shirt -- cargo shorts and a pink Titleist cap.  Bought her a pink golf glove, headcovers for her clubs and of course colored golf balls....you guessed it.....pink!!

Needless to say, she was ALL about golf this morning.  She may never pick up the game, but she certainly LOOKED the part!   haha  I dropped her and her friend off early this morning anxious of how this morning would go.  After her morning round, she gave me a call to tell me what a fabulous time she had -- and not only could she "Come back next week?" but "Could Dad take her to the driving range tonight???"

It started out -- "All about the Fashion" -- but whatever works, right??

Ed:  I just love the innocence of children!  :)

I started playing golf in July of 2000 and hit a "hole in one" (that's a whole OTHER story) in September of that year!   After that I was hooked!   :)  As for improvement, I can drive the ball well, and my short game has seen its good days -- but I am horrible at judging my game in the fairways.  And of course -- I wish I could improve my "consistency" -- some days, I leave with a decent round......others I wonder if I had ever even picked up a club before!!

    Thanks for the comments!  :)

damn...you eagled in your first few months?! that's crazy--my dad's been golfing since the 80s and he's never yet eagled--and this is a guy who golfs three times/week or so!

i understand reading the fairways can be tricky. do you play primarily at your club, or do you also visit other courses?

Yes....an ace is a rare thing......glad I had witnesses!  ha!

I live in a "golf course community" so I primarily play that one since its so close to home. However,  we are about 20 miles from a golf resort area that has 9 courses -- so we play those on occassion, too.

I don't get to play as much as I like until baseball season is over.....you know....the whole "Sportsmom" thing!

    very clever!
    i'm with you, whatever works!

i have a girly girl who plays tennis.
she tried softball and basketball and neither fit her.  tennis is a much better one.

i'm all for a sport you can do as an adult.

    Hey, whatever works!

My six-year-old is interesting.  She's in gymnastics because she wants to be good at Pee-Wee cheerleading when she's in third grade.  She plays soccer as well--in fact, my ex commented on what a prissy miss she was during one of her games.  Thing is, she wants to do everything, and with four kids, we just don't have time to do everything.  She threw a fit because I wouldn't let her play flag football at the YMCA last fall!

My husband's a pretty avid golfer.  I try, but--well, we'll leave it at that.  We'd like to get the kids into golf, but my ex (the father of the two oldest girls) wouldn't approve.

My oldest daughter doesn't seem to be interested in any sports.  She's built like a distance runner, though.

Its funny how two children are completely different!   I have one that eat, sleeps and breathes sports.....and the other....well -- she just likes to look pretty!   lol
