My son has this fascination with climbing trees lately.
This has led to a number of little 'accidents'....scrapes on the back of his legs, a few bruises from failed jumps, a tick a few days ago in his head-

But last night took the cake.

He was stripping in the kitchen to get into the shower after his tree excursion, and was down to his boxers when i heard him yell, OUCH!
Followed closely by, there's something in my underwear!

My husband jumped up from the couch and ran into the kitchen just as my son was throwing off those boxers.

Out of them fell THIS!

*shivers*

A big fat June Bug!!!
And it pinched him!

As my son stood naked in muted horror, my husband stepped on the beetle.
crrrrrrrrrrrunch

*blah*

I turned and walked out of the kitchen, but as i left, i could hear my husband say to my son,
better watch out with that tree climbing stuff.  next time it could bite that little pecker!

He was laughing.
My son didn't think it was so funny!

    Now, that was funny.

I might had a little bit more fun, like, we have to take you to the hospital, the thing can have rabies. Or something like that..

But what your husband said...Wow, I am still laughing....Funny stuff.

secret- Hope you don't mind my getting a good laugh about your son being pinched by a bug, all the way to his reaction to having his pecker bitten.

    Fond memories are just...fond memories.

Tree climbing is great fun for all children. The girls I knew as a youngster loved to climb trees, and evidently just brushed off the bugs like we did.

Geez, I still like to climb trees, bugs and all.
  • evil_twin said on Jun 13, 2007....
I'm not particularly squeamish about bugs, but if THAT was in my underwear, I'd freak out. Um, so, what did it bite exactly? Is he okay? Jeez...that hurts me just thinking about it!

    {shivers}  Ewwwwwwwwww!
The bug picture was bad enough but you had to add the "crunch" sound to it??
    LOL!

Secret...if  THAT THING  would have landed on my daughter you would have hear her screaming from Texas to New Jersey........lol...

She hates Junebugs....or any other insects.....so she climbs trees but in denial mode....lol....

i dont mind them...as long as they jump off me quickly....

    Your hubby is hilarious.....

  • mirrorimage said on Jun 13, 2007....
Oh my!!! I can't even imagine having that thing fall out of my underwear!! LOL
  • secretlife said on Jun 13, 2007....
alison, does your cat eat them?
my puppy has a thing for ants!

queenie:  oh i'm sure he'd LOVE that!

ui- i must admit, my knees were wobbly!

    MM:  LOL....ugly suckers, aren't they?

amy:  yeah, they are kinda the same color and shape...we have lots of them here and they are real pests in may/june!

zombie:  if you could have seen the look on my son's face you'd have been rolling on the floor...

beyond:  oh no, i wanted you to laugh!
it's was so funny to watch him...he knew something was in those boxers but was almost afraid to find out what!

i love to climb trees as a girl.  we had these two huge hazelnut trees in the yard with all kinds of big strong limbs....
i was never fond of bugs though, and in all my years i never got one in my underpants!!!

the fact that he was wearing those elastic waisted satiny shorts tells me this june bug must have crawled right up the leg...all the way up!
    *shivers*
i can't bear to think about it!

evil_twin:  they don't really bite-  their front legs have prickly things on them and when they brush against the skin, it feels like a pinch.
the 'pinch' was not near any important equipment.  but the fact that it was very close to some sure made my son think for a minute!

fearing:  i couldn't stop my husband....his automatic reaction was to step on it.  they're big and make a big crunch!  so gross!!!!!!
at least i have pergo floors in the kitchen!
    easy clean up!

my husband is quite the joker.  and he did get a great laugh in!

Reminds me of a scene in a movie, one of those lazy summer days, boys will be boys type of stories.  I can't remember the title.  A group of boys decide to take a dip in the creek and when they are ready to get out one of them pulls on his  waistband  and looks in his shorts and passes out.  Seems the creek was infested with rather large leeches.

So damn funny I almost died laughing.

Now I've been bitten by crawdads and turtles when swimming but only on my toes.

My four-year-old has been catching June Bugs and feeding them to our outdoor cat.  It squicks me out, but she and the cat seem to be enjoying it.
  • destinydiva said on Jun 14, 2007....
eeeewww Im cringing at the thought.......  your poor son....has he recovered from the trauma of the incident yet?? That could be aversion therapy to fear him from climbing trees...FOREVER!!!!     (hope not...tree climbing is fun :-)
Hope he ok, glad the attacker is now squaaaaashed to pieces!!  warning to all june bugs....stay outta underpants!!!!!!!!

freelance: my husband is a regular joker....i think he might still be chuckling over this one...

ali:  ewwwww....why do dogs have to eat bugs?  i never thought about that before!!!

rww: leeches?  oh YUCK!!!  i'd pass out too!
my son didn't quite pass out, but he did look a little woozy!

infernal:  why do they have to be so damn big?  they're scary cause they're so damn big!

i sit out on my deck some nights to read, and i can actually hear them bouncing off of the siding on my house!

if i'm brave enough to look over where i heard the impact....sometimes i will see one of the giant ones upside down unable to right himself.
    yuck yuck yuck!

boyz:  my son isn't normally afraid of bugs....but i will admit he didn't like this one crawling around in his underwear!!!

tbs:see how cruel we parents are?  we laugh at the antics of our kids....even their misery, and we'll tell this story to everyone and completely humiliate him!LOL

Eilan:  your cat eats them?  or just plays with them?

destiny:  he was outside again yesteday...but wait, come to think of it, he was in the backyard instead of the front yard!!!!

sweet:  they don't actually bite, and really don't even have anything to pinch with.  their legs are jagged and so when they rub against skin, it can feel like a pinch.

I am having more trouble, all the time, squashing bugs. Am I becoming a
Hindu? I keep thinking it might be someone like silverwhisper, or one of the
other atheists around here, come back to serve his time for his disbelief. I
guess that is just the price you pay. Next time just throw it back outside.
I have started doing that, putting them out, if they are not destructive like
termites. Even they are just doing what they were born to do. June bugs
are funny little creatures. It is like they are intoxicated by the light. They
keep buzzing around it and banging into the wall.

secret- You mentioned pergo flooring & I have a question. We have considered pergo for the kitchen but have been told that first, you can't leave standing water on it (this could happen & go unnoticed). And second, that it can stain. Can you tell me if you have had incidents where this isn't true?
  • lioneljay said on Jun 14, 2007....

Hey SL; funny story, June Bugs in your drawers. They aren't pecker
    biters, pecker pinchers maybe haha.

I was sitting watching my wife by the campfire, I saw a large spider
crawl into her neck hole near the back or side of her neck. I jumped up
and began patting her all over the top area of her sweatshirt.

    She asked what I was doing and being I country girl I told her. She said;
Well don't stop now, squash the damn thing haha.
    Great story thanks SL
  • sweetlady said on Jun 17, 2007....
Yikes that really is horrible.  I have not heard of June bugs.  From what you describe it sounds like a kind of beetle.  We get woodlice crawling around on the floor in the kitchen and sometimes the bathroom.  The woodlice look a bit like a small version of a beetle but they are brown.  I would hate to have something like that crawling anywhere on me let alone in a private area!!
  • secretlife said on Jun 17, 2007....
froggie;  lol!  i'm glad you don't remember those either.

alien:  you crack me up.  my sister is the one who catches bugs and lets them outside again...me?  i squash them!

lj;  bugs ...cheerleaders........bugs....cheerleaders..hmmmmm...you're right....i should be glad it's the bugs!

eilan;  i didn't think it was just dogs that ate them!

mobil;  i'd have jumped up and been tearing off the sweatshirt!

sweet;  yes, it's a big beetle.  i can't think of a worse spot to find one either!
