What was my Coporal screamming at me?. Wake up, you have just been selected to be an Air Defence Controller in the Air Force. That would mean that I won't get my 3 stripes and been a Seargent. No better in 9 months of training you will become an Officer, actually a 2nd Lieutenant. Why not, I wouldn't mind giving up all this running up and down hills for an air condition office. I am off to join the Blues.
It was sometime in Jul 1980, when I first step into a Air Defence Control Unit. Great, I heard that the girls in the Air Force are prettier. Now what is my job anyway? What have I got into this time. AT least I am not alone, there were another 20 guys and gals who are in the same boat or should I say same aircraft as me.
You mean all we have to do is control aircraft to intercept each other. So simple. Ok Let me have a go at it. But it was not that simple as I thought it would be. In the 1st week of training, I had to say goodbyes to 6 of my buddies, who couldn't tell their left from the right when controlling aircraft. Not to bad I managed to survive the 1st week of training. But as soon as more and more of my buddies fell away, I think I should get worried now. There were only 8 of us left. After 9 months of intensive training I graduated as an Air Force Officer.
Now where is that Coporal of mine, who made do all that extra drill and the weekend confinments, that I can still remember. What you mean he has left the Army. Looks like I will not be able to take my revenge. Never mind, I am now a 2nd Lieutenant. And this is the life. The beginning of a new life. Life is Great.
